This is a film about black communist history in former Yugoslavia killing a lot of Nazi helpers and also innocent people, just being on wrong side during the II.World war. This film is a dishonor for Croatian film.Characters are black and white and Partisans are like Gremlins horrible and blood thirsty and the all others are innocent.Awful film !

Pathetic
divali19 June 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is made in the time of patriotic trance in Croatia for gaining its independence. This can be seen in one-dimensional characters and story (partisans being bad guys, without a trace of humanity and culture, the others being poor, scared and innocent). It is worse than duality between Frodo and Sauron.

This movie is a pamphlet of distorted new-croatian ''patriotic'' view of our recent history. Historical facts about what really happened are available for understanding for everyone who has a little bit of brain, so I'm not going to explain what historical aspects of this movie are wrong (btw, almost every aspect). In the end, movie itself is too long, too slow, badly directed.

Please don't watch this movie, it is all wrong and it will hurt your senses and your intelligence.

ignoring the truth and justice
i_karl200118 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
End of WWII. Naci forces and their collaborators Ustasas, Domobrans and others are trying to escape from Partisan forces. Their plan is to negotiate surrender to the British troops in Austria and to avoid trial for war crimes. Eventuly they are returned to Yugoslavia facing the revenge for what they did.

This what really happened, but CETVERORED is ignoring those historical facts, specially the ones regarding the background of Ustasa movement and their horrible atrocities.

The end result is a travesty of justice and truth. Ustasa forces allies of Naci Germany during WWII brutally killed hundred of thousands Serb and Jews civilians and Croats anti fasists. What happened in Bleiburg is nothing comapare to crimes against humanity in Jasenovac and in many other of their death camps.

Imagine a film in which killers from Ausvic are innocent victims. Well this is even worse then that.

This is a forum about the film art, let us keep it that way please
zara120214 May 2008
Just as any other regime, this one got a chance to "set aright" all the wrongs done in the past and just as any other regime it uses film art as one of the means to achieve its goals. I can't comment on the quality of the film since I never saw it, but I strongly disagree with the tendency to use this forums to ventilate one's political believes. This is about the film art, so let it be what it is and let's not press our views and believes on the others. Only one more thing: reading the comments, I get the impression that this "historical truth" is brought to screen very one-sided (just as the others before, in the last regime and the one before and before ...)

Interesting, but biased
vojinvidanovic22 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Its always interesting to learn the other sides perspective. Independent state of Croatia was de facto Nazi puppet state, with awful war crimes in extermination camps. Even ordinary German army reported crimes as extreme.

Nevermind, as every puppet state it emulated a country, even being funded by Greater Reich. This is a story of its last days, when complete ISC army decided to retreat and to try to surrender to Western Allies.

Surely, amongst them were forcefully mobilized soldiers, that should be distinguished from Ustashe blackshirts (kind of like ordinary Wermacht and SS). Movie tries to show human side of ordinary men, compeling as similar war movies of war prisoners that suffered (Bridge on River Kwai, US Bantaan prisoners).

While it presents some of the facts (that UK/US Army refused to accept them as prisoners, that they had a long march and uncertain destiny, as well as that many were shot in Blaiburg without any trial) it omits several facts such as that World War II already ended, and that this force continued to fight. It was last Axis force in Europe. As well as that agreement among Allies was that Axis combatants are to be surrendered to theater they are combating).

In overall, I liked the first half of movie showing more human side of Croatian forces, then second one, trying to present communists as evil Gremlins, completely dehumanized and blood thirsty. Completely unrealistic, even yes, a lot of people were in anger due to crimes of Independent state of Croatia.

Sadly, high heads like Pavelic managed to escape. More balanced story of how people were involved in war without likeness would be better then trying to kind of justify Independent State of Croatia.

Croats have history and identity before that Axis puppet state, no need for such movies. Just another mirror or madness of ex-Yu fallout.

