Four years after exploring the interwoven horrors of adolescence and parenthood in the bold neo-noir Knives and Skin (the film's solemn cover of the Go-Go's "Our Lips Are Sealed" is still one of the most memorable scenes I've watched in the past decade), filmmaker Jennifer Reeder returns to the haunted halls of high school to expose more societal injustices, toxic masculinity, and timely anxieties in Perpetrator.
Centered on teenager Jonny Baptiste (Kiah McKirnan), who is teetering on the verge of adulthood as she grapples with her unique shapeshifting ability with a little unconventional help from her stern-yet-caring Aunt Hildie (Alicia Silverstone), Perpetrator is now streaming on Shudder and playing theatrically in New York.
To celebrate the release of the latest "coming-of-rage" movie in Jennifer Reeder's impressive filmography, Daily Dead had the great pleasure of catching up with the director in a new video interview to discuss the origin of Perpetrator,...

John Stamos revealed on the “Good Guys” podcast (via Insider) that he had Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen booted from “Full House” when they were 11 months old as their persistent crying on set drove him crazy. The firing only lasted a couple of days, as the replacement babies for the Olsen twins proved even worse to be around. Stamos, who played Jesse Katsopolis on all eight seasons of “Full House,” was filming a scene where his character and Dave Coulier’s Joey change Michelle Tanner’s diaper. The Olsen twins switched off playing Michelle during the show’s run.
“We’re doing the scene. Joey and I were changing the baby, right? And Danny [Bob Saget] is gone and said, ‘Take care of the kids.’ ‘Yeah, we got it. We got it,'” Stamos said. “So, we’re carrying the baby downstairs and we take her in the kitchen and we hose her down.

Since portraying Michelle Tanner on Full House for eight seasons, the Olsen twins have been American sweethearts. When the ABC sitcom ended in 1995, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen took their talents to the big screen in It Takes Two. However, fans might be shocked to learn that the mansion where the movie was filmed sat vacant for years and was recently destroyed.

Though many fans consider It Takes Two Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s best film, the sisters appeared in several TV movies while on Full House. They include To Grandmother’s House We Go (1992), Double, Double, Toil and Trouble (1993), and How the West Was Fun (1994). But the siblings’ first full-length feature film was 1995’s It Takes Two.

Although they’ve never really been seriously considered by official voters, The Go-Go’s are your favorites for 2021 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They received 20% of the vote in our recent poll asking which snubbed band most deserves to be chosen to be inducted. Melissa Etheridge was tops in our separate poll about overlooked female artists. Look out for our poll featuring male artists soon.
The all-female group from the 1980s originally was started by Belinda Carlisle, Jane Wiedlin, Elissa Bello and Margot Olavarria. Other members who would most likely receive induction would be Charlotte Caffey, Gina Schock, Kathy Valentine and Paula Jean Brown. They beat out Duran Duran with 13% and The B-52’s with 11%.
At the delayed 2020 induction ceremony for the Hof, bands Depeche Mode, Doobie Brothers, Nine Inch Nails and T-Rex are finally getting their due.

At the delayed 2020 induction ceremony for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, bands Depeche Mode, Doobie Brothers, Nine Inch Nails and T-Rex are finally getting their due. Each of them waited a while to get in, so which other snubbed bands should be strongly considered for 2021? Vote in our new poll below which features 12 artists.
At the previous 2019 ceremony, voters also saw that long-overlooked bands The Cure, Def Leppard, Roxy Music and The Zombies finally got their due. With five to eight artists going in each year, bands seem to be the most populous. Male artists also have a fairly easy time getting in, but critics often complain about the lack of female artists being inducted. Our most recent poll results about female artists cried out for Melissa Etheridge to make the cut in 2021. Watch out soon when we have a poll about male artists.

Alison Ellwood’s “The Go-Go’s,” a documentary about that pioneering all-female band that premieres on July 31 on Showtime, is one of my favorite nonfiction films of 2020. But as I said when I interviewed Ellwood and the band at the Sundance Film Festival in January, I can’t even pretend to be an objective reporter when it comes to this movie, because I’ve known the Go-Go’s since before their first album came out in 1981, and I wrote about them often and with affection over the years.
As someone who was around the band during their first years of existence and sporadically since then, I found that Ellwood told the story with sympathy but also honesty. The Go-Go’s were always tougher than their frothy, happy image suggested, and there was always infighting and excesses of various kinds — and the film shows all the dimensions of the story,...

