Worth taking a chance on
TheLittleSongbird23 March 2021
Am very glad about giving 'Call Me Claus' a chance. Expectations were mixed. Despite loving Christmas, many festive films and specials and liking Whoopi Goldberg and especially Nigel Hawthorne (the latter sadly in his last film) as actors, the advertising didn't look great and it did sound like pretty cheap and cheesy. There have been numerous instances where films don't look great from how it's advertised but manage to be good and victims of bad marketing (my exact experience with 'Lilo and Stitch' for example).

'Call Me Claus' is a long way from perfect, not one of the best Christmas films and it's not my definition of great. It was though a lot better than expected and an example of a film to not judge by its marketing, very like not judging a book by its cover. Goldberg is not at her best here, but the film does serve as a poignant reminder of how great an actor Hawthorne was and it is a not half bad last film for him. Although flawed, 'Call Me Claus' struck me as quite decent.

There are many good things here. The best thing about 'Call Me Claus' is Hawthorne, who is perfect in the title role. Playing it with a twinkling charm, gently humorous comic timing, a jovial air and poignancy. The supporting cast all do well if never on Hawthorne's level. The script has genuinely amusing and never crude or juvenile humour, truly moving pathos without going over the top on the sappiness and is also surprisingly relevant. The cynicism never gets mean-spirited. The characters didn't come over as dull, nor did they come over as annoying.

Story is very charming, warm-hearted and goes at a pace that doesn't feel routine or sluggish. The chemistry between the cast comes over as warm and natural. The music gives a nice festive cheer and at least fits.

Goldberg though left me a bit mixed. She has moments of sass but there are instances where she did seem to be mailing it in or holding back. 'Call Me Claus' does look as though it was made on a limited budget in a short period of time, with production values that could easily pass for a film made ten years or so prior.

Do think as well that the ending does require a number of attempts of swallowing, which is not easy to do for one that is rather unrealistic and too neat.

In conclusion, not bad at all and did find a lot to like about it. 6/10

Call Me Claus
Prismark1026 November 2019
Nick (Nigel Hawthorne) is nearing the end of his 200 year term as Santa Claus and needs to find his successor. Failure to do so will bring calamity such as the melting of the North pole ice cap.

Nick hopes to recruit Lucy Cullins (Whoopi Goldberg) someone who was a true believe in the spirit of Christmas as a young girl. However her father died in the Vietnam war soon after she sat on Nick's lap.

Now the grown up Lucy is a cynical grinch working for a shopping channel. Nick applies to be the Santa salesman for the shopping channel in the run up to Christmas, so he can get near Lucy an persuade her to take on his job.

The plot about finding a replacement Santa is a well worn one in these days of mass produced Christmas movies. This is indistinguishable for those types of quickly made and low budget films apart from having a better calibre cast.

Despite being made for cable back in 2001, Call Me Claus is not that funny or appealing. It actually wastes the talents of an Oscar winner and Oscar nominee.

This was Nigel Hawthorne's last film role. At least he got to play a sweet natured part, a far cry from his mean and cynical Sir Humphrey in Yes Minister.

The Whoopi Claus
wes-connors5 December 2013
Because she had true Christmas spirit as a young lass, "Shop-A-Lot" TV producer/pitch-woman Whoopi Goldberg (as Lucy Cullins) is chosen to be the world's new Santa Claus. This decision was made (in a 1965 flashback) by traditional roly-poly red-suited Nigel Hawthorne (as Nick). Being "Santa Claus" is revealed to be a 200-year job. If the presently grow-up and grumpy Ms. Goldberg can't get her girlish Christmas groove back, Earth will suffer a massive flood. Call her Scrooge. For Goldberg's Los Angeles-based home-shopping channel, she hires Mr. Hawthorne as a seasonal sales-marketing Santa and he tries to win her over. For a TV movie, "Call Me Claus" is nicely produced. This was the last role for Hawthorne, who performs memorably. The soundtrack music (by Van Dyke Parks) pleasantly moves it along. Having a woman take over the role of Santa Claus is an interesting and welcome premise, but the story really doesn't work. As it's destined to get lost in future years, we won't have to explain to millions of confused young children how Whoopi lost the job.

