Trying to get Hollywood to change direction is not unlike trying to steer an elephant by poking it in its thick-hided ass with a matchstick; it doesn’t exactly respond like a Maserati.
And that’s a problem because there are some box office signs suggesting the American movie industry needs – may, in fact, desperately need, and soon – to change the path it’s been cannon-balling along on since the late 1970s. Unfortunately, Hollywood’s history suggests nobody should hold their breath waiting for someone to turn the wheel until after that bus has gone over a cliff. American moviemaking is great at glomming on to technological innovation – Dolby sound, 3-D, CGI — anything that brings in a crowd by offering a showier show. The industry’s track record on what to do when the crowd stops coming — on divining and interpreting and appropriately responding to changes in the cultural landscape — is,...

After David Mitchell’s 2004 novel, Cloud Atlas, nested six competing eras within each other for a genre-bending fantasy, 2006’s follow-up, Black Swan Green, felt (fairly or otherwise) like a deliberate narrowing of scope. In The Thousand Autumns Of Jacob De Zoet, Mitchell again confines himself to just one time period, but his imagination remains unbounded in this exuberant epic set in turn-of-the-19th-century Japan. After the family of Jacob De Zoet’s would-be bride snubs him due to his lack of income, he accepts a posting with the colonial authority in Dutch-controlled Indonesia, on the promise of a decent ...

Radiohead stars Jonny Greenwood and Thom Yorke served up the first big surprise at this year's Glastonbury festival when they hit the stage for an unannounced set. The bandmates were introduced by festival organizer Michael Eavis, who built up the moment by calling it "the biggest surprise of the weekend."
A grinning Yorke then stepped forward and announced, "Hi, my name is Thomas Yorke," before playing his "The Eraser" hit solo on the piano. He went on to perform "Harrowdown Hill" and "Black Swan" before Greenwood joined him onstage for a rendition of "Cymbal Rush", "Wishes Fishes/Arpeggi" and "Pyramid Song".
They closed their short set with Radiohead fan favorites "Karma Police" and "Street Spirit (Fade Out)" and then Yorke told fans to "have a brilliant festival" as he shuffled offstage.
Meanwhile, rapper Mos Def was forced to cancel his appearance at the Glastonbury festival in England due to a death in the family.

Undercovers isn't just coming to NBC in the fall.
It's debuting on the network as one of TV's most anticipated shows, and for good reason: it's the first small screen project from J.J. Abrams since Fringe.
We've already given readers a sneak peek at the pilot episode of this spy dramedy, but now we can reveal a few more teases and spoilers. How come? It's premiere script has actually been leaked online, revealing the following tidbits...
We first meet main characters Samantha and Steven Bloom as they prepare for a wedding. These retired spies are married and own a floundering catering business. She's the chef, he's the business man. Samantha's slacker sister, Lizzy (Jessica Parker Kennedy), also works for the company. We meet Gerald McRaney's Carlton Shaw. A cynical CIA agent, he's worked for the agency for over 30 years and is described in the script as a guy who...

With the Cannes Film Festival officially closed, the next big festival on any cinephile’s calendar is the Venice Film Festival.
If there is one thing that the Cannes Film Festival saw as a critique, it was the lack of this year’s biggest films. Ranging from Terrence Malick’s The Tree Of Life, to Sofia Coppola’s upcoming film, Somewhere, the year’s most prestigious festival was without many of the year’s most prestigious films.
However, that may not be the case for Venice.
Screen Daily came up with a dream list of films which while not being able to make Cannes, could very well premiere at Venice (via The Playlist). The Tree of Life is on that list, as is Somewhere, as both are nearly 100% complete. Tree was reportedly going to show at Cannes, but was pulled last minute, as Malick said the film was only “97% complete,...

Yep, this about as crazy as they come, but apparently it's happening. The always reliable Pajiba is reporting that Phoenix Pictures (Zodiac, Shutter Island, Black Swan) is developing a live-action feature film based on the Dilbert comics, introduced in 1989 created by Scott Adams. And apparently they've got the director of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, License to Wed, and He's Just Not That Into You - Ken Kwapis - attached to direct. Yes, this will probably be just a feature version of "The Office" and it'll probably end up being pretty awful, mainly because I just can't see Kwapis creating a masterpiece out of Dilbert (can you?). Anyway, here's the interesting Hollywood side of all of this. Kwapis has actually directed some 12 episodes of NBC's "The Office" and is friends with John Krasinski, because he recently cast him in his upcoming whale drama Everybody Loves Whales. So, like ...