Even if you’ve seen the footage before, in L.A. punk docs and Vh-1 specials, it’s still thrilling to watch: Five women on stage, their outfits resembling a day-glo mix of thrift-store chic and a temper tantrum’s aftermath, two different kinds of eyeshadow and smeared streaks of rouge fighting for dominance, bashing out crude anthems at the Masque Club. “They played three songs, and two of them were the same song,” one witness remembers about that gig.

Do not ask the Go-Go’s what they thought of their infamous 1997 episode of VH1’s Behind the Music. They did not like it.

Showtime has released the official trailer for The Go-Go’s, an upcoming documentary that delves into the wholly unique story of the titular all-female New Wave band. The doc will premiere on Showtime August 1st at 9 p.m. Et.
The clip offers a broad breakdown of the band’s lightning-fast journey to stardom, which started in the late Seventies when they were just a fledgling act in the Los Angeles punk scene. “Their set was three songs long and two of them were the same song!” remembers punk poet Pleasant Gehman with a laugh.

Hilary Duff is back with new music and we couldn't be happier! On Wednesday, the 32-year-old singer and actress released a cover of Third Eye Blind's "Never Let You Go" that she did with producer Rac and her husband Matthew Koma. Not only does it mark the couple's first track together, but it also marks Duff's first new song in almost four years. She previously released her album Breathe In. Breathe Out. in 2015, and eventually covered Fleetwood Mac's "Little Lies" for her hit show Younger later that year.
From the upbeat tempo to the soft vocals, the new cover definitely feels reminiscent of Duff's earlier songs like "So Yesterday" or her "Our Lips Are Sealed" cover with her sister, Haylie Duff. Even though Duff is currently busy with Younger and the Disney+ reboot of Lizzie McGuire, is it too much to ask for another album? Maybe she can sing...

The all-female punk band that defined mall culture in the early 1980s with the opening tune of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, The Go-Go’s are still shockingly kicking ass in their 60s as a new lively, definitive documentary captures. Exploring the winding path from punk rock obscurity in L.A. to pop stardom and the lows between, director Alison Ellwood never misses a beat as the band looks back at how they came together on their own without the intervention of a label cooking them up in an A&r lab. Through interviews with band members, friends, and business associates combined with archival materials, Ellwood’s The Go-Go’s feels as fresh and feisty as their music.

In the terrific documentary “The Go-Go’s,” there’s a tasty clip of the band playing an early club gig in 1979, when they were part of the L.A. punk scene. They wear bushy black hair and pale white makeup (with rouge!), as if they were trying to be mannequin versions of Darby Crash, and they have the primitive rickety sound of people who were only just learning to play their instruments. Yet despite the raw aura, the gift that would take them far comes through — in the contrapuntal singing, the wobbly vibrance of their hooks. They had yet to figure out what they were doing, but seeing these young women up on stage in the ratty club milieu, you can already tell that history had a plan for them.
“The Go-Go’s” is And it does so by spotlighting how the revolutionary aspect of their journey was embedded in everything they did.

The meteoric and ruinous rise to fame is more than a movie cliché; it’s a virtual guarantee for just about any artist without his or her head screwed on straight. But “The Go-Go’s” tackles the seminal all-female ’80s rock band with such honesty, openness and effervescence that it not only rises above that clichéd, almost telegraphed arc but transcends the ranks of other music documentaries to offer a story you desperately want to keep watching, even when you already know where it’s going.
It’s fascinating to think of the performers of “Our Lips Are Sealed,” “Head Over Heels” and even their earliest hit “We Got the Beat” as punk rockers, but “The Go-Go’s” reminds audiences of the band’s scrappy origins as a group of young women inspired by the Los Angeles punk scene to start their own band. Though members Belinda Carlisle, Jane Wiedlin,...

Director Elise Duran’s “Can You Keep A Secret?” makes it clear from the very first moments the animated opening credits play over the Go-Go’s “Our Lips Are Sealed” that it’s going to be a sweet, if not satisfactory time spent in the golden-hour glow of this romantic comedy’s world. Based on Sophie Kinsella’s book, her first standalone novel after the success of her “Confessions of a Shopaholic” series, . That said, it lacks a sense of uniqueness to set it apart from other female-centric book-to-screen adaptations.