Beautiful....!
kissshot851 December 2003
I think it should've been released into cinemas rather than made for TV...instead, this year - we got Elf! What's with that?

Although this film is rather slow paced, it's funny in all the right places and without trying too hard.

A heartwarming (sometimes heart wrenching) story that includes a fantastic cast. Whoopi Goldberg (great as ever in her role as Lucy Cullins), Nigel Hawthorne (as the most convincing Santa Claus I have ever had the honour of seeing in a movie) and Victor Garber (in a wickedly comical role!).

I watched it for the first time this morning and I want to watch it again and again and again!

Call Me Claus

Warning: Spoilers
I noticed this TV movie listed as being rated three stars, and starring one of my favourite African American actresses, and a good sounding actor playing the lovable yuletide hero, so I decided to watch. Basically when she was a little girl, Lucy Cullins had a big belief in the magic of Christmas, and sitting on the lap of a Santa Claus (Nigel Hawthorne) she wears his hat which glows and proves he is the chosen one to have Christmas spirit. While there she also asked as a Christmas present for her father, fighting in Vietnam, to return home, but instead he is brought home in a coffin. Years later, Lucy (Whoopi Goldberg, also producing) is grown up and is the network executive and producer of the home consumer "Shop-A-Lot" Channel, with a grumpy attitude with no real Christmas spirit and not paying much attention to her family. Her boss Cameron (Brian Stokes Mitchell) wants to boost the sales for the shopping channel during the holiday season approaching, so he wants to hire a Santa Claus to advertise the festive merchandise, so auditions are held with no successful applicants. Then they spot the man calling himself Nick (still Hawthorne), with a jolly attitude, a love for Christmas, and a real heartwarming charm, so he is hired. Within minutes of his debut on the channel, he is an instant hit helping to bring in big numbers of sales, more than any of the other networks, but he has another agenda than just making money. Nick has an awkward friendship with Lucy, and he tries to convince her that he is not only the same Santa she saw in the mall years ago, but that he is the real Santa, and he has an important job for her. After convincing her he really is Santa Claus with a trip to the North Pole and the workshop with all the elves, Mrs. Claus, the reindeer and the sleigh, Lucy is then told that she is destined to be the next Santa. Nick explains that every Santa since the 2nd Century reigns as the man that delivers presents worldwide (with the help of the space time continuum) for 200 years until another person with Christmas spirit is found, and she is that person. If Lucy doesn't put on his hat once again, embrace the spirit of Christmas and become the new Santa Claus, there will come the "Or Else Factor", where the giant flood Noah's Ark went through will happen again. She is unconvinced and is made to believe everything was a dream to go back to normal, and Nick makes his final broadcast on the shopping channel, Christmas Eve, and leaving to go back to the North Pole he can only leave a note to say "it's not too late". Realising her boss was only interested in making money and wanted to "oen Christmas", Lucy runs home and finds the note left by Nick, and that is when she decides to try the Santa hat on and create the glow of the Christmas spirit again. She has now truly become the new Santa Claus, she is picked up by Nick and main elf Ralph (Taylor Negron) to be transformed into a Santa figure with the red suit and whitened hair, and of course being Christmas Eve start delivering all the presents. After a few deliveries they make a pit stop so Lucy can see her niece perform in the choir with a solo on stage, make her peace with her mother (Melody Garrett) and brother Dwayne (White Chicks' Frankie R. Faison), and with Nick still in tow flying away as as Santa. Also starring Titanic's Victor Garber as Taylor and Total Recall's Robert Costanzo as Teamster Santa. Goldberg with her sharp-tongued schtick makes her a different approach to an originally Scrooge like character transformed by Christmas cheer, and Hawthorne is a perfect choice as Santa Claus with his Christmassy charm and good nature. Being made for TV I was worried it would be very cheesy with cheap special effects and corny performances, but actually it works really well, it does admittedly have a hard to swallow final few minutes, but overall, a nice seasonal comedy. Worth watching!

