This film was made by a small production company and most of the actors are unfamiliar. However, in spite of this, the film is a well-made drama about an amazing man of faith, Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He was a German Lutheran minister who managed to make a nuisance of himself--and as a result he spent the last part of WWII in prison awaiting execution.

Overall, this is a very good film and was a treat as a historical and religious film--though its Biblical message is not even close to heavy-handed or preachy (so anyone can enjoy it and its message). The acting, sets and direction were also quite good. My only reservation concerns the tempo of the film--it is very, very slow-paced and low-key. Some might be put off by this, but if you can get through this you'll likely enjoy learning about this interesting man. Not great, but very good--especially with such a small budget.

By the way, I did a tiny bit of research about this man and was surprised to see that the actor playing him actually looked very, very much like Bonhoeffer.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer is one of my favorite "faith heroes". A friend introduced me to his "Cost of discipleship" when I was at college and I was delighted to read, some years later, his "Letters from prison". Dietrich Bonhoeffer was, indeed, a true Christian and a man to admire. So when I learned that "Agent of Grace" was being released, I was immediately caught up. I saw the film some days ago but, sadly, it did not meet my expectations. I found the film rather boring and confusing: from start to end the emotional level is a flat line, no important ups and downs, no emotions spoken out (the scriptwriters apparently forgot the richness and profoundness of "Letters from prison"). The historical backdrop (WW2, Nazi's rule and conspiracy against Hitler, etc.) is not clear enough for the average spectator to understand what and why things in the film are going on they way they are. But most of all, the movie fails to show the inner struggle of a young man that has everything to loose but chooses to be faithful to his Lord.

This is a good film, and certainly relevant as the church struggles to find its place and vocation in the world today. It is a humble picture that gets by on the strength of its (true) story, and indeed, the incredible witness of Bonhoeffer himself. Both Bonhoeffer enthusiasts and those unfamiliar with his life and works will find this film interesting. It succeeds (as much as a 90-minute film can) in showing how Bonhoeffer wrestled with, and was challenged by, the events of his day. Most Christians (forgive the stereotyping, but I am one, so give me some slack) tend to judge the world as a young creation gone wrong, whereas Dietrich Bonhoeffer viewed the middle of the 20th century on its own terms -- as a world come of age, and acted accordingly.

The acting was good, the lighting was good, the sound was good, and the locations were good, but the story, the script, was horrible. And you can't make a good movie without a good script. There is no through-line. There is very little lead up to certain scenes so that you understand what the scene is about where it is and what's going on. It's just like "Bonhoeffer appears here and says this and he appears there and says that." You don't really get to know anyone in the film, including Bonhoeffer. And about 20 or 25 minutes into the film, when you feel like only moments ago Hitler had invaded Poland, you're suddenly three years into the war and you have no concept of that time passing and what's happened to anyone in Germany except Bonhoeffer and a few friends - and even then not much - and you hear nothing of significance about the death camps. In good movies there is a through-line and there's effort made to explain certain situations to the viewer through conversation between the actors who might be saying something like we've got to meet on Friday at the church because we've got to do this or that and then maybe a bit more build up and you show people getting to the meeting in a clandestine fashion, maybe a close call with the Gestapo, then there's the meeting so you know what it's about, the risks, people took, etc. All we know is that they were working against Hitler and if you know anything about Bonhoeffer and the history of the resistance in Germany, you know they were working against Hitler already. We need details about what's going on and something that grabs us emotionally. Of course, millions of Jews being exterminated is emotional but it's dealt with very little in this movie. I would not recommend this movie.

This is one of those true stories that make your stomach churn.

A Pastor gets hung by Nazis's. Bad things happen to good people; even one's with the best of intentions.

If you expect a Hollywood blockbuster, you will be disappointed. If you expect a movie done on a low budget, but still looks OK, then you will enjoy this one.

This is a good movie. Sure, they could have done more. But they have done enough to get the point across.

People die for the right causes. They choose to die with a good conscience than live with a "yellow" one. This man deserves our attention and admiration.

See the film with this attitude, and you will be rewarded; if not, you'll be disappointed.

He comes across as a sheepish wimpy guy who can't quite make up his mind whether to fight the Nazi's or not.

Here is a man who did so many great things and ministered to so many people and it barely touched on any of it. Nothing from His writings or showed him of much depth whatsoever, but they do include some spiel about how he admired Gandhi and encouraged his seminarians to listen to him. Huh????

He ministered to prisoners for a year and a half. They had one 5 min scene where he prays a prayer with a cellmate and that's it. His "cost of discipleship" book is considered a modern classic and they included nothing from it.

If I knew nothing about him, I would Never think he made any difference whatsoever and wonder why anyone would bother to make a movie about him at all. This Does such a disservice to his impact during the war; what a waste.

