A typical but heartwarming romance
Peter_Young28 August 2009
Jaanam Samjha Karo is a very nice watch for the entire family. Urmila Matondkar plays Chandni, a young girl who works as a nightclub dancer and singer to feed her family. She meets a handsome womaniser named Rahul, played by Salman Khan. Rahul's grandfather, played by the great Shammi Kapoor, comes to visit him and keeps insisting that he finally get married, and Rahul asks Chandni to pretend to be his wife. She does so, and his grandpa is charmed by the young girl who has great values. Rahul does not take Chandni seriously, but she falls in love with him. But then, when his grandpa leaves, she decides to do the same. Will something or someone change this? Go and watch to find out. The film has everything a Hindi commercial flick of its sort needs: very melodious songs, charming romance, good stars, nice story, solid dialogues, amazing locations and many emotions. Salman Khan and Urmila Matondkar have a very good chemistry together. Shame they didn't work as much together. Khan is very good as Rahul, but the film belongs to Urmila, who is wonderful in an all-out mainstream flick. She manages to make the sensitive Chandni a real woman of substance with her intense style and forceful dialogue delivery. Shammi Kapoor is very, very likable as Rahul's grandpa. The film is light and entertaining, it does get a bit overdone at times (though I still can name a few filmmakers who would have turned it into an unbearable soap), but is generally an interesting watch despite some of its flaws. I recommend.

One of Salman's good films

Warning: Spoilers
Salman gave many hits in 1999 and this was one of them. Jaanam Samjha Karo was the first and last time Urmila Matondkar and Salman Khan worked together and I must say, their pairing was good. It's definitely a shame filmmakers never had Urmila with Salman ever again in any film. Anyways, Janaam Samjha Karo is a typical romantic comedy with some action but it's well handled for the most part.

The story is the same old formula, where the guy is a Casanova but the girl changes the guy. This story has been used many times in the past but not every movie using this formula has succeeded. The film contains everything from funny one liners, typical romance, action, and good songs. The movie does drag nearing the end but the final fight and then the end is good. However, the very end is a bit stretched out making the drama boring. However, the direction and the script work well and do full justice to the film.

Direction is good, scenes are well handled and despite a few flaws like drags and stretches, the film flows well. The biggest flaw would have to be the scene right before the title song. Salman Khan comes to dance ans flirt with Urmila and the way they act looks like they know each other when this is their first meet. However, this is forgiven with the comedy that happens later. There are many light hearted scenes, there is no vulgarity despite Salman's character being a vulgar one.

Salman Khan steals the show with his one liners, his expressions are good. He doesn't look bored when acting, he puts full energy into his dancing, his action. Overall, Salman does a good job. Urmila Matondkar proves why she is such a great actress, she doesn't overact. Her expressions are well timed and she also gets good dialogs to mouth. Despite that one scene where the script makes her overact, she acts well. Late Jaspal Bhatti is funny, he evokes laughter the most in the film. Shammi Kapoor is good as the grandfather of Salman. Shakti Kapoor is good as the villain, he makes the act look real but his Casanova act is irritating. Sadashiv Amrapukar is good as well, his change nearing the end is too sudden but well shown. The rest provide decent support.

On the whole, Jaanam Samjha Karo is a light hearted movie despite some a few crude jokes. The film successfully evokes laughter and successfully forms a drama where two opposite characters fall in love. Unlike many films, this one is well handled and the flow of the film is good.

Predictable but Enjoyable
GypsiB8 April 2017
Chandni (Urmila Matondkar) has been forced to become a dancer to support her extended family. Despite this, she lives a virtuous life, dreaming of marriage. Womanizer Rahul (Salman Khan) sees her and is determined to seduce her, but she is not taken in by his lies.

This romantic drama showcases Matondkar's excellent dancing with some impressive musical numbers. Shammi Kapoor is great in his role as Grandfather. While this is a familiar role for Khan, he does it well enough that I intensely disliked him at times. The plot was good, predictable in it's happy ending, but still enjoyable. Overall, it's an entertaining film for Bollywood fans.
