Monty Don's Recurring Nightmare
Bezenby18 December 2016
Man, I'd love to see a widescreen, cleaned up version of this baby! Martial arse mixed with extreme gore, non-stop action and hilarious dubbing? What's not to like (aside from all the crap involving snakes that seems to plague films from that neck of the woods).

Story? Peeps in Indonesia must take internal politics really seriously, because this guy has nicked some magic seeds off his Uncle that when eaten with food cause the victim to explode with plant life, gory style. This involves the actor's head sitting on some surface while twigs are pushed through a rubber body, but it also works really well as this is one of those film that, when someone is wounded, blood sprays from a hose (like Shogun Assassin!).

So, this guy is going to extreme lengths to be mayor, but his victims relatives are all arse-kicking heroes. Cue many fights with Barry Prima and the lady whose father was first to eat the seeds. At first I was put off by the bad transfer but around the half hour mark the film kicked into high gear and much action ensued.

You also get legs cuts off (I'm sure the severed limb had 'I love you' written on it), people impaled on sticks, bizarre comedy and a guy with loads of snakes dumped on his head, a rape scene, and rats being dumped on a woman. Those last three bits don't make for the best viewing however.

Still, you're not going to see something like this too often! I recommend it, but would love to see a cleaned up version.

Kung-Fu meets Alien
MrsPatroni11 June 2004
Special Silencers are little red pills that will grow a tree in your stomach unless you are a shaolin monk and use them for meditation. The pills fall into the wrong hands and you can imagine the damage they will cause in the little Indonesian village... I really liked watching this obscure Indonesian movie because of its special make-up effects, its flowery, easylistening soundtrack, and the fact that it has a kung-fu fighting girl in it (not as good as Lady Whirlwind, but she tries hard). The movie combines the kung-fu craze of the 70s with the bloody horror that ruled the 80s. You have to be a lover of exploitation movies in order to enjoy it. I hope that someone is going to release the soundtrack soon.

Fun, fast-paced, action-packed, gory entertainment!
capkronos13 January 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Power-mad Gundar (Dicky Zulkarnaen) karate chops his monk grandfather and steals his "special silencers;" little orange pills which have different effects depending on who takes them. Somehow they help monks with their meditation, but they can also make the person who possesses them invincible to weapons and sharp objects. And if they're slipped into some unsuspecting person's food or drink, there's another complication - a rapidly-growing tree begins sprouting in their stomach, ripping them apart! Gundar conspires with his right-hand man Gumilar (W.D. Mochtar) and their large mob of thugs to use the pills in a plot to overthrow the mayor of the village. After successfully slipping the mayor some silencers, resulting in his death, the two learn they must also knock off his possible successors, relatives and anyone else who might get in their way, including the mayor's assistant, brother (a cop), nephew and daughter. Strolling into town on his motorcycle right as things are getting nasty is Hendar (Barry Prima), who was a classmate of the mayor's nephew Dayan, and also takes a liking to his daughter, Julia (Eva Arnaz). He teams up with the two of them to put a stop to Gundar and his cronies, and the rest is basically wall-to-wall action. In fact, our heroes barely have time to take a breath before they're jumping into their next fight scene.

Thankfully, the action scenes are well-done, elaborately staged and fun to watch, featuring lots of high kicks, punches, flips, various martial arts moves (Prima himself has a background in tae kwan do) and lots of spears, logs, pipes, nets, swords and other props brought in for a little variety. One of my favorite scenes finds Prima fighting off the bad guys while on top of and underneath a moving truck. Not only is there plenty of action, but there is also a welcome helping of the red stuff. The scenes featuring the pills at work, with tree branches popping out of stomach's and mouths, are really bloody, and the special effects themselves are surprisingly good. The good guys (and girl) are likable enough to get you in their corner, while the bad guys are adequately scummy, complete with their own torture chamber where they get to terrorize victims with rats and snakes! There's also a very catchy synthesizer score from Gatot Sudarto.

I think people into martial arts flicks and Asian horror of the period would get a real kick out of this one, but unfortunately it's a very difficult film to find. The version I saw was from a company called Delta Video out of the Netherlands, who made sure that their company name popped up on screen at least five times while I was watching this. It was English-dubbed and with Dutch subtitles, with the nudity in a scene where a virgin is raped fogged out. There's no official DVD release as of this writing, but hopefully that will change. If you can find it anywhere in the meantime, I recommend giving it a try!

Trashy Indonesian gore thriller
Leofwine_draca29 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
A typically insane Indonesian exploitation flick, SPECIAL SILENCERS has all the standard trappings of your everyday crime-cum-thriller: there's a bunch of villagers at the mercy of an evil, ambitious man; a high-kicking hero and heroine who use martial arts skills to battle the villains; and even some cheesy attempts at romance and comedy. In fact, in many ways this is a straightforward action flick from the motorbike-riding floppy-haired hero to the conniving bad guys and tortured buddies. But wait for it, here's the twist: in a sickening spin on that famous ALIEN scene, the bad guy has little pills (the special silencers of the title) which he feeds to his enemies, causing roots to bloody burst from their stomachs and instant death to ensue! Special effects are rubbery as can be but far from rubbish, and liberal sprays of bloody gore push this into horror territory time and time again.