Good entertainment to be watched several times
nicholas.rhodes23 December 2005
I acquired this one on a DVD from the USA, the only place its available. I found the film most entertaining, thanks to the performances of Whoopi Goldberg and Nigel Hawthorn whom I had known from the BBC series Yes Minister. Indeed I was distressed to learn that he had died whilst I was in the course of reading other comments about this film. Whoopi Goldberg, I knew and loved in Ghost, Jumpin' Jack Flash and the Sister Act movies.

The storyline here is quite original, a little slow to get off the ground but that Christmas magic is there and I think we all, old and young, like films where Father Xmases, sleighs and reindeers are involved, especially if the reindeers have shiny/luminous noses.

I was most touched by the flashback to Whoopi's childhood where she had asked the same Father Xmas to bring her Daddy back, this was probably the most emotional part of the film. The rest was more lighthearted and the only aspect I did not like was the over commercialisation of Xmas where you have to sell sell and sell more ! However the magic of the film makes up for the rest of this. It's a nice DVD to have at home and to put on a couple of times a year !

Ho-ho-hum
newleaf27 December 2011
Like many made-for-TV Christmas movies, you'll be able to figure out the entire plot within the first five minutes, and you'll know exactly how it's going to end.

Whoopi Goldberg stars, but even though she seems to be just going through the motions, I imagine the movie would have been worse with a lesser actress in the lead role. Nigel Hawthorne, portraying Santa Claus, is by far the brightest spot in the movie.

If you've seen more than a handful of other Christmas movies, you've seen all of this before. Think "The Santa Clause" with Whoopi Goldberg instead of Tim Allen, and you're 90% of the way there.

But it's Christmas, after all. I imagine there are worse things you could do during the holidays.

You can tell this story was re-written and overwritten
Christmas-Reviewer16 April 2019
Review Date 4/16/2019

I Have Reviewed OVER 500 "Christmas Films and Specials". Please BEWARE Of films and specials with just one review! For instance When "It's a POSITIVE" chances are that the reviewer was involved with the production. "If its Negative" then they may have a grudge against the film for whatever reason. I am fare about these films.

The story is about Lucy Cullins, a successful but cranky producer at a home shopping network, hires an actor named Nick to play Santa Claus on the network she gets more than she bargained for..

This story doesn't focus on what i truly wants to be. A film about the commercialism of "Christmas" or a family comedy about a woman not believing that she is to be the next "Santa Claus". It could have been both. I think had this been given an extra 1/2 the filmmakers might of had something special. Given it was a tv-m they were forced to make a film a certain length to fit a 2 hour times lot.

The acting is fine but this is a film that is quit forgettable. After a nights sleep most adults will forget that they even saw film

It's pretty dated now
Lew77710 December 2018
Only watched this recently, over 17 years since it's release, and boy is the CGI so dated ! Some of the sets are poor and the storyline is obvious from the start ie to find a new Santa before elf armageddon ! Whoopi plays an ok role as the grumpy Shopping Channel exec, tasked with bringing in the cash over Christmas period. However, the standout role is that of Nigel Hawthorne as Santa, who plays the poignant and comedic lines with equal aplomb. If I'd seen this when it first came out, I'd probably given a higher mark even though it's a poor The Santa Clause plotline.

Different, tight and adult script - Hawthorne is excellent. Goldberg isn't
iranu-741951 December 2019
Dated film now - but notable for a (somewhat overwritten) relevant , often humorous and grown-up script. Sets are not overly cheap and the pace moves along. Moral of the film is the invasion of consumerism into everything. Actor Hawthorne does a very professional job - shame he's maybe too old at this point. The let down (as usual) is Goldberg - who's spent 80% of her career phoning-in a performance and delivering a scene with the one aim of receiving the cheque for it. Utterly surprised she is ever employed as an actor.