Narratives surrounding disappearances, especially those of children, are becoming more and more popular. With the success of shows like Stranger Things, Sharp Objects, and Dark, it’s easy to see why. There’s some really good mystery there, which is primarily due to the investigative element that holds those shows together. However, in the case of Jennifer Reeder’s Knives and Skin, there isn’t one. What was promoted as being an investigation into the disappearance of a missing girl turns into an exploration of all the drama and secrets that lie within the film’s suburbia.

American independent cinema has gone through several generations since the end of the 1990s. The accelerated evolution might mirror the technological advances of the past 20 years, from the easy availability of early, consumer-grade digital cameras to the ubiquity of streaming platforms, as well as new social networks and the rising impact of regional film festivals.
You can put all that in perspective by spending a week in, of all places, Wrocław, Poland, where the ninth edition of the American Film Festival concluded this fall. For better or worse, Broadway’s Head Over Heels is stuck with being known as “the Go-Go’s musical” – better because of the good will floating on stage with all those lighter-than-air hits by Belinda Carlisle, Jane Wiedlin, et.al., worse because the hard-working new production can’t seem to keep itself from popping those effervescence tune bubbles one by one.

Pack your bags, because we're going on a sartorial journey with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Before they were running their fashion empire (or back when they were starting out with Walmart), the Olsen twins made a career out of traveling the world. You know, in a straight-to-video movie kind of way. And whether they were avoiding their ambassador grandfather in Passport to Paris or dodging assassins in Our Lips are Sealed, the Olsens did it with a very of-the-time sense of style. And of course, no movie epitomizes Olsen twin vacation fashion quite like Holiday in the Sun, which sadly is not available online. What's especially interesting though is that even among the most questionable looks of the early aughts, the twins were major trendsetters. Sometimes their clothes even got a little prophetic — you can see the origins of Mary-Kate and Ashley's current bundled up look as early as Winning London.

Amber Heard was nineteen when she played the title character in Jonathan Levine's slasher film All the Boys Love Mandy Lane; she can at least get away with playing a seventeen year-old. Mandy Lane, which debuts this month on Blu-ray, is better known for its reputation of having been shelved for seven years following its debut at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival for reasons best served by another article. Up to this point, Ms. Heard was already a veteran of four films and several television appearances; this is her first real starring role, as the film rests on her shoulders. She gives quite a remarkably natural performance and having seen her work since this 2005-lensed outing, I would attribute her onscreen “nervousness” as the object of affection by testosterone-driven wolves in her midst to her skill as a serious dramatic actress than to an inability to relax...

The cat's out of the bag about the post-credits teaser in "The Wolverine," and if you missed this zinger in the theater, it's well worth seeking out online.
Spoilers ahoy! If you haven't seen "The Wolverine," turn back now!
Director James Mangold wasn't always too keen on the idea, though, or at least he wasn't a fan of them in other movies. As he told reporters on a set visit to Australia last year, "The 'tags after the credits' thing has never been my favorite thing in movies. In theater, there's the idea of the encore and I'm not opposed to it, but what I'm really focused on at this point is the majesty of the best films I see are films that don't panhandle for an extra laugh later, but actually deliver the goods."
When he was in New York City two weeks ago, Mangold elaborated. "When I spoke about that,...

When I heard that The CW was developing a prequel to Sex & The City that focused on Carrie Bradshaw's introduction to Manhattan in the mid-80's, I was ... wary.
In the first place, The Carrie Diaries changed Carrie's backstory. In Satc she spoke about how her father walked out on her and her mother when she was young, and she never saw him again. In Tcd, her mother has just died, and her father is trying to raise Carrie and her sullen sister (who we also never heard of in Satc) by himself.
That I can handle, but the fact that it takes place in the 80's was a potential deal breaker. I try to steer clear of any TV show or movie set in the 80's because they usually get it so ... wrong. It's either so eye-rollingly obvious or annoyingly anachronistic (Excuse me! Your movie takes place in early 1983, but features "Karma Chameleon,...

