This is the second special by Rankin-Bass to narrated by the late Burl Ives. The first was Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
The story is strikingly similar to the popular children's story 'The Velveteen Rabbit,' in which a stuffed toy's owner falls ill and the toy is ultimately brought to life.