For an episode that many fans allegedly disliked, “Across The Sea” has inspired some of the most spirited and thought-provoking commentary I’ve ever seen from Lost fandom. I’m not the first to make this observation. Myles McNutt has posted a directory of “Across The Sea” blogging on his (highly recommended) Cultural Learnings website, and I encourage you to click over there and check it out after I’m done talking your ear off about all things Jacob. (To the mix of voices, I would also add our own Ken Tucker, who deemed “Across The Sea” a “stinker.”) One...

more from the Nashville Film Festival
As an addendum to the "We Can't Wait: True Grit" post, I thought I'd share a few notes from my favorite special event at the 2010 Nashville Film Festival "Carter Burwell: One on One". Throughout the event last night, acclaimed film composer Carter Burwell spoke frequently about his work with the Coen Bros. He counts Miller's Crossing (1990) as his favorite working experience ever because he was given three months rather than the common three to six week time frame. When asked for a favorite score from his own career he offered up only "I like Fargo but I don't really have favorites."
The audience at the well attended event seemed especially intrigued by any hints as to what the soundscape for the upcoming True Grit (2010) might sound like.
"We don't always see eye to eye." Burwell noted when discussing his 14th collaboration with Joel and Ethan Coen.

Nathaniel: And so we come to the top film in our List O' Impatience called "We Can't Wait: Summer and Beyond" There's still neither trailer nor official stills. With Malick, you always have to wait. Even when you feel you can't.
The Tree of Life
Directed by Terrence Malick
Starring Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain and Fiona Shaw (in the 1950s) Sean Penn and Joanna Going (in present day)
Synopsis (don't read if you don't wanna know the very basic template) Malick has described the film as a "mystical epic". There's rumored to be a section of the film about prehistoric Earth. But most of what we know is that it's a story in two main parts. First, a story about the eldest boy in a young family in the 1950s (Brad Pitt is the father) and the loss of innocence. The second part is about the boy as a disillusioned...

Robert here with Ja and Dave, discussing what's sure to be the year's most anticipated threequel.
Toy Story 3Directed by: Lee Unkrich
Starring: the voices of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Wallace Shawn, Don Rickles, Whoopi Goldberg, Michael Keaton and John Ratzenberger
Synopsis: Everyone's favorite gang of toys finds their world turned upside down when their owner, the college-bound Andy dumps them in a day care.
Brought to you by: Disney/Pixar
Expected release date: June 18, 2010
Robert: Immediately that trailer gets me. I think it's the Randy Newman song that transports me back to the Toy Story world without missing a beat. I find myself joining in with the chorus of "Andy's going to college!" My how time has passed, Andy's going to college already (yes, that's me getting sentimental about a tertiary character in a movie from a decade ago). Yet there are plenty of reasons to be dubious.

Robert here with Ja and Dave, continuing the We Can't Wait: Summer and Beyond discussion. Now we come to something of a mystery.
InceptionDirected by: Christopher Nolan
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ken Watanabe, Michael Caine and Tom Hardy
Synopsis: An agent possesses the technology to enter people's minds, discovering their deepest secrets and using them for profit. But the mind is a dangerous place where reality is unstable. That's about all the info that the very secretive Nolan and his team are volunteering.
Brought to you by: Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros.
Expected release date: July 16, 2010
Robert: I can't imagine not being game for any new Nolan film (or DiCaprio film for that matter), but I wonder if the mystery surrounding this one is for the best? I feel like this might have been even higher on my list if I had a better grasp on what it was.

Starring: Nicole Kidman, Aaron Eckhart, Dianne Weist, Sandra Oh, Tammy Blanchard
Synopsis: Life for a happy couple (Kidman and Eckhart) is turned upside down after their young son dies in an accident.
Brought to you by: Fox Searchlight Pictures
Expected release date: Tba
Jose: Proving why she's the most constantly adventurous working actress, Nicole Kidman is back with one of her two big back to back projects (if The Danish Girl ever starts shooting of course...) which has her play a character that won Cynthia Nixon a Tony during the play's Broadway run.
Do you think this means Oscar attention for Nic or will it be her own Proof?
Craig: If truth be told, I would've actually liked to have seen Cynthia Nixon do it.

Just when you thought Michael Jackson couldn't get weirder, the late King of Pop is now the new King of Pop. The AP reports the Estate of Michael Jackson has signed "the biggest recording deal in history: a $200 million guaranteed contract with Sony Music Entertainment (Sne) for 10 projects over seven years." Next thing you know, TMZ will be reporting Jackson's moon walk... on the moon. This is probably a smart deal for Sony. Like the Beatles, Elvis, and any other rare transcendental artists, the demand for Jackson's music will continue in perpetuity across the generations. Now all we need are some creative financial engineers to securitize the future revenue stream, chop it into tranches of hits and filler, and voila: we may have another Black Swan bubble. Will you be buying Michael's "new" albums? Let us know in the comments below......