We know we’ve poked fun at Gwyneth Paltrow for a myriad of celebrity sins: telling working moms to just get an assistant, rapping in public, invading our precious Glee on multiple occasions, um, Country Strong. All that would be instantly forgiven, however, if GPal manages to make this Go-Gos musical a reality. The Hollywood Reporter writes that Paltrow is currently “negotiating to collaborate” with the ’80s pop band to produce the musical; Belinda Carlisle and her fellow band members are allegedly considering the option to pen new songs. You know…maybe there’s a reason Gwyneth’s traditional-style musical career never really took off. Well…there are probably a lot of reasons her musical career never took off, but this is would make it all worth while!
Of course, even without Paltrow’s pull a Go-Go’s musical is a genius idea. “Our Lips Are Sealed”? Please. Mamma Mia!

Richard Phillips Gagosian Gallery Through October 20, 2012
I am running late, so I park the Ducati on the sidewalk and toss the keys to an eager production assistant. It is incredibly hot and crowded as I push my way through a crowd of background actors to the location, which has been carefully designed to look like a gallery. Wardrobe has given me an antique Ramones t-shirt (which actually has some of Debbie Harry's vintage blood on the sleeve) and a period Hugo Boss Nazi SS uniform jacket with five firing-squad bullet holes through the left lapel (vintage blood carefully removed). Also, store-torn Alexander McQueen jeans (a gift from an Olsen twin, I think) and flip-flops, which are decorated with pictures of colorful monkeys.
I stop to talk to Rachel Weisz, who seems to remember me from her chemistry reading for the part of a "kindly doctor" in Stasi Sluts II but suddenly excuses herself,...

It seems that Hilary Duff is “Coming Clean”…about her potential involvement in a serious car accident back in 2010. Nailed the intro, ya’ll! Seriously though, according to TMZ the actress/singer was just served with a lawsuit regarding a crash that occurred on December 12, 2010, during which Duff allegedly “plowed into” a vehicle driven by one Ms. Rachel Owens. Owens now claims that the accident resulted in her experiencing “great mental, physical and nervous pain and suffering,” all of which “prevented from attending her usual occupation for a period of time in the future.” Getting slapped with charges almost two years after the fact? That’s “So Yesterday.” If you ask us, it sounds like someone was trying to “Play With Fire.” Haha! In all seriousness though, this whole thing sounds horrible for everyone involved.

The new baby boy is little brother to Sisto and Lane's first child, 2-and-a-half-year-old daughter Charlie-Ballerina, who received a special gift from her new sibling...well, kinda. The "Rush Hour" hitmaker Jane Wiedlin is confident the upcoming summer tour will remind her bandmates just how much fun they had writing and recording hits like "We Got the Beat" and "Our Lips Are Sealed" three decades ago - and that will prompt them to return to the studio to begin work on a new album.
She tells Billboard.com, "We've talked about it for years. It's one of those ongoing conversations. I was thinking about how few records we actually have made in our 33 years and how we could be doing a lot better. Because The Go Go's isn't a full-time band anymore and the fact we've scattered over the whole world, it makes it really hard to commit to things like making records."
"Having said that, now that the interwebs (sic) are so big and people release one song at a time... the structure of making music has become less rigid.

With Sidney Prescott's (Neve Campbell) return to Woodsboro, the Ghostface murders take on a new twist, referencing horror-remakes in the upcoming "Scream 4." So it stands to reason that there would be a throwback (or several) to the original "Scream" film that jump started the franchise 15 years ago.

If you suffer from an aversion to Twilight, look away now: someone is about to diss one of the Olsen twins. It will get ugly
Honestly, Twilight has ruined everything. Once upon a time, fairytales were quite content to simply be fairytales. Not now, though – thanks to Twilight, they've all got to be turned into dimwitted allegories for sexual awakening full of mumbling, silly-haired teenage boys and distant-looking girls who can only communicate by sighing through their nose as loudly as they can.
The first warning came with the announcement of a Twilight-informed Little Red Riding Hood remake, but now there's also Beastly to deal with. It's based on Beauty and the Beast except, because Twilight exists now, it probably won't be very good. Let's comb through the latest Beastly trailer to see just how much we should brace ourselves for its arrival ...