Truth and nothing but the truth
benedictus197129 April 2013
It's interesting how people who weren't't even there and haven't seen a piece of evidence can come here or anywhere and speak about this movie as a lie. First of all this movie is about true history that was hidden for half a century. After so many communist movies about "brave" partisans that are nothing more but a work of fiction, when somebody makes a movie about what really happened it is to be expected that some of all those people who watched "brave" partisans in movies like Sutjeska, Neretva, will come here and tell you that partisans were not like that. Well tell me than. If partisans weren't that bad, who killed 70000 people (many of them civilians) in Bleiburg? Maybe they went there by themselves and commit mass suicide?

This are fact that anybody can check this days:

70000 people were slain in Bleiburg. It was done by partisans. It was done by the direct orders of Tito.

I live conclusion to you.

Cringe
richkiel28 January 2022
It is laughable, and it lacks the reflexivity to even understand it. Instead, it plays it straight from beginning to end. A film that boggles the mind.

Important piece of work for a time hidden from the world by Communism.
usacroat1 April 2001
This movie shows some of the horrors experienced by Croatian Army regulars, Ustasa and most importantly, civilians post W.W.II. A time when Tito was handed free and total control of these people by the ruling coalitions of the U.K. , US. and its allies.

This film doesn't even begin to cover the atrocities committed by the Communists at the end of W.W.II. The tortures and outright murders of these people has been covered up and forgotten by history. All this thanks to the Communist regime of Yugoslavia from 1945-1990.

This film is both moving and revealing. It sheds light on a dark corner of history. A light that has been trying to shine for the past 50+ years.

I highly recommend this film to anyone who wishes to know the truth about the Croatian people.

Definitely the worst Croatian film
kajkutdado9 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The film I am making is for one reason only, and that is to try to revise history in order to portray criminals as martyrs. The film has neither beginning nor end, but represents pure political propaganda, something similar to what they are trying to do with Ravna Gora in Serbia.

The acting of all the main characters is forced, as if they were there to do it only to get a fee. But all this is not surprising when we see who made the film, since not a single film of the director in question has any artistic value, but was engaged by politics at the time.

If you wanted to do something about this topic, you should have presented the story much better, in a more intelligent way.

Excellent realistic film, a bit TV like though
vovita26 May 2004
An excellent and very realistic film, based on Aralica's book (based on survivors' experiences) and on a true event at the end of WW2.

Drammatic, but true. A piece of Croatian history, which was kept hidden for many years, and it is the proof of non-respect of international war conventions by the Allies. (some say that there is no/little evidence regarding this event, which is untrue, as I myself have done research for my undergraduate thesis on this matter - the documents are well hidden, and difficult to find...)

The main characters are a young couple, and what happens around them are true events. Some scenes are quite explicit, but as in each conflict those who are the "winners" are not always just and correct. The only lack of this film is that it seems more a TV film than a film made for the cinema. Otherwise, an excellent film which would need a bit more of publicity - as this event is still a delicate matter even after 50 years and it seems as an argument better not spoken about.

Piece of crap trying to rewrite history

Besides extorting the history, trying to portrait Nazi regime as good guys, it's a great example of a horrible movie, script, acting etc.

A true story
isthisreally_me2 September 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Whilst this is a low budget movie going by Hollywood titles, it has a great depth to it, in part due to the good acting & due to the story being based on fact.

It tells the true story about how the mainly Serbian, Partisans brutally tortured, raped then murdered innocent families (most of whom were Croatian) who were fleeing the fascist units. These innocents were fleeing persecution & were hoping to surrender to British forces in Austria. However due to an Allied agreement, these Croatian civilians were prevented from entering the British occupied areas.

Once the mainly Serbian Partisans caught up to & captured these civilians they were quick to deal out their usual punishment to those they despised - execution - it is generally agreed that these executions included rape and subsequent killing by stoning of women and beheading of men. The movie shows this fact quite glaringly & painfully. It shows the hatred in the Partisans & the fears of the murdered civilians. It is in your face, but there would be no other way to show such atrocities.

I believe this movie was completed after a large number of mass graves were found & it is generally believed that Serbian Partisans murdered up to 150,000 civilians without cause during this time. It is a sad testament to what some people can become.

I rate it highly due to the movie sticking largely to known facts about the event & the in your face attitude of the cameramen in attempting to truthfully show what was an extremely brutal event.