Overall, the list is about fifty/fifty in world cinema versus U.S. product, but I didn't think that there'd be such a significant number of biopics, which just goes to prove that real people, from 19th century slave Saartjie Bartman (Black Venus) to a martial arts instructor (The Grand Master) to renowned terrorists (Carlos the Jackal) are of interest cinematically speaking. When you include the Joaquin Phoenix mockumentary, the number of biopic items comes in at a whopping dozen count - the exact same total for book to film adaptations which also totals a firm twelve.

St. Trinian's II: The Legend of Fritton's Gold
Opens: 2010
Cast: Colin Firth, Rupert Everett, David Tennant, Gemma Arterton, Talulah Riley
Director: Oliver Parker, Barnaby Thompson
Summary: A rollercoaster-style treasure hunt for the legendary Fritton’s Gold ensues as the feisty and ever-resourceful schoolgirls of St Trinian’s face their most fearsome establishment rivals yet - the villainous Pomfrey and his sidekicks from the women-hating secret society known as AD1.
Analysis: While it didn't travel much beyond the UK, 2007's reboot of the "St Trinian's" franchise nearly doubled its £7 million production budget in sales in the UK alone - making it one of the top grossing independent British films of the past decade. Reviews were decidedly mixed but generally pretty weak at the time, so the greenlighting of a sequel surprised quite a few.

Mother and Child

Summary: A tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives while a young African-Americn woman deals with an unwanted pregnancy and the adoption process.
Analysis: Scoring rave reviews in Toronto, the $7 million latest effort of Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her") once again shows off his skill at weaving multiple narratives together in clever and unexpected ways. At its heart it's an emotional family drama, but Garcia excels with his female characters which makes the involvement of Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and especially Annette Benning thrilling.

Case 39

What? A new study of more than 900 films released between 2001 and 2005 revealed that movies featuring overt sexuality and/or nudity suffered adverse box-office effects, particularly in the international marketplace. "I have yet to see a way of crunching the numbers where sex/nudity has a positive relationship with box office, even controlling for MPAA rating or budget," said one of the co-authors, who studied net and gross receipts from the Us, UK and the world as a whole. The report also gets into such topics as female coercion and the cost-efficiency of sex scenes. It probably won't make you want to see the lesbian romps of Chloe or Black Swan any less, but there you have it. [Miller-McCune]...

After winning last year’s Oscar for Best Documentary, director James Marsh is moving onto feature films with The Vatican Tapes.
The film is a supernatural thriller (of course it is, everything is these days) that follows the events set in motion when a tape showing a botched exorcism by the Vatican is leaked. Rather than focusing on the tapes of the exorcism itself, The Vatican Tapes will center on what happens after the tapes get out.
The Vatican Tapes comes from an idea thought up by Chris Morgan and Chris Borrelli, and was then turned into a screenplay by Borrelli. It will also be the first non-documentary to Marsh’s directing credits.
Marsh’s documentaries have won the director eight different awards, as well as six other nominations. If he can transition his skill as a director from filming true life events to fiction, The Vatican Tapes could shape...

Marsh’s documentaries have won the director eight different awards, as well as six other nominations. If he can transition his skill as a director from filming true life events to fiction, The Vatican Tapes could shape...

Olivia Benford is a complex woman who's deeply in love, but struggling with the recent events of the future flash she, and everyone else on the face of this planet, saw in the new ABC series FlashForward. Olivia is played by actress Sonya Walger, who has guest starred on Lost since 2006 as Penelope Widmore, another woman deeply in love and struggling to keep that love intact. TVOvermind had the privilege to speak to Sonya Walger yesterday about her role on the show, and what we can hope to see as the mysterious series progresses at a rapid pace.
On the series, Sonya's character Olivia is in a loving marriage, but one that has been strained due to her FBI husband's alcoholism. He's clean now (for seven years) but the struggle that they've endured is evident from the opening moments of the pilot. However, it becomes very clear very fast that...

We've been a bit neglectful so far this fall season with our television coverage, particularly when it comes to analyses of episodes week to week. So we're going to do our darnedest to correct that oversight, starting right here, right now, with a look back at last week.
After careful consideration, we began to realize that detailed reviews of every episode of every major series, every week, was just too unwieldy—we haven't the manpower, and we doubt you have the patience to sift through long deliberations about the lives of your favorite characters on your favorite shows. We'll still do more detailed reviews every once in a while, but expect analyses of partial seasons more often than individual episodes.
So what's the alternative? Mini recaps/reviews. Think of them as Bk Burger Shots for your pop culture soul.
Ok, that's a wee bit disgusting. Think of them as "reviews you can use,...

