As part of the 25th-anniversary celebration, The St. Louis International Film Festival reprises a special event from our 2009 edition by screening “Within Our Gates,” writer-director Oscar Micheaux’s impassioned response to D.W. Griffith’s “Birth of a Nation.” The film shines a revealing light on the racism of U.S. society, provocatively including scenes of lynching and attempted rape. Micheaux was a pioneering African-American filmmaker and novelist whose career stretched from the silent era through the 1940s. “Within Our Gates,” one of the oldest surviving “race” films,...

Life of Pi I don't always include the 3-D Blu-ray version when I put together this column, but with Life of Pi that's sort of the whole point right? I mean, if anyone talks about this movie the first, and sometimes only, thing they talk about are the visuals. Personally it was only an "okay" movie that I didn't really think amounted to much, but I expect it will have a rather impressive life on the home video market following its Oscar wins.
The Blob (Criterion Collection) Blu-ray I watched this Blu-ray on Sunday night and listened to the commentaries yesterday on and off throughout the day. This isn't exactly a feature-rich release and we're talking about more of a classic sci-fi film from the late '50s with a nostalgia factor for some and a certain level of intrigue from cinephiles, but is it a "must buy"? Popular Taiwanese television action drama “Black and White” makes it to the big screen in suitably bombastic fashion with feature “Black & White Episode 1: The Dawn of Assault”, co-written and directed by series originator Tsai Yueh Hsun. Interestingly, the huge-budgeted film is actually a prequel to the show, losing one of the leads in Vic Chou and seeing Mark Chao’s wildcard cop teaming with top Mainland character actor Huang Bo (“Guns and Roses”) instead, joined by a star studded supporting cast that includes Angelababy (“First Time”), Alex To (“Hit Team”), Leon Dai (“Reign of Assassins”), Terri Kwan (“Prince of Tears”), and Dino and Julio Acconci from the Hong Kong band Soler. Set prior to his partnering with Vic Chou’s Pi Zi, the film opens with daredevil cop Ying Xiong (Mark Chao), running into trouble with his superiors after yet another bust turns into carnage. Though in the bad books and undergoing psychological evaluation,...

Guns and Roses front-man Axl Rose gave his first live interview in over 20 years to Jimmy Kimmel last night to promote his 12 night gig at Hard Rock in Las Vegas, kicking off on Halloween. Axl engaged in self-effacing jokes that referred to his legendary lack of punctuality, and in general was a much more affable guest than one might imagine.
Unfortunately, the interview did not delve into any of the issues regarding Rose's nixing of the Rock n' Roll Hall of fame induction of Guns and Roses, the original lineup, nor any of his legendary feud with former lead guitarist Slash.

“Crazy Stone” and “Crazy Racer” director Ning Hao returns with “Guns and Roses”, his biggest-budgeted and most ambitious film to date. Unsurprisingly, the film sees the Chinese sixth generation helmer sticking to the kind of comedy caper that he made his name with, though this time casting his net a little wider by including explosive action set pieces, along with a little romance and wartime intrigue. The film also sees him working again with his usual players, including Guo Tao, Liu Hua, and Huang Bo, who are joined by Fan Wei (“Beginning of the Great Revival”), Tao Hong (“You Deserve to be Single”) and Cheng Yuanyuan, with newcomer Lei Jiayin in the lead role. The film proved even more popular than Ning’s previous outings, emerging as one of the highest grossing hits during the 2012 Labour Day holiday season in China. Presented in partnership between Subway Cinema and the Film Society of Lincoln Center with programming support from Japan Society, America’s biggest festival of popular Asian film is opening with Vulgaria: Described as “astonishingly filthy,” “outrageous,” and “displaying a reckless abandon in mentioning genitals” Pang Ho-cheung’s show business satire pushes good taste as far as it can go, and then it keeps on going. What’s most astonishing about this lewd, crude, and hilariously dirty film is that it achieves all its shocking effects with nothing more than dialogue.
In addition, Doomsday Book and Guns And Roses make their North American premieres as the Centerpiece Selections.

A favourite around these parts, writer-director Ning Hao is set to unleash his latest Chinese caper movie, Guns And Roses, in the mainland on 24 April, and we now have the film's first trailer, courtesy of distributors Galloping Horse. The man behind such hit comedies as Crazy Stone and Crazy Racer may still have a film languishing in Sarft-imposed limbo (Western Sunshine aka No Man's Land), but that hasn't stopped him from assembling a cast of familiar faces for a new action-packed period heist flick, which appears to owe more than a small debt to Jiang Wen's blockbuster Let The Bullets Fly. Haley Joel Osment, whose career was set in motion with the sight to see dead people with The Sixth Sense, is set to star in Wake the Dead, a contemporary retelling of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein based on Steven Niles’s graphic novel.
Osment will play Victor Franklin, a college student who attempts to bring the dead back to life. Obviously for dramatic sakes, it doesn’t go quite well. Jay Russell is directing, and former Guns and Roses axe man, Slash, is producing. [Variety]
It will be very interesting to see Osment playing a more adult role since he has been out of the spotlight for awhile. I wonder if he will end up like many successful child actors, peaking early.

