- Lily Malone: [angrily after finding out about the letters] . All this time she knew. You knew. All this time you let go on loving that child! You let us fight over her, and cry over her. And you never said a word! Why? Answer me. Why?
- Larkin Malone: I don't know.
- John Malone: Lily...
- Lily Malone: All you had to do was talk to us!
- Larkin Malone: Talk to you? Nobody talks about ANYTHING in this house! Not the baby, or why we never even named him. Dad's drinking, or how he sleeps downstairs... or Grandma falling, and dad moving to Boston without us! Talk to you... HOW?
- John Malone: [reading Julia's letter] "This is Sophie. She is almost a year old and she is good. I cannot take care of her now, but I know she will be safe with you. You are a good family. I will lose her forever if you don't do this. I will send money for her when I can. I will come back for her one day. I love her."
- [Finishes reading]
- John Malone: She spelled "forever" wrong.
- Lalo Baldetti: Your mom cried.
- Larkin Malone: She always cries at the end of summer. The end of anything. Movies, weddings...
- Lalo Baldetti: Parardes.
- Larkin Malone: The fourth of July
- [They laugh]
- Larkin Malone: It's so sad.
- Lalo Baldetti: So...
- Larkin Malone: [imitating Ms. Minifred] "Do not begin your sentences with 'so' Lalo Baldetti. Get to it."
- Lalo Baldetti: Ha, Ms. Minifred.
- Larkin Malone: I ran into her today.
- [imitating again]
- Larkin Malone: "Poetry; wondrous words!"
- [They laugh]
- Lalo Baldetti: So, this year your mom will make you another plaid dress.
- Larkin Malone: Which I will not wear, and this year your mom will get you a new lunch box.
- Lalo Baldetti: Which I will not use. It'll be another year like every year.
- Larkin Malone: [pause] Not this year Lalo... not this year.
- Ozzie: He did too!
- Portia Pinter: He did not!
- Ozzie: Did too, I saw him!
- Portia Pinter: No way! Rebel Clark's in love with "Wild Eunice". That's why he wears that tattoo. He would never cheat on her.
- Ozzie: I've seen lots of girls on the back of his Harley.
- Portia Pinter: He's only been on the island six months. How many girls could you have seen?
- Ozzie: Well... lots!
- Portia Pinter: I don't believe you.
- Lalo Baldetti: Sally Wright says he's a devil worshiper.
- Portia Pinter: He is not!
- Lalo Baldetti: Is too!
- Larkin Malone: I think he's a poet.
- [They all stop and look at her]
- Larkin Malone: I was in the basement and I saw he's got tons of books. All poetry, and postcards from Eunice.
- Lalo Baldetti: Well, maybe he's a devil-worshiping poet.
- Portia Pinter: Is not!
- Lalo Baldetti: Is too!
- John Malone: Lily, you're overreacting.
- Lily Malone: That's what you said last time. I'm not going to make the same mistake twice.
- John Malone: Oh, is that what this is about? Is that what this is about, you blame me for what happened? There was nothing we could do!
- Lily Malone: Oh yeah? What was it then? Fate, kismet? Isn't that your answer for everything?
- John Malone: You wanna blame something? Blame the weather. Blame the circumstances. Blame God for Christ's sake!
- Lily Malone: No. Our baby died because you wanted to live on this God-forsaken island where there isn't a decent hospital around here!
- John Malone: That's not true Lily, we both wanted this.
- Lily Malone: They never should have let him come home. I tried telling them something was wrong. They wouldn't listen, neither did you.
- John Malone: No hospital in the world could've saved him. Jesus Christ couldn't save him!
- Lily Malone: That's right John, don't you take any responsibility. Oh no, don't you start!
- John Malone: He had a bad heart. It was a genetic condition, so if your looking for someone to blame, look in the mirror!
- Lily Malone: [Slaps him. Then starts crying] I'm sorry... I'm sorry.
- Ms. Minifred: [to her class] This year, we will be talking about the power of language. The power of words. Wondrous words. In these books is the power of a hundred hurricanes. You don't believe me? The Bible. The Declaration of Independence. Hamlet. Words can change the world, and they can change you.
- Ms. Minifred: [Larkin and Ms. Minifred bump into each other] . Oh, easy does it Larkin.
- Larkin Malone: Ms. Minifred I'm sorry.
- Ms. Minifred: I don't think anyone on this island has ever been in a hurry.
- Larkin Malone: It's the Labor Day Ferry. We're gonna miss it.
- Ms. Minifred: Ah. "I have come too late into a world too old."
- Larkin Malone: [pause] Sorry?
- Ms. Minifred: [laughs] I'll see you in class, and this year, we'll be studying poetry.
- John Malone: [Sees Ms. Minifred and Rebel Clark walking together from a distance] . Hello Eunice!
- [Eunice and Rebel wave]
- Larkin Malone: Eunice? Ms. Minifred's name is "Eunice?"
- Lalo Baldetti: WILD EUNICE!
- [Larkin and Lalo laugh]
- John Malone: She walks with beauty Eunice Minifred does.
- [Larkin laughs hysterically]
- Larkin Malone: [Sees John and Lily walking hand in hand] They look like they're walking into a painting.
- Ms. Minifred: [She flips through slides only to see they're empty] That's why I teach poetry, not physics.