Call Me Clause is an average addition to the Christmas genre, worth a single viewing but lacking in rewatch value
kevin_robbins13 December 2023
I recently viewed Call Me Clause (2001) on Tubi. The storyline centers around a television producer who, despite her unpleasant demeanor towards colleagues and family, rapidly climbs the career ladder. While organizing a television special, she accidentally hires the real Santa Claus to play himself on the show. His spontaneous acts of kindness cause frustration for our main character, leading to the question: Can Santa help her lighten up and potentially rebuild some of her damaged relationships?

This picture is directed by Peter Werner (The Substitute Wife) and stars Whoopi Goldberg (The Color Purple), Nigel Hawthorne (Demolition Man), Victor Garber (Argo), Taylor Negron (Nothing but Trouble) and Frankie Faison (Coming to America).

The storyline resonates like a Scrooge tale with Santa playing all three ghosts, adhering to a somewhat cliché Christmas narrative. The performances are authentic yet average, and the family elements feel forced at times. The Santa Clause ending, with the peculiar hat and fake hair, is a bit odd, and the overall outfit could have been better executed. The conclusion is cliché and predictable.

In conclusion, Call Me Clause is an average addition to the Christmas genre, worth a single viewing but lacking in rewatch value. I would score it a 4/10.

Wonderful movie and Nigel Hawthorne is adorable in sadly his final film role
BigWhiskers14 October 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I loved this movie and of course I had and still have a major thing for the late Nigel Hawthorne who is so charming and handsome even at 72 in this film. His portrayal of Santa Claus is so genuine and heartfelt , you really just want to hug him. The plot of him looking for someone to replace him as the new Santa is cute. He finds Whoopi Goldberg and he must convince her that she is the one. . I'm shocked that this movie did not get a theatrical release ,while a movie as awful as ELF with the abysmal Will Ferrell did. It's kind of sad to know that Nigel Hawthorne had been fighting cancer for months and still did this movie as sick as he was. Without Hawthorne this movie wouldn't have been worth watching.

He pushed to promote it and get it released and then he sadly passed away the day after Xmas that year. Wonderful movie and should be given a re-release at Xmas time in theaters.

A witty, funny, and of course heart-warming coming of age Christmas tale (contains spoilers)
coverme616 December 2001
Warning: Spoilers
CALL ME CLAUS is a good holiday movie that pretty much is a combination of 4 classic Christmas movies: A MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET, IT'S A

WONDERFUL LIFE, THE SANTA CLAUSE, and A CHRISTMAS CAROL. It concerns the plight of the real Santa Claus (Nigel Hawthorne) trying to find a replacement for himself after 200 years of delivering gifts to kids every Christmas. He finds her, in the form of a cranky home shopping network executive named Lucy (a wonderfully sarcastic Whoopi Goldberg). Lucy is understandably confused when St. Nick asks her to be the next real Santa. Though the premise is a bit far-fetched (it's a Christmas movie, so it's ok for it to be wacky!), the best highlight for this little gem of a movie are the performances. Whoopi Goldberg is terrific as Lucy, and Nigel Hawthorne is delightful as he portrays yet another Santa Claus who proclaims that he is the real McCoy (and he IS!).

Hollywood producers who make Christmas movies definitely need an elf intervention.
mark.waltz24 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I am that bah humbug guy when it comes to watching most Christmas movies made after 1990. Something about them seems forced, especially since the characters are not likeable and their agenda is questionable. However in the case of this TV movie, I was immediately warmed over especially by the presence of Tinashe as the little girl looking forward to her father coming home for Christmas from Vietnam and the tragic circumstances that prevent that. Melody Garrett is truly touching as the mother who must break the bad news. I wish there had been more of her in the post flashback sequences.

Tinashe goes from heartbroken little girl to be cynical TV shopping network producer Whoopi Goldberg whose anger over the memory of that Christmas season has left her saying bah humbug to everything. But she becomes the desired replacement by the aging Santa (Nigel Hawthorne) who wants to retire. What he sees in the hard-boiled Whoopie is as invisible as his reindeer at first, but a sweet script has you liking her in spite of all that. Will Santa's magic turn this Ebbie Scrooge into the queen of ho ho ho?