From seeing the dead (and hanging out with Bruce Willis) to waking them. That’s where former “Sixth Sense” star Haley Joel Osment, now all grown up and being a man and such, will be headed when he headlines “Wake the Dead”, one of a gazillion Frankenstein projects currently making its way through Hollywood. Apparently Hollywood studios have found a renewed appreciation of Mary Shelley’s classic. Either that, or not having to pay rights fees to use the character was too good to pass up. “Wake the Dead” also happens to be the Frankenstein project being produced by “Guns and Roses” guitarist Slash, if, you know, that makes the film more desirable in your opinion. I personally gotta ask what a guy who plays guitars for a living is doing producing and developing movies, but whatever. Dear Miley Cyrus,
Please do not screw up anymore more great rock, metal or punk songs, specifically anything from Metallica, Green Day, Nirvana or Guns and Roses.
Thank you.
While performing in concert in Quito, Ecuador, Cyrus decided to give a dedication to one of the bands that inspired her growing up.
Nirvana.
Cyrus performed a cover of “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” while also making a cutesy reference to singing the song with her younger brother at home.
Although the tribute to the band that helped define a generation was noble, the actual song delivery was painful to the ears. Cyrus simply can’t deliver the tonal grit of late Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain. It would have been better had she tried to adapt the song, rather than imitate a vocal range that isn’t in her or meant for her.
While I’m sure Cyrus fans probably enjoyed it,...

Go and see Sucker Punch this weekend and you’ll notice that the end credits are accompanied by a cover version of Love is the Drug and some footage of a big song and dance number. We’ve heard that this is from a scene sadly deleted from the theatrical cut, but expected to appear intact on the eventual DVD and Blu-ray release.
Indeed, a whole series of musical numbers were cut from the film, and some of them were quite surprising – none more so than an inspired black-metal cover of Rebecca Black’s Friday.
Yep. Before it was the viral smash it is today, this year’s most played song was turned on its head, twisted inside out and smashed bloody in a cover version by Sucker Punch‘s Emily Browning and Guns and Roses guitarist Slash. Those who have heard it have described it as “literally unbelievable”.

Celebrity Couples! Stephanie Seymour, a former Victoria's Secret model and internationally known supermodel who starred in Guns and Roses rock music videos and was once on the cover of Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition, has reportedly gotten back together with her very much estranged paper-tycoon husband Peter Brandt. Photos of them vacationing in St Barts with their children over the Christmas holidays were published today on the Daily Mail. [Dec. 28] The celebrity couple made tabloid headlines earlier this year in what many celebrity news writers say was one of the ugliest celebrity divorce battles to date. Lawsuit allegations of infidelity, drug abuse and wild spending sprees by the Victoria's secret skinny girl were his "grounds" for divorce and custody battle, but it seems her bikini and the chance to frolic in the sun with their kids may have won the cold blooded paper mogul back over.

The second animated movie about a supervillain to arrive this year, how does DreamWorks Animation's Megamind stack up?
It's the age-old story of superhero versus super villain, but with a twist. In the latest work from DreamWorks Animation, the twist is the point of view. In a normal superhero movie, the hero is the center of attention, but in Megamind, the star is the villain. The ‘hero' of our movie is a big-headed, blue-skinned, super genius villain named Megamind.
From a fractured planet comes forth a little pod containing a baby, Megamind (Will Ferrell), and his pet minion, Minion (David Cross). From a nearby planet comes the pod containing Megamind's future sworn enemy, Metro Man (Brad Pitt). From the first day of school, the two were natural rivals. Metro Man was the handsome one with all the powers, Megamind the blue freak from the nearby prison. Every hero needs a villain.

Another rocker wants to get into the horror game. Yes, you're reading this right. Slash from Guns and Roses (an old rock band kids) is teaming up with Scout Productions to form Slasher Productions. The fledgling company will focus on “contemporary horror fare with a nod to the thrillers of the ’70s and ’80s”...
Their first project, the horror/thriller Nothing To Fear, is already moving forward. What is the film about? Deadline got the scoop. The plot synopsis for Nothing To Fear definitely falls in line with the studio’s old school horror moniker. It follows a young family that tries to start over in a small town in rural Kansas, only to be tormented by “an ancient demon with an insatiable blood lust”. The film’s script, by Jonathan W.C. Mills, is set and ready to go into production 1st quarter of next year.

Guitarist for Guns and Roses and Velvet Revolver and guitar god to many Slash is going to start making horror films. He’s teamed up with Scout Productions to start up Slasher Films (get it?) and they aim to “edgy contemporary horror fare with a nod to the thrillers of the ’70s and ’80s.’
Their first production will be Nothing To Fear which deals with “a young family as it tries to reinvent itself by moving to a small town in rural Kansas. The family is tormented by an ancient demon with an insatiable blood lust.” According to a statement from Slash: “I’ve always been a huge horror fan and creating films that take you back to the days where horror movies actually scared the hell out of you is something I’ve always wanted to do. My audience is made up of young, edgy, discerning consumers, with an...

If you aren’t watching Leverage, the modern Robin Hood show on TNT, you’re really missing out. Putting more fun and adventure into the con game every week, and providing a good mix of criminal comeuppance and character, the show is getting better and better.
I don’t know about you, but Eliot is definitely one of my favorites on the show, and Christian Kane took part in a Q & A recently. With not only several film and television titles under his belt, but also a blossoming singing career, Christian has a very interesting, multi-faceted guy, and the interview resulted in quite the exchange.
Before you get too wrapped up in the interview, check out his single. You’ll be glad you did.

It was an extremely loud night for charity in La on Sunday, November 22, when Slash joined Ozzy Osbourne, Billy Idol, Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello and Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington for a charity concert to benefit Layn (the Los Angeles Youth Network).
It was a star-studded event to make any Rock fan’s mouth water. Slash played an awesome rendition of Paradise City with former Guns and Roses bandmates Duff McKagan and Steve Adler. Also at the event were Wolfmother’s Andrew Stockdale, Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro and Blink 182’s Travis Barker.
Layn helps some of the 12,000 homeless youths that sleep on La’s streets every night by “providing street outreach, food, emergency shelter and transitional living programs, with a professional, caring staff in a nurturing and safe environment”. To find out about the charity, visit their website.
