Venerable actor Bette Midler says that her partially-autobiographical 2000 sitcom “Bette” represented a series of mistakes.
Among the errors, was her decision not to sue Lindsay Lohan, who appeared as her daughter in the pilot episode, but who did not continue in the following 16 episodes which broadcast on CBS in the U.S.
Midler unpacked her regrets on “Fail Better,” a podcast hosted by fellow star David Duchovny. “’Bette.’ A big, big mistake. I think for several reasons,” Midler said.
She suggested that Lohan’s early exit from “Bette” may have contributed to its failure. “Lindsay Lohan was cast as my daughter in the pilot. Well, after the pilot, Lindsay Lohan decided she didn’t want to do it. Or she had other fish to fry. So, Lindsay Lohan left the building. And I said, well, now what do you do?”
At the time, Lohan had recently enjoyed success in “Parent Trap.

Bette Midler is not holding back her thoughts on calling out her blunders from the past, and one of those is the 2000 sitcom Bette.
Midler recently recalled her stint as a sitcom star and called that experience a “mistake.” She also regretted not suing Lindsay Lohan after she dropped out of the show following the pilot.
“I did a television show, Bette. Does it get any more generic than that? A big, big, big mistake,” Midler said on David Duchovny’s Fail Better podcast. “I think for several reasons. It was the wrong motivation. It was a part of the media I simply did not understand. I watched it. I appreciated it. I enjoyed it, But I didn’t know what it meant to make it.”
She continued, “I had made theatrical live events. I had made films. I had made variety television shows. I had been on talk shows.

Bette Midler took a moment to reflect on her career missteps this week, opening up about how her 2000 sitcom, Bette, went awry.
“I did a television show, does it get any more generic than that?” Midler told David Duchovny on this week’s installment of his Fail Better with David Duchovny podcast from Lemonade Media. When Duchovny asked the singer to elaborate, Midler said: “It was for the wrong motivation, and it was a part of the media I simply did not understand.”
Bette aired its first and only season from 2000 to 2001 on CBS. It saw Midler playing herself in a semi-satirized version of her life. Midler said that she found herself in over her head when it came to producing a sitcom.

Two years ago to this very day, Seth Rudetsky, the Broadway composer, musician, podcaster, host of a show on SiriusXM radio, fundraiser, musical cruise host, conveyer of pop culture trivia and, now, “source music consultant,” received a text from Craig Mazin, the screenwriter, director and producer. Mazin was friends with Ted Griffin, who is married to Sutton Foster, who knows, as does seemingly everybody else in musical theater, Rudetsky.
“I get this text,” Sudetsky remembers, “in all capital letters, saying It’S Emmy And Golden Globe Award Winning Craig Mazin. Stop What You’Re Doing. I Need Your Help.”
Specifically, Mazin needed a song for a TV episode he was working on, a show tune along the lines of “I Miss The Music” from the 2006 Kander & Ebb musical Curtains, only older.

Exclusive: Emmy-winning Succession star Jeremy Strong is set to headline and executive produce a limited series about Boeing’s controversial 737 Max planes. The untitled project, which is now in early development at Amazon Studios, hails from Oscar-winning Argo screenwriter Chris Terrio and Plan B.
Written by Terrio, the fictional series, which is targeted for Prime Video, is described as an examination of the events surrounding the Boeing 737 Max. It will reflect various perspectives, focusing on a composite engineer character, to be played by Strong.
Terrio and Strong will executive produce with Plan B, Karim Amer and Jehane Noujaim.
In an unprecedented move, the Boeing 737 Max was grounded worldwide in 2019 following jet crashes in Indonesia (Lion Air Flight 610) and Ethiopia (Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302), killing all 346 people on board.
Following the fatal incidents, investigations found a flaw in an automated flight control system called the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (McAs). Boeing was...

Believe it or not (actually, it’s probably easy to believe), there was a time when pregnant women were deemed too risqué for broadcast television. That changed when Lucille Ball was memorably rushed to the hospital to give birth on “I Love Lucy,” the groundbreaking sitcom that co-starred her real-life husband Desi Arnaz and left an indelible mark on show business.
“Lucy and Desi,” a new documentary from director Amy Poehler, explores the unlikely rise to fame and enduring legacy of two comedy icons who broke barriers and subverted expectations about what it means to be an all-American couple. In advance of the movie’s premiere at Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 22, the former “Saturday Night Live” and “Parks and Recreation” star spoke to Variety about her deep dive into all things Ball and Arnaz, the impressive longevity of “I Love Lucy” — a show that debuted in 1951 and continues to...

In what proved to be yet another sluggish weekend at the domestic box office, the big news was that Christopher Nolan’s reigning theatrical champion, Tenet, was finally pushed from the top spot after five consecutive weeks at No. 1. The new title holder: 101 Studios’ The War with Grandpa, a long-delayed, kid-friendly comedy starring Robert De Niro as a feisty old coot who battles his young grandson over a coveted bedroom.
Originally intended to be released by The Weinstein Company, The War with Grandpa was trapped in an uncertain distribution purgatory ever since the studio’s top boss, Harvey Weinstein, became embroiled in a sexual-assault scandal that forced the company to close its doors. Now, two years later, the PG-rated comedy finally bowed in theaters under the banner of 101 Studios, a new distributor founded by former Weinstein Company exec David Glasser. After 22 years since her most recent acting nomination at the Primetime Emmys, Bette Midler returns for what is only her third shot at an acting win: Best Comedy Guest Actress as the sharp-tongued political chief of staff Hadassah Gold in “The Politician.” Should Midler prevail, it would be her fourth overall Emmy win, but her first for acting, all thanks to a scene-stealing turn in the season one finale episode “Vienna.”
While almost all of “The Politician” season one takes place during the high school years of Payton Hobart (Ben Platt), the finale episode “Vienna” jumps ahead three years to his life in New York as he begins a campaign to unseat long-time state senator Dede Standish (Judith Light). Plans by Bette Midler to write a tell-all book about working on her sitcom Bette have been cancelled. Last month it was reported Bette would receive $1 million from Simon And Schuster publishers, to write Cancelled, memoirs about her time on the now-defunct show. But Bette's representative Cindi Berger now says, "They called it off." The reason behind the decision is reportedly conglomerate politics. Simon and Schuster belong to Viacom, as does the television company CBS which produced the sitcom. A publisher says that Simon & Schuster felt that a negative portrayal of the network would be detrimental to the company.
