Sex & Nudity

  • The movie centers around the harsh restrictions of widows in India. They're locked away in houses with out hardly any contact with the outside world. The sexual content in this movie is only implied and never seen. A young girl is married at 8 years old, but her husband dies, thus making her a widow. Sex is not even implied between them.
  • The ashram to which she is sent supports itself by prostituting the widows. At one point, Chuyia, the 8-year-old widow, is taken by a procurer to the home of a wealthy Brahmin to "play." Another widow becomes upset that this has happened, and attempts to rescue her. Chuyia is clearly traumatized by the experience.
  • The procurer is described as a "eunuch."
  • Overall, the on-screen sexual content in this movie is very mild.

Violence & Gore

  • A woman commits suicide by going inside the river.
  • No actual violence is portrayed in this film.

Profanity

  • Very little to none (the subtitles are far more toned-down than the actual Hindi dialogue).

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Some drinking. A character is shown drunk.
  • An old woman smokes opium with a pipe.
  • There is very little alcohol use, as well as some people smoking opium.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • After the girl becomes a widow her head is shaved and she is forced into living in poverty. While there is no violence these scenes are quite intense.
