I noticed something curious. Director Siddharth Anand of the film ‘Fighter’ says that his film flopped because 90% of Indian moviegoers have never sat in an airplane! I was amazed, amused, but, most of all, I was worried. Worried, because this is how the maker of a Rs 400-crore film thinks!
My mind instantly went back to Shakti Samanta’s ‘An Evening In Paris’ (1967), where a bikini-clad Sharmila Tagore is sea skiing as Shammi Kapoor courts her hanging from a helicopter. After learning what Malhotra had said to explain why his film had failed, I wondered how many people hang from a helicopter to court a woman! I don’t know anybody who has done such a thing and still, ‘An Evening In Paris’ was a major hit! I can cite hundreds of such examples.
Of course, the audience must first identify with the subject of a film. The other factor...

Starring Shahid Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut, Saif Ali Khan
Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj
In art, as in life, consistency is not a quality that is easily obtainable. In the life that is created in Vishal Bhardwaj’s art the characters are so flawed and fractured and so driven down to destruction by their own demoniacal desires that you fear they would collapse under the weight of their own ambitions and longings.
This is true as much of the characters as the director himself. Vishal Bhardwaj’s latest arguably his most ambitious film to date could have ended up being the Bombay Velvet/Mohenjo Daro of 2017. It is rescued, no redeemed, by an excruciatingly exquisite perception of the wounds and lashes that love pelts down on those who are its victims.
Rangoon is a simple tale, unnecessarily complicated by its characters’ prevarications. It is a story pinned down to a bobbing blueprint...

Usually, when a filmmaker plans a film, known actors are at the top of the list when it comes to casting for the lead roles, but upcoming film ‘What About Savarkar?’ will have newbie Shrikant Bhide playing the protagonist Abhimaan Marathe.
Talking about casting Bhide, presenter Rohit K Shetty said, “Though we have a few well-known actors like Sharad Ponkshe, Avinash Narkar and Atul Todankar in the film, we decided to cast Bhide in the lead role as he is an accomplished theatre artiste and we wanted a powerful actor and not just a known face. It is usually seen that big actors often work on multiple projects at a time and have their own whims and fancies while shooting for a film and we wanted to avoid all such issues. I must say that Bhide has done complete justice to his role and I am planning to cast him...

Films that gained a ‘cult following’ over the years, despite being unnoticed on release
Back in the 80s, all we had was Doordarshan. Anything you wanted to know about cinema, mythology, world literature, astronomy, science fiction, history; it was all there – right in your living room. So, in that glorious age of kitsch, I remember noticing this bubbly-looking but rather demure young woman in two films – one was Raghuveer Yadav-starrer Massey Sahib (1985) and this obscure film with an interesting name – In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones (1989). By the third time I caught her on TV, she had won a Booker Prize for fiction, for her book The God of Small Things. She was Arundhati Roy – the above-mentioned films were made by her then husband, Pradip Krishen. But we’re more interested in the second film – In Which Annie… was about a group of students in an Architecture College in Delhi,...