Broadway favorites Victor Garber and Brian Stokes Mitchell are hysterically funny as Goldberg's over-the-top business cohorts, and Hawthorne is very poignant as Saint Nick whose two centuries are up. This is a delightful surprise that takes the cynical modern era of materialism and adds magic to it (finally!), giving me holiday hope that there are more hidden gems out there to bring me back to the Christmas spirit and not always have to go back to the old Christmas standards from the 1930's and 40's. Goldberg is always a delight, and it's nice to see her character turn around. There are so many funny moments in this that I don't even want to spoil them for the viewer.

Before Anna Kendrick's Noelle there was Whoopi Goldberg as Santa
lisafordeay9 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Call Me Claus is a 2001 festive Made For TV Comedy starring Whoopi Goldberg,Victor Garbor and Nigel Hawthrone. Directed by Peter Werner, the story is about an African American naked Lucy Cullins(Goldberg)who works at a TV station. Things take a turn when a mysterious man(Hawthorne)shows up at her workplace claiming to be Santa Claus, and is looking for a replacement. Will Lucy be the next Santa Clause?.

Overall I enjoyed this film. It was nice seeing Whoopi Goldberg reuniting with Victor Garbor again having teamed up in Rodger and Hamersteins Cinderella(1997) as they played husband and wife in that film(the King and queen).

If you enjoyed Noelle then you'll like this film.

Call me entertained.
adamjohns-4257514 December 2020
When I first turned this film on I thought "Here's a film that's going to get a bad review", but actually as it progressed I found I quite liked the silliness of it all and realised that it is just the right amount of daft. It bears a likeness to "Miracle On 34th Street" in some respects and "The Santa Clause" in others, with a little bit of "A Christmas Carol" for good measure thrown in and it's funny and charming.

Whoopi is not expecting Saint Nick, who is superbly played by Nigel Hawthorne, to turn up and try to recruit her, but that's what happens. With the help of his really creepy head elf, Ralph, Nick gets work on Whoopi's TV show and the merriment ensues.

By the end of the film I was really feeling a bit of a glow and I didn't touch the port until afterwards I swear!

Slow moving but good

The movie starts out slowly, but, gently evolves into a tale of overcoming past pain and disappointment. As with most Christmas stories the premise is sort of limited but has a great ending. Destined to become a classic, in my humble opinion.

It's not the worst Christmas film
taylorjan-639625 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Eight stars as although its the usual story; bad tempered person who hates Christmas for personal reasons blah blah blah, there are some laugh out loud moments. Unfortunately the laughs are few and far between and the film could have been so much better with some original aspects to the story, instead of incorporating others into it.

Whoopi Cushion is not the best actress and at one point her performance is pretty cringe worthy.

There are some feel good moments and I had a few tears in my eyes, but its a story told over and over again and we know the outcome. Loved most of the film, the shopping channel's take on Christmas was brilliant.

Hated the fact the makers couldn't spell the niece's name properly (Ieesha, for Ayesha - what!) and her awful rendition of Oh Holy Night (hear my vocal exercises as I sing!) totally spoilt it. I've added a spoiler alert to this review but we know the outcome as soon as the niece says 'oh auntie you must come to the church Christmas eve I'm singing solo'

Call Me Claus is an excellent movie!Whoopi Goldberg is so cool! She is an excellent actor. I have to say this... You know the little girl who calls Nigel Hawthorne (Santa)? That's me! And I'm not joking either. I remember recording my voice for that! It was so fun! I was like six. Check back soon under cast and crew; Brian Bird (my dad) will add me on after he completes the Last Sin Eater (AWESOME MOVIE). Anyway, back to Call Me Claus... The first time I watched it, I cried because I was so touched. All of my classes have seen the movie (I brought it in) and they all thought it was AMAZING!!! Oh yeah... Call Me Claus was Nigel Hawthorne's last movie... :( Bummer, huh?
