In the mythology of the Celts of Scotland and Ireland, Selkies take their place alongside the legends of mermaids and mermen. According to folklore, wherever there are seals there will also be Selkies - creatures capable of shedding their seal skins and living as humans.
The reef and the jetty in the movie are Port Noarlunga's major assets as is the glorious beach and the surfing spots a few hundred metres south of the jetty. At the southern end of the surf beach is the Onkaparinga River which makes its way into the sea past high red cliffs.
