Watching the remake of a horror movie is a lot like watching a magic trick after you know how it’s done. You may have lost your sense of wonder at the trick itself, but if they’re doing it right, you’ve got an even deeper appreciation for the skill and showmanship of the magician.
The words “if they’re doing it right” are doing a lot of heavy lifting in that paragraph. Matt Sobel’s remake of Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz’s “Goodnight Mommy” tries to pull off the same mysteries and revelations from the original, but for some reason Sobel is doing it without the majority of the scares.
So much of the film’s brutality has been removed in favor of melodrama and CGI fake-outs that it doesn’t matter that the cast is bringing their A-game. The game has already been called due to lack of interest.

Ally Brooke has at least one regret from her Fifth Harmony days. Granted, we all have embarrassing moments from our past, but the "500 Veces" singer reflected on one particular performance that has her cringing nearly four years later. Ally, 27, could barely keep a straight face while looking back at Fifth Harmony's live performance of "Down" on TV Japan from May 2017. She posted the throwback clip on Instagram on Friday, April 16, and wrote, "Remembering that time I thought I was killing it with my dancing in Fifth Harmony… On Live TV." Serj Tankian mocks would-be martyrs and jihadists waging war in the name of religion on “Your Mom,” a track off his recent Elasticity EP. He plays up the song’s cartoonish side in a new lyric video.
In between animations of soldiers carrying guns and karate-kicking moms, Tankian rolls his eyes dramatically and raises his eyebrows as he sings about “radical greed” and “despicable fools.” At the end of the clip, he laughs at the idea that jihadists believe they’ll be given 72 virgins after they die.

If explosive fights and soapy drama are elements you miss from Challenge seasons of yore, then look no further than this week’s The Challenge: All Stars.
Thursday’s second episode shined the spotlight aaaaall over spicy vets Katie and Trishelle, and as old wounds resurfaced for the women, it didn’t take long for the F-bombs to fly and the nasty insults to be slung. Were the two legends able to make amends, and which female booked a return flight home? Let’s break it all down.

San Francisco, March 4 (Ians) Video collaboration and chat platform Zoom said it recovered from an outage where some users were unable to join meetings on its platform.
Down Detector, that monitors website for outages, showed a spike of problems impacting Zoom late on Wednesday.
According to the company's status page, all systems were now operational and the "glitch was likely due to a localized internet service issue".
Some Zoom users were facing server connection issues, while others said they were not able to join any conference.
"Serious issues today with Zoom for my class. Students could barely hear me. My internet was 227.2 Mbps download 11.3 Mbps upload but my audio was in and out. Tried speakerphone, laptop sound, wireless headphones. Nothing helped so concluded that it must have been zoom. Audio problems mostly during sharing ppt slides," a user said.
"Zoom isn't necessarily down, but they really need to fix the crash problems.

Last week, we shared Rick Livingstone’s memories of his time singing lead in the 1990 supergroup the Best alongside John Entwistle, Joe Walsh, Keith Emerson, and Jeff “Skunk” Baxter. Their set mixed songs by the Who, the Eagles, Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers, and Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, though the group dissolved after just four gigs in Japan and one in Hawaii. But thanks to a professionally filmed show at the Yokohama Arena and the magic of YouTube, they’ve had a long afterlife.

Stephen Colbert joined a chorus of people critiquing the 2021 Golden Globe nominations for shutting out Black filmmakers on Wednesday, making an obligatory “Shaft” joke in the process.
“The Late Show” host opened his monologue by congratulating those who did received nods from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for the 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards, which air Feb. 28, including Jon Batiste, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for Best Original Score for “Soul,” and praising the historic nomination of three female directors in one year.
“Unfortunately, there were also some glaring snubs, including a complete shutout in the Best Drama category for Black-led films, like Spike Lee’s ‘Da 5 Bloods’ and George C. Wolfe’s ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” Colbert said. “Once again, Black filmmakers get the shaft, which is doubly insulting since there’s already at least five ‘Shafts.'”

For as long as 2020 dragged its miseries across our lives, a curious refrain became constant in my line of work: ‘We never could have predicted something like this year while working on our project.’ That comment, and its many variations, was repeated en masse during interviews, press conferences, and Zoom chats about the handful of films, TV series, and other assorted media that managed to be released during a pandemic. But as HBO Max’s Locked Down signals, that’s about to change.
Up until this point, most of the films released last year were filmed in 2019 or earlier, creating among them a bizarre alternate reality where these stories existed on screen. There was no Covid in their 2020, nor shutdowns, and certainly not a global economy standing still. And barring a few low-budget (but appealingly ambitious) “Zoom” horror movies, that’s the way things went until Doug Liman announced he...

From The Bourne Identity to Mr. & Mrs. Smith to Edge of Tomorrow, Doug Liman’s scale has come a long way since his smaller-scale breakouts Swingers and Go. With Locked Down, the director’s filmmaking style is pared down once again, focused on a couple quarreling during the Covid-19 lockdown in London. Reminding us he’s more than just an action or franchise director, Liman’s latest finds him going back to his roots, drawing eyeballs with a stacked cast led by Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor, and supported by Stephen Merchant, Mindy Kaling, Ben Stiller, Dulé Hill, and Lucy Boynton.
Representing an early foray into the idea of pandemic-based studio filmmaking, Locked Down exists in the early days of the outbreak, those in which we were more hopeful than weary, discussing the possibility of it lasting until the summer of 2020. The script, by British screenwriter and Locke (and Serenity) director Steven Knight,...