As the wooden hero, Prima is typically athletic; he's whipped, hung upside down and ambushed by the villains over and over again. His martial arts are simple and hard-hitting and my favourite sequence sees him hiding inside a barrel, cutting the legs off baddies as he rolls along! There's another weird twist with the invincible bad guy who can only be killed with bamboo, making for a bloody climatic battle between hero and foe.

Much of the film consists of action and stunts, and they're pretty well-staged. I give the date of this movie as 1979, and, if so, it could provide an inspiration for RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, as Prima hangs underneath an enemy truck as they attempt to crush him – just like Indy and that truck in the Spielberg hit! Of course, this film might not have been made until 1981, we'll never know, so most probably it's just a rip-off. The film's heroine, Arnaz, also kicks backside all over the shop, so there's plenty of spectacle for fight fans and villains chewing scenery with relish for those who love drama. Production values are low but there's no mistaking the drive and energy which fill every frame and there's something lovable about a movie which pulls no punches and just gets on with the job. Oh yeah, did I mention the guy who falls head first into the circular saw blade?

Story of a mad man using pills that grow plants inside people as a means of taking over a town is a bloody fun evenings viewing
dbborroughs10 November 2005
This is the story of an evil man who is trying to take over a village by using every underhanded trick in the book. His main means of getting rid of a foe is to use a little red pill that will cause a rapidly growing plant to sprout from your belly and rip you apart.(The pills are suppose to be used by monks for meditation, I don't know how but thats what were told) As the mad man moves towards taking control of the town he runs up against hunky Barry Prima who more than gives him a run for his money.

Sue me, I liked this a great deal. Its got great action, an over the top story, decent special effects and a sense of just how silly it all is that makes it charming. Its a gory action horror film that simply wants to entertain, and it does in spades. The action is well done with both matinée idol Prima and his female co-star kicking major ninja butt. Its a blast and then some.

If you want a no brainer film for an evenings non-taxing viewing this is it. Just be warned that the blood flows freely, so if you're not a fan of the red stuff you may want to be ready to look away.

Absolutely worth a bag of popcorn or two.

Like H.G. Lewis Directing a Chop Sockey
jrd_733 January 2019
Am I really going to give Special Silencers an 8 out 10? Maybe I am insane, but this film entertained me more than any film I've seen in a while. Quite simply, I got eight stars worth of entertainment from the brain dead Special Silencers.

Indonesian action star Barry Prima (sort-of a poor man's David Chiang) rides a motorcycle into a village where the evil son of a monk is scheming to be village mayor (why he would want this "honor" is only vaguely explained). The villain has these capsules ("special silencers") which a henchman puts in the food or drink of whomever the villain wants dead. These pills cause plants to grow in the victim's stomach, eventually causing vines to burst out of the stomach Alien style with much cheap gore effects. The fact that the special effects are patently unconvincing adds rather than detracts from the film's charm.

Another charming aspect is the way the villain uses any excuse he can think of to drop something from above on a potential victim below, regardless of how impractical the would be murder weapon. Yet, another plus is Eva Arnaz as Julia, the mayor's daughter who looks great fighting in a skirt. Add in some icky moments with snakes and rats for junior high gross out appeal and one has a movie that is anything but boring. Now, if only someone would release a widescreen DVD of this film.

Wild and extremely entertaining.
HumanoidOfFlesh23 December 2010
"Special Silencers" are tablets that will grow bloodthirsty roots of a tree into your stomach.Once swallowed the painful death is coming.Town's mayor is killed by thugs via these dangerous magic pills. It's up to Barry Prima and Eva Arnaz to stop villains...Utterly insane and wild Indonesian horror with plenty of cheap grue.It has tons of fighting scenes which are nicely executed. The main concept of deadly tablets is extremely outlandish and the action is fast.If you like motorcycle stunts, yelling and spin-kicking,crazy gore, virginal Indonesian girls and the gore-soaked branches tearing bodies you must-see "Special Silencers".This movie is one of the biggest cinematic orgasms I had this year.9 pills out of 10.

Prime Prima!
udar5513 March 2010
Wow, more madness from Indonesian director Arizal. Not a big believer in the electoral process, baddie Gundar (Dicky Zulkarnaen) schemes to eliminate his village's mayor and family. His plan involves using magical "Special Silencer" pills he stole from his monk grandfather. If taken on an empty stomach, they give you impenetrable skin. If taken with food, the cause tree roots to burst from your stomach! The plan goes smoothly until Hendra (Barry Prima), a friend of the deceased mayor's nephew (got that?), shows up in town and falls for the mayor's daughter Julia (Eva Arnaz). This is as wild as it sounds. Prima (THE WARRIOR series) pounds plenty of skulls as a fight seems to break out every six minutes or so. There is also some fantastic dubbing, like this exchange after a henchman informs Gundar that Hendra survived an attack and impaled an underling on a tree:

Gundar: "Why didn't you bring Tonto's body back?"

Thug: "I didn't have a saw."

Gundar: "Oaf!"

The FX of the tree branches bursting out of people's stomach is very bloody and, because it is so cheaply done, rather disturbing. It reminds me of the cancer bursting from that guy in VIDEODROME. Not as action packed as Arizal's 80s efforts, but just as insane.