Dominic Monaghan debuted on FlashForward this week, in perhaps the coolest character introduction in TV history.
Before we saw him, though, viewers were treated to an episode that included Olivia's forced acceptance of the blackouts as valid; and Demetri's admission to Mark that he was scheduled to be murdered in March.
How did the events in "Black Swan" move things forward? Read our complete episode recap to find out!

(S01E04) Any time we can go back and look at the blackout itself, I'm interested. But the use of an idyllic park scene and Björk's "It's Oh So Quiet" created an almost peaceful panorama -- until a bus drove into the lake, nearly missing someone lying nearby. Throughout the entire opening sequence, though, the scenes of serenity and death melded flawlessly with the song.
It was a great opening reminder of the event that put the entire series into motion, as well as an introduction to Ned. Ned is Dr. Benford's patient this week, who helps her come to terms with her own feelings about the flashforwards. He's also the calmest and most collected guy you could ever meet. But there's a reason for that.
What might be the most important thing for some people still on the fence about this show, Dominic Monaghan (Lost) finally showed up this week.

Episode Title: "Black Swan"
Written by: Lisa Zwerling and Scott M. Gimple
The Story: Agents Mark Benford (Joseph Fiennes) and Demetri Noh (John Cho) revisit an old lead in captured terror suspect Alda Hertzog (Rachel Roberts). Meanwhile, Mark's wife Olivia (Sonya Walger) and fellow surgeon Bryce (Zachary Knighton) have a nearly fatal disagreement over how to treat a patient based on his flash-forward.
The Most Profound Question Of All: Noh is destined to be murdered, but Benford believes he can prevent it. Bryce believes that his patient has a medical condition foretold by his flash-forward, but Olivia thinks that's ridiculous. Only one side of the argument can ultimately be right — either these flash-forwards are inevitable, or the future can be prevented. The most profound question of all isn't why the blackout happened, as Alda suggests, but whether or not the flash-forwards can be stopped. Do they have to happen just because they were foreseen?...

Fox has renewed The Cleveland Show for nine more episodes—of its second season. Due to animation production demands, Cleveland already had a full first season order and a 13-episode second year Before it premiered to impressive ratings. Now, Fox has made that a full second year, guaranteeing The Cleveland Show at least a 44-episode run.
Meanwhile at NBC, Heroes is two-thirds through production of its 18-episode fourth season. Its unimpressive ratings certainly point to that being all. On the other hand, so many things Aren’T working on NBC, that maybe Heroes will survive as one of the network’s Least worries.
Fox has cut its 13-episode order for Past Life, basically Cold Case with reincarnation elements. There will now be just seven episodes of the mid-season replacement.
Thursday and Friday continue to be The genre nights on television.

So far we've been getting clues and anonymous tips to the mystery of Flash Forward, but they still aren't enough. What's bothering us all is the inconsistencies of what the characters say they saw. One can be alive in someone's vision and dead in their own, like Demetri's (John Cho) and his girlfriend's.
On tonight's episode of Flash Forward, titled "Black Swan," the visions take their toll on the relationships of people. Everyone's struggling to believe or deny what they've witnessed during the blackout, which would definitely lead to chaotic consequences.

Since the first episode of FlashForward, viewers have been wondering about the future of Olivia and husband Mark; versus the future of Olivia and Lloyd, the man she saw herself with in the future.
On October 29, we'll get some answers, as Lloyd knocks on the door of the married couple.
“Mark’s not pleased to see Lloyd,” Jack Davenport, who plays the latter, told TV Guide Magazine; adding that his character arrives with autistic son Dylan, who immediately recognizes the house and the Benford's daughter.
As you might expect, "it’s a weird territory,” said Joseph Fiennes (Mark). He said:
“Lloyd and Mark can’t condemn each other at this stage for what hasn’t yet happened. Plus, you risk possibly manifesting the (infidelity) outcome as a self-fulfilling prophecy.”

There's a new sneak peek to "FlashForward" episode "Black Swan" which is airing this Thursday, October 15. The third clip from the episode is focusing on Dr. Olivia Benford's conversation with Dr. Bryce Varley. Olivia struggles to accept Bryce's suggestion that a patient's flashforward holds the key to a correct diagnosis and treatment.
Prior to the release of this one, there were two others posted on ABC.com. Both of them are about Demetri and the mystery of why he did not get a vision while anybody else did during the global blackout. Knowing that he would be murdered with three shots to the chest, Demetri is going rampant at drug dealers.
Mark is also helping him investigate the situation by questioning Nicole who returns to work as his and Olivia's daughter's baby-sitter and discloses her shocking future vision involving a murder.