The Duffer Brothers might not be ready to provide a release date for the upcoming fourth season of Stranger Things just yet, but the show’s creators have now revealed the next best thing.
While fans can absolutely expect the wildly popular sci-fi series’ central characters to return once again in order to fight the eldritch denizens of the Upside Down, Netflix is keen to spice up the action with a raft of newcomers. Or so it would seem.
Today, the streaming platform confirmed a plethora of new additions to the cast – some relatively unknown, others household names. Top of that list, as the headline has already given away, is horror film legend Robert Englund. Excluding New Line Cinema’s critically panned remake back in 2010 (in which Jackie Earle Haley took over the role), Englund is known primarily for immortalizing Freddy Krueger in Wes Craven’s original Nightmare On Elm Street and its subsequent sequels.

London, Nov 9 (Ians) Indian origin British singer Jay Sean says he was fascinated with hip-hop from an early age. He recalls being obsessed with the genre from when he was 10 or 11.

This is an attention-getter: Smokey and the Bandit is being remade for television by Halloween’s David Gordon Green and Brian Sides.
The pair are developing the adaptation of the 1977 Burt Reynolds movie with Ucp and Seth MacFarlane’s Fuzzy Door.
The movie, which was directed by stuntman Hal Needham, follows Reynolds’ Bo ‘Bandit’ Darville and Jerry Reed’s Cledus ‘Snowman’ Snow, two bootleggers attempting to illegally transport 400 cases of beer from Texarkana to Atlanta as they are being chased by Jackie Gleason’s county sheriff Buford T. Justice.
The series is described as an epic adventure of family, small-town crime, unlikely heroes, legend and legacy. Inspired by the genre of 70s and 80s drive-in double-features, the series explores the crossroads where humble realities meet those larger-than-life, all in a blast of tailpipe exhaust.

The Grateful Dead will mark the 50th anniversary of their American Beauty by releasing another “Angel’s Share,” a companion collection of never-before-heard demos, alternate mixes and outtakes from the LP, Number 215 on Rolling Stone‘s new list of the 500 Greatest Albums.
The October 15th arrival of American Beauty: The Angel’s Share follows the July 2020 release of Workingman’s Dead: The Angel’s Share which similarly excavated the band’s vaults from that 1970 album’s recording sessions. After months of doling out cryptic teases and indecipherable promos, HBO is revealing the inciting incident that triggers Nicole Kidman’s Undoing. And it’s killer.
Thirty seconds into the six-episode thriller’s first full-length trailer, which the premium cabler dropped on Wednesday, Kidman’s privileged socialite Grace is horrified to learn via the local news that a fellow mother in her close-knit community was “found bludgeoned to death.” The murder puts Grace and hubby Jonathan (Hugh Grant) at the center of a very public scandal, although how exactly they are connected to the tragedy remains unclear.

Michael Uppendahl has stepped in as director and executive producer on American Crime Story: Impeachment, Ryan Murphy’s upcoming FX limited series about the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky sex scandal. He replaces Richard Shepard, who recently exited the project.
Shepard signed on for the project in January, ahead of the coronavirus pandemic, which shut down all production and shifted all filming schedules, including Impeachment‘s. The show, a co-production of Touchstone Television, FX and Ryan Murphy Productions, was originally set to shoot in early spring. Delayed by the industry-wide shutdown, it is now slated to begin filming in early fall.
The pandemic and the scheduling bottleneck it has created, with shows slowly easing back into production with Covid safety protocols, has led to behind and in front of the camera changes on a number of projects. Another director previously booked for Impeachment also recently pulled out.

Drive-in movies are back, and it took the deadly Covid-19 virus to resurrect them. With cinemas closed and large public gatherings not a good idea no matter what some bikers, party-types and comb-over presidents might think, some adventurous souls have met with success in recent months by rejuvenating the largely dead-and-buried American pastime of drive-in moviegoing.
Adapting to strictures designed to maintain safety guidelines for social distancing and non-physical contact transactions, a few entrepreneurs and drive-in operators have made a go of it this summer with a variety of programming approaches. It’s an open question whether or not this will trigger a long-term resurrection of an institution that reached its peak in the late 1950s, when more than 4,000 drive-ins dotted the United States map. I should think not, for a variety of reasons.
But for the moment, the newly resurrected drive-ins are providing a good excuse to get out...

Taylor Swift is furious… a furious strummer. That much was clear from Sunday’s airing of ABC’s “Taylor Swift City of Lover Concert,” which had as its centerpiece a four-song acoustic segment that took up half the prime-time hour. You might imagine the pop superstar would use the intimacy of the format to indulge her delicate side, but if anything, the effect was the opposite, as she took to her guitar with enough fervor to give her solo renditions of those songs a higher energy level than they had on record, fully arranged. So, presumably, when she sang in the title track of the “Lover” album about having “guitar string scars,” she wasn’t being figurative. This is a woman who can bust a cap with a capo.
That succession of four acoustic songs — “Death by a Thousand Cuts,” “Cornelia Street” and “The Man” performed on guitar, followed by...

Singer-songwriter Becca Mancari has returned with the slinky new song “Hunter.” It’s the first new music Mancari has released since her album Good Woman came out in 2017.
“The letters in the mailbox say ‘I’m gonna hunt you down,'” Mancari sings, backed by a track of shimmering synthesizers and pointillist strings before a skittering drum groove and serrated-edge electric guitar enter the picture. The song was inspired by an traumatic and threatening series of letters telling her to “repent” from someone she’d known at church many years before.

Bob Dylan fans woke up this morning to the stunning news that the songwriter had released a 17-minute epic titled “Murder Most Foul.” “Greetings to my fans and followers, with gratitude for all your support and loyalty over the years,” Dylan wrote. “This is an unreleased song we recorded a while back that you might find interesting. Stay safe, stay observant, and may God be with you.”
It’s his first original song since 2012’s Tempest, though he has released three albums of cover songs associated with Frank Sinatra since then.

“More and more companies are closing their doors, and I think that’s the right response.
