A mess of a movie
lingmeister15 January 2003
Warning: Spoilers
Lover's Grief seems to be China's attempt at a hollywood style blockbuster. But it seem to failed miserably.

The film is about an American pilot Owen Neumann, played by Paul Kersey whose plane was damaged by the Japanese while on a spy photo mission, then landing behind Japanese occupied land in China. He is rescued by members of a Chinese communist army has to be sneaked out of that region. On the way, Owen falls in love with one of the solder Angel, played by Jing Ning.

The portrayal of westerners seems so ludicrous that it is as if westerners were irrational fools. The acting by the western actors seems so bad that it seems that the director don't know how to direct them. The aerial scene were particularly embarrassing, with the acting nothing more than reading of the lines on top of the already inconceivable scenario. The voice-over by Owen is a literal reading off the script, not even pausing between sentences to given the sense of insight and retrospect.

We also have a few American invincible hero scenes where the good guy/guys is wildly overmatched by the bad guys but somehow guns most of them down. Many of the scenes seem to be heavy on the sentimental, especially the repeated replay of the scene where Angel is posing for a picture. They are trying to have a hollywood feel but not knowing how, missing on much of the fine details.

This movie also takes a liberal interpretation of history, with the war within a war reference so oddly thrown in that I had to rewind to see if they were fighting the Nationalist or Japanese soldiers in the prior scene.

I do wish the flashbacks were not so blatantly used, some of it seems a little forced, not being flashbacks of anybody at all, but more like tools to show us what happened there. There must be some other way to convey what happened without having to use this method. Angel's flashback is used in a better way that it meshes better with the story.

The main thing going for it is the expansive view on the beautiful mountainous landscapes. The extreme zooming out from the soldiers to the whole mountain range also conveys the vastness of the region, and many of the foreshortened view of the Yellow river gives us a feeling of immediacy to its turbulent waters.

The development of the love story seems to be well paced, without it being rushed or forced. Although the fact Owen proclaiming his love for Angel and wanting to marry her seems to be superceded by the big dramatic moment afterward where he kisses her. Somehow that the importance is oddly reversed. Also, her death is oddly construed, since we don't see Owen not being able successfully swim across the river with Angel tied to him, or Angel being on the verge of death, although that is probably what the film is trying to portray, but then where is her sacrafice for him that is central to the plot?

The special effect is bordering on embarrassing, with miniatures so obvious and still figures blatantly visible. Really simple things like shooting in high frame rate and slowing down the playback by 3-4x in order to give a feeling of larger scale wasn't even used. Or shooting in small aperture on close-up shots of miniatures so they don't look like miniatures. Or placing the real and miniature version of the plane hanging over the cliff at similar position so we think they are the same thing, and maybe using dolls that does more than have its knee move from the pulling of a string. Consistency in the ship attack scenes are clearly lacking, with the ship moving one second and standing still the next, not to mention the visibilty of the rope below the waterline that is used to tow it.

Apparently, the Chinese officials thought so highly of this film, its story of reconciliation with the long time western nemesis indirectly told by the love story, along with the sacrifices by the brave Chinese people. But the American epic blockbuster feel they liked so much actually works against the film because it is so amateurish by western standard. Granted, there are big budget American films that are no better than this one, but none are hailed as worthy of an Oscar.

If you want to see the film, do so because you want to see Jing Ning, or because you want to see how everything could go wrong when you imitate a style. But not because you want to see a good film.

A great, heartfelt movie

I really don't get why this movie only got 5.3 and all you lousy comment posters have to really bash on this movie. This is actually the opposite, it's better than most of the crap Hollywood is throwing at us!

Acting: Decent actors, but Paul Kersey's death screams when his plane was about to crash really distracted me from the film. Jing Ling is much better looking than Ziyi Zhang in my opinion.

Directing: My dad is familiar with Chinese film and says that the director is well-known and renowned in China (aside from Yimou Zhao, of course).

Sound: So-so. It's not spectacular but not absolutely horrible at the same time. But, the music score is AWESOME (it melted my heart).

Picture Quality: Honestly, I thought that this film was made in the 70's (lol). Anyway, it added to the atmosphere in some way.

Overview: Great film for romance buffs and maybe will attract the war movie fanatics. The people who made this film really put effort in this film and it shows. It might not be a classic, but it really sinks into your heart. It digs deep into human emotions.

The Legend of the Yellow River
yl48112 May 2011
The film "The Legend of the Yellow River "tells a story about World War II in the Chinese slopes, the director Feng Xiaoning is a versatile person in the film industry, his works are all excellent. The film released in 1999, caused a sensation when released, because in China, there is no second film can be showed in place about the World War II.