In an age where genuine concern for others seems to be conspicuous by its absence this spare yet profoundly moving film gives us a glimpse of a great spirit. Christian or not, it's essential viewing. Theologian Bonhoeffer was a man for all seasons, following the voice of his conscience to the end. The recent release of this film makes one wonder why it took so long to have Bonhoeffers story retold on the screen. He could have escaped from the Nazis but chose to stay with his people, helping wherever he could. Right through the film we find ourselves asking what we would do in the same situation? This story is rich food for thought and discussion.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer's writings have had a profound influence on my life as a Christian, and I eagerly anticipated watching this movie and finding out more about his life. Words can hardly express my disappointment. This movie was disjointed...it gave no background about his life, no historical context, and nothing about his great writings (except a brief, passing reference to "The Cost of Discipleship" by a colleague at the beginning of the movie.) Instead, we see him enjoying jazz (apparently in the States) and chilling out with his friends before he decides to go back to Germany. Apparently to show his human side. OK, I'm ready for the dramatic part. The part where he stands up for his faith. Instead of emphasizing that, we get a very badly acted romance with a 17-year-old schoolgirl. Whether or not that actually took place, it should not have been a major portion of the movie. Now...still waiting for the dramatic part, or some narration explaining what his writings were all about...or SOMETHING to make us know a little bit of the greatness of this man. drum-roll.....waiting..... ....waiting.....ZIP. Nada. This is the kind of movie that gives "Christian Films" a bad name. All they had to do was set up a structure for the movie to follow, with some background...even some voice-overs, or flashbacks to him preaching from his works...some narrative about who he was and where he had been. But no...this is what we got. Hardly fitting for a hero of the Faith.

Bonhoeffer was a very well done movie about the legendary Christian leader and minister Deitrich Bonhoeffer. It told his story, warts and all. It showed the philosophical dilemna that a Man of God struggled through and eventually is sacrificed for. It is a insight into a man who wanted to serve God and mankind, the conflicts, the way he touched others lives, then and now through is great writings. I recommend it.

Imagine you were someone who knew nothing of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and you thought that this movie might shed a little light on the life of a man who is renowned in Christian intellectual circles. You would be sorely disappointed by this offering. The movie gives no account of Boenhoeffer's early life, he springs fully adult like Adam in the Garden. The movie also gives no real account of later life. It portrays a series of vignettes in which he is peripherally involved in events in Germany, a passive observer of tumultuous occurrences that might seem to be of importance if only we had some explanation of what they were, who was involved, and how they came to be. None of that. Bonhoeffer drifts along in the stream of occurrences until he is swept away to a Gestapo prison where he makes a poor attempt at fooling the bad guys and is eventually killed. Apparently, Bonhoeffer was an admirer of Gandhi. Well, there you go.

I gave it three stars because Robert Joy does a good job of portraying the Gestapo menace. His is the only character that has an obvious motive which is carried out as one would expect. Everyone else is a two-dimensional NPC, reacting as programmed for reasons that are not given and not apparent.

In Mexico this movie was aired only in PayTV. Dietrich Bonhoeffer's life, is a true example about a good German and specially, about a good man. The conversations between Tukur's character and the Nazi prosecutor are specially interesting. A true ideas' war: two different Germans, both with faith in there believes. Bonhoeffer was a very complex person: man, freedom fighter, boyfriend, churchman and a great intellectual; Ulrich Tukur is outstanding as Bonhoeffer. I recommended this film a lot, specially in this difficult times for the planet. In Mexico we don't know a lot about Pastor Bonhoeffer life and legacy, this is a great work for rescue a forgotten hero.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a true Christian, a theologian, a spy for Allies and a great person, who dared to stay in Nazi Germany and preach what he believed was true - The Word Of God. We all know this sad story, so there is no spoiler here, the movie shows tragic events of 1939-1945 Germany, with all the evils of Hitler's regime, oppression, executions, glaring false propaganda, and above all - the inevitability of death penalty. This is a very decent film, almost a documentary in its delivery, with swift pace through the war years and all main events depicted well and sorely truthful. Chilling evil of Nazi regime is shown extremely realistic, and the tragedy of those few who dared to murder Hitler is all the more naked and fragile. The weaker side is a low budget and it shows, also, a little bit amateurish performance of some actors is evident in several scenes. These weaknesses aside, the film is good and must be watched as a great example of Godly man fight

I watched, entranced and mesmerized, by the vocal and physical acting. The roles each character played were done with excellence.The lyrics,the words, every gesture, the sunrise, told it all.The movie spoke to me. It enlightened me to a different perception of a person who believes in mankind. Who believes in peace and gentle behavior. I was also held in disbelieve, by the sacrifices and human dignity was portrayed. Power without grace, is demented and without feelings. To want power at the cost of mankind, is so unbelievable. This movie made me so afraid for the people who are no longer in this world. And, it is with sadness that I think of them. I like this movie for the conversations and face expressions to it all. May this movie be blessed.

No doubts, an admirable film. For performance and for for the wise use of low budget to propose not only a biopic about Dietrich Bonhoeffer but a fair remind of fundamental values defining our society, the danger , in its different forms, the moral dilemma of a brilliant teologian and the sacrifice for save the other and the sense of a time. Sure, many critics are valable but the film is just decent and seductive for the inspired exploration of a difficult subject, easy to be prey of pathetic temptations. It is a sketch and a profound religious film because the essence of the work of Bonhoeffer is to serve God being profound helpful to His believers . A film about moral, maybe too simple for many tastes but real honest. Short, just an admirable portrait of a man and, in some serious measure, portrait of our times.

Wow. What a humbling and sobering story. With no Hollywood A-listers (thankfully), this cast made the story real. Let us remember the humans can inflict. Let us remember what passive, look-the-other-way humans will tolerate. Ninety years ago seems like a different world, but it's a small blink in the history of humans. Ulrich Tukur (Bonhoeffer) and his colleagues bring the horror and almost inevitability of the destruction of innocence if good people, if Christians, will not stand against evil as it assiduously devours what is godly and good, the future is bleak. Let us not think our current situation in the US is more innocent with the infiltration of Marxist thinking in academia and corporations. It seems to be Germany in the early 1930s. Take heed.
