The 1929 Warner Brothers movie THE ISLE OF LOST SHIPS is said to survive at New York's Museum of Modern Arts, but doesn't seem to have been shown in donkey's years. No matter! In 1955, the Warner Brothers, celebrating the 50th anniversary of their first movie theater had Robert Youngson do one-reel precises of some of their early hits. This was one of them.
Youngson is better remembered for his championing and compilations of silent comedy, so it should come as no surprise that this unassuming short subject tackles the movie in a lively and amusing fashion. By the five-minute mark, narrator Dwight Weist is making comments on the startling coincidences that made the plot go. By the end, he is conceding that it's certainly an unassuming melodrama, but that's what people liked.