The Yellow River is the second longest river in China, to Chinese people, it has unusual significance, and the film was called "The Legend of the Yellow River" I think it is not only the story took place beside the Yellow River, and it is want to cause a resonance with our Chinese people.

The film is based on the theme of war and love, the hero is a U.S. soldier, named Owen, his plane was hit by Japanese warships, he was falling to the slopes, met the actress Angel and the Eighth Route Army soldier Heizi, They were ordered to escort him to the base, they met a number of risks on the way, the Japanese chase and the robber's baulk, to face of brutal invaders, the Eighth Route Army, who showed that they do not yield and express the national integrity, Owen was shocked, and build a feeling of life and death with them, and finally, all the soldiers died.

The film use a flashback to play, the hero Owen's recall is the main line for the whole movie, when he stood beside the magnificent Yellow River, his mind suddenly rolling up. The movie scenes are very spectacular, the scenery is beautiful, that adds a touch of color for the entire movie, and the audience cannot help to enter the movie. I have to say, the film is in the well production place.

In the figure, the film depicts good not only on the positive character but also spent a lot of effort on the villains. Overall, this is a film that background of war, which have certainly not a small part of the war, the Japan invasion of China, the whole world playing the World War II, this is the big background, while the small background is the Eighth Route Army of the Communist Party is being escorted the American pilots to the base on the plateau slope. The stories interspersed in the whole movie are also impressive. When Owen dropped, he saw the kids' happy smile, and instantly come to nothing because of the Japanese planes came. The hostility between Angel's father and the leader of the Eighth Route Army. The village after the Japanese army go through, the field littered with corpses. The butler malicious informers and so on, these circumstances have contributed to the development of the whole movie, it will better portray the good characters, and bad characterization of the worse. The ending is tragic, all the war movies will not be have a good result, because all of the war is always been wrong and stupid, it may have not any good in addition to hurt human beings, . So the tragic ending of film maybe conveys a spirit of peace, an anti-war spirit of peace.

"The Legend of the Yellow River" is not an ordinary movie, its success is that it describes human's nature in the heart, the whole movie with "love " to through, so much as memory is the main line, but rather say that "love" the main line in deep. On watching the movie, I always have been impacted by human's nature, when see the scenes of the tragic scene, for example, a woman was burned till died with cry, the crushed baby, as well as the actress cut the rope at the last, my tears were keep running down, the most wonderful point in this film perhaps is here. "Love" in this way is not reflected the common love with the man and woman, but is the love to the motherland, to the Yellow River, and the sentimental attachment to the Chinese nation, it has a dual meaning.

The director Feng Xiaoning through the thinking of the war and human's nature in the film, put the hero into a situation of live and death, to highlights the burning flame in their hearts in the ruthless environment. The film is around the escorted with adventure, it is fully to express the conflict with personality and the communication between the soul, it played a great songs beside the yellow river with surging forward, sing the praises of the lofty quality when defeated the invader and love and care with the friends from other countries. It is a excellent film work mixed the thoughtful, artistic and ornamental.

An Unfortunate Mix Between Romance and Propaganda
mackinnonm-5577922 November 2019
The acting in this film is mediocre, the obvious dubbing-over of a large chunk of the audio is annoying, and the subtitles are full of mistakes, but I thoroughly disliked the blatant propaganda-driven storyline. The movie was full of demeaning footage of "Japanese" people, portraying them as comedic, un-empathetic killing-machines. There were gory scenes in the movie, where the Japanese soldiers were crushing babies, and fatally gassing mobs of people. In contrast to this, the Chinese soldiers are portrayed, usually, as great, good-mannered people, yet still able to mow down hundreds of Japanese soldiers single-handedly, and willing to sacrifice themselves for the better of their peers. The romance, just like some of the more "serious" scenes, was so bad, that it was, more often than not, laughable.

So bad, I could barely stop laughing.

So the American lead is an absolute idiot...
purple_plus_blue21 August 2021
I have fond memories of this movie as I watched it as a child.

Watching this again as an adult, makes me realize that the Chinese portrayed the American as an absolute idiot.

Anyways, if not for the unrealistically low IQ and absolute idiocy the American lead is portrayed to have, this movie would get a 10/10.

Very lousy attempt to mix romance and love with war
zzmale12 December 2003
To be honest, even the war-era love and romance of political propaganda was much better than the one in this film. The film crew does not appear to be able to distinguish sympathy from love and attempt to mix the two by first sympathy/curiosity, and then turned to admiration/love is totally unrealistic. Maybe it was not the original intention but the film definitely gives such lousy impression.