Croatian movie - WWII wartime drama dealing with Partisan war crimes
martin_vucic8 May 2009
Warning: Spoilers
The movie is a wartime drama set in Croatia during the last days of World War II. Entertaining and well worth watching if you are interested in the Croatian history of the Balkan region during WWII and what occurred during the last days of WWII.

The movies deals with historical events from the perspective of the losing side focusing on events which both Western and Yugoslav propaganda have long sought to sweep under the carpet or ignore. It primarily deals with the fate which befell hundreds of thousands of Croatian soldiers and civilians who were seeking to surrender to the allies in order to escape the mass murders, forced marches, and labour camps being perpetrated by Tito's communist partisans, who sought to liquidate any notion of an independent Croatian state or nation.

During the years of Yugoslavia the subject was taboo and covered up by the communist authorities in the name of a united Yugoslavia and for fear that their crimes would be exposed. With Croatia now a free, democratic state, a re-examination of history and the crimes committed by the partisans and Serbs under the banner of communist Yugoslavia is now possible.

Best Croatian movie ever
karakteran14 April 2017
Sedlar is the best Croatian director ever and this movie made him a national hero.

The Bleiburg genocide committed by Tito's partizans in May 1945 on hundreds of thousands POW's, women and children was described very bravely and without exaggeration.

Garbage and lies...
perro19 July 2017
History rewritten and revisioned by clerofascist and nazi collaborators, who desperately wants to blame "communists" and Tito's partisans for awful present state in Croatia caused by right-wing thieves. From the Croatian war 91.-95., there's many of so called "patriots", but they're nothing but money-hungry hate seeders.

Sad true story about Croatian Holocaust!
samarzijamario27 May 2018
After WW2 some 200.000 soldiers that were fighting against the allies + some 500.000 civilians wanted to surrender to the Americans but they were surrendered to the "British" in little Austrian town called Bleiburg because the British promised Americans they would not harm them and naive Americans let them to deal with it. The British sent them back to Yugoslavia in cattle vagons like Nazi's sent jews to concentration camps to Tito's Partisans which were their butchers, although they promised they were sending them to the west where is safe. The British ofcourse betrayed surrendered Croatians because they wanted to get even when Croatian general Ban Josip Jelacic in 1848 attatcked the evil Hungarian state that suppresed Croatian people, but which they were supporting as Masonary! This partisans were mostly consisted of ex serbian fashists called chetnicks that were fighting for Hitler and were spared their life after the war in order to exterminate everyone that were against the new bolshevic regime. In just 2 weeks they killed some 700.000 soldiers, but mostly they were men, women (raiped), children (raiped) old folks and burried them into 1750 secret locations in Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Hercegovina...and etc. Also, some years after the ww2 another 500.000 people were exterminated by Tito's Army which made him 10th biggest mass murderers in world's history killing total 1,2 million people!!! To this day now in 2018 this movie is still forbidden and they are still refusing to talk about that tragedy because the British, that same satanic Masonary instrumented 2 parties called HDZ and SDP in government and is still trying to remake "great serbia", but only in the means of economy, because they have failed to create it in the bloody 1991-1995 war for independence! It is also very important to mention that this movie has had the biggest audience or number of people watching it, around 70% of Croatian population (3.600.000), which made it still the the greatist of all time that were shown on Croatian national TV!

Communist children trying to find justification for crimes
mariosaric-197719 February 2020
I see a lot of people trying to justify mass murder by adding "context", previous crimes of victims etc. It does not work that way. Ustase had their revenge reasons for their crimes, hitler had them too. It was still a crime. When you look ww2 movies, you don't see anything about nazi reasons, passages from my kampf etc. You just see hideoues crimes, and that is what your serb and communist fathers did, hideous crimes. Everything else is just your BS justification. Every butcher has them. Sorry to see their children still have a "butcher" way of looking

Lame and miserable attempt
amuser-8468417 December 2020
The fact that you try to lie to others is understandable and expected, but when a man lies to himself then it is a dangerous psychosis and perversion. The film did not deserve a single star.