Now that FlashForward has been officially expanded to a full first season fans can focus on the mystery at hand – and this week's episode, "Black Swan", looks like it has the potential to be explosive. The meaning behind that mysterious use of italics is just ahead.
It looks like Mark and Demitri have their hands on a particularly nasty perp. Why could this young man be stockpiling uranium? Is there a nuclear aspect to the event that caused the FlashForward, or does this nasty have something dirtier in mind? All of that and two more tantalizing tidbits below – including a clip with the so-far sadly underused Zachary Knighton. Black Swan airs Thursday, October 15th at 8:00pm/est on ABC.

The reason why Demetri did not get a vision of his future while the others did during the global blackout has started to come into sense with Nhadra Udaya telling him a specific date. In the preview for the next "FlashForward" episode, Nhadra said March 15, 2010 and Demetri later told Mark that he is not just gonna die, but murdered.
In "Black Swan", Demetri accuses Mark of waiting for the future he saw in his flashforward to come true without incident, while Mark feels Demetri is letting his fear of what he witnessed envelop his life. Olivia struggles to accept Bryce's suggestion that a patient's flashforward holds the key to a correct diagnosis and treatment.
Meanwhile, Nicole returns to work as Mark and Olivia's daughter's baby-sitter, and discloses her shocking future vision involving a murder. "Black Swan" airs Thursday, October 15.

Unfortunately this is not another post to add in another chick to the hot lady touching fest that is Black Swan. There is however some interesting news from James Woods on a movie he has teamed up with Kristen Stewart on. Now, I know there is not a lot of love for Kristen (She's not really that bad). She plays a really annoying character in Twilight, she often stammers too much, and she's playing Joan Jett in the Runaways movie. Woods does not share this view of the mousy brunette though....

I hope these pictures aren't any indicator of how the how the actual episodes will be. I've managed to get my hands on the promo photos for the third and fourth episodes of FlashForward, entitled "137 Sekunden" and "Black Swan," respectively. There's not much meat for you spoiler-lovers to dig into, but no worries — tomorrow night's premiere will wash away all your doubts. Here's the synopsis for episode 1.04, "Black Swan," and promo pictures for both episodes are below.

While everyone knows Austin as the "Live Music Capital of the World" and for its SXSW festival, few people know this: Just down the road in San Antonio, independent film is Big, and there are indie filmmakers everywhere putting out quality entertainment for those who know where to look. This past weekend, August 27-30, the second annual Horrific Film Fest showcased a lot of that talent and allowed some of those filmmakers to meet a few horror movie icons and learn a few things from them as well.
Here's a brief rundown of what went on: Thursday night the festival kicked off at 6pm with live local bands in a show that ran until midnight. Headlining the show were Cursor, Ashley Ford, and the Saturday Night Shockers. The whole thing was emceed by Ari "First Jason" Lehman. Midnight rolled around, and San Antonio's After Dark Paranormal Research took a few...

Three-time U.S. Figure Skating Champion and 2006 Olympian Johnny Weir will be getting the reality show treatment thanks to the Sundance Channel, who will be all up in his business as he prepares for his final Olympics. From the press release:
Be Good Johnny Weir is a new series of 8 episodes, with cameras following Johnny, along with his coach, friends, choreographers, costumer, and skating manager mom Patti Weir through the ups and downs of his career. Weir is working toward what will be his last Winter Olympics in February 2010.
Well, this should be interesting. As eccentric and flamboyant as Johnny has been on the ice, he's always been guarded when it comes to his private life. When it comes to "the question", this is what Johnny has to say:
"I don't feel the need to express my sexual being because it's not part of my sport and it's private." "I...

In April, dozens of scripted shows will return to the broadcast networks. Thank goodness! Though I've already posted details on the returns of "The Office" (here and here) "30 Rock," "Ugly Betty" and "House," I thought I'd collect all the information I have in one place.
First, here's a chronological list of return dates (to see the return dates sorted by network, go here).
Second, for those who want more than just return dates, I've got details on what will happen on many shows, in addition to the ones mentioned above, on the second half of this item.
If you don’t spot a favorite show on either list, by the way, be aware that some programs aren’t returning until fall, and the fate of several others has not been officially announced yet. There's more info on what's returning in the fall here.
