Liza Anne’s Utopian is a riotously fun assertion of self-worth. One of the album’s most vibrant tracks, “Treat Me,” pairs feminist lyrics with constantly shifting instrumentation, from tactile wood blocks and shakers to dreamy electric guitar and synths. Born Elizabeth Anne Odachowski, the nonbinary singer-songwriter spends much of the song in a didactic mode, alluding to the dangers faced by women and queer people in public spaces: “If you feel like I’m talking to you, then listen/Don’t treat me like that.”
Indeed, many of the songs on Utopian serve as teachable moments for Odachowski, who offers a series of personal and political lessons throughout, some more revelatory than others. On the album’s title track, the artist proposes remaining friends with an ex, singing, “We don’t have to shine a bad light/Just because it’s changing.” Odachowski’s optimism matches the track’s bright,...

Piper Laurie, who blossomed as an actress only after extricating herself from the studio system and went on to rack up three Oscar nominations, has died. She was 91.
Laurie’s manager Marion Rosenberg confirmed the news to Variety, writing, “A beautiful human being and one of the great talents of our time.”
Laurie scored her first Oscar nomination for her work opposite Paul Newman in 1961’s classic poolhall drama “The Hustler,” in which she played an alcoholic who memorably tells Newman’s character, “Look, I’ve got troubles and I think maybe you’ve got troubles. Expressing gratitude, Rashmika said: “It’s already been 5 years? Wow. I still can’t believe it.. Thank you everyone for accepting our film and showering it with so much love.. Till date I’ve been called ‘Geetha madam’. It feels so amazing and I am extremely grateful.”
In the film, Rashmika and Vijay portrayed the characters who eventually fall in love after a series of accidents that don’t really go in their favour.

Two years ago, “Ted Lasso” premiered its second season on July 23, just 10 days after Emmy nominations were announced. It was a strategic move, of course, to keep the Apple TV+ hit top of mind for voters as Phase 2 voting approached in August. Among the show’s 20 nominations for its breakout first season were four in Best Comedy Supporting Actor, and because of that, “Ted” was not predicted to win the award at the time. “Saturday Night Live” duo Kenan Thompson and Bowen Yang occupied the top two spots in the odds until two days before the ceremony, when “Ted” star and writer Brett Goldstein surged to first place and then walked away with the trophy. Pop singer-songwriter Kesha is back with her fifth studio album, “Gag Order,” which comes three years after her last effort, 2020’s “High Road.” It was released on Friday, May 19, and the early reviews have been highly favorable, adding up to a MetaCritic score of 82 as of this writing. What do you think of the collection?
If her score holds at 82, it would outdo the 81 she received for 2017’s “Rainbow,” her comeback album following a protracted legal battle over her accusations of sexual assault against her former producer Dr. Luke (“Gag Order” is the last album she will release under contract with his label). But it must be noted that the 81 for “Rainbow” was based on 27 reviews, while only five have come in for “Gag Order” as of this writing.

For almost a decade, Kesha’s career and life have been in a state of purgatory as she’s been locked in a legal battle that has at times left her with a precarious future. On the two albums she released in the midst of endless court hearings, she put up an empowered front, searching for hope in the face of uncertainty.

Some mild Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 spoilers follow.
Once again, director and writer James Gunn has added another unique dimension to one of his films, with the perfectly curated batch of oddball tunes that populate the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 soundtrack. And yes, once again, these tracks are presented as things being listened to by the characters during the events of the film, dropped in increasingly inventive, energizing, and even heartbreaking fashion at the appropriate moments.
Sure, things have changed a little bit, with the songs no longer being tied to any specific era, and being played as an assortment of tunes that had been uploaded onto a Zune MP3 player of all things, but they still hit just as hard, loud, and unexpectedly as they ever have. So if you’re ready to groove like your favorite bunch of interstellar misfits, here’s how you can do it.

In Hollywood, it’s not uncommon for singers to try their hand at acting. From Madonna to Beyoncé, the music industry is filled with artists who have attempted to leap to the big screen. But many were skeptical when Kesha announced that she was making her acting debut.
After all, the singer is known for her high-energy performances and bold, unapologetic personality – qualities that don’t necessarily translate to the world of acting. However, the “Tik Tok” singer surprised everyone with her impressive acting skills, proving she’s much more than just a musician.

[Editor’s Note: This post contains spoilers for Ted Lasso Episode 7, “The Strings That Bind Us.”]
Ted Lasso isn’t a particularly romantic show. It certainly has its moments — most recently “Sunflowers” gave Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) a charming love story and Season 2’s “Rainbow” was all about rom-com tropes. But the initial thrust of the show was much more about failing romantic relationships, primarily Ted’s (Jason Sudeikis) s and Rebecca’s respective marriages — the whole reason Ted ended up in London coaching football was because Rebecca wanted to ruin the thing her ex-husband Rupert (Anthony Head) loved most. As Season 3 gets closer to its end (which could very well be the end of the entire series), the show seems to be scrambling to line up some endgame couples, with little thought going into whether the pairings are appropriate or not.

Kesha was on the verge of a panic attack in the spring of 2020 when her aging cat Mr. Peeps brought over her headphones. She’d been spiraling a lot back then, like so many people, her anxiety mounting as the pandemic shut down the music industry — but she took her cat’s gesture as a sign that it was time to meditate. And in the midst of a guided meditation she’d done many times before, something shook loose.

This post contains spoilers for the fourth episode of "Ted Lasso" season 3.
When it comes to charting the course of Nate Shelley's rise to villainy, everything leads back to A Taste of Athens. Nick Mohammed's former AFC Richmond kit man and assistant coach has spent all of season 3 so far managing West Ham United, poring over internet chatter about himself, and generally coming across as simultaneously arrogant and insecure. Nate wasn't always bad, though: he used to be an endearingly awkward part of the show, until a minor storyline about getting a seat at a restaurant revealed his quickly-inflating sense of self-importance.
Nate first visited A Taste of Athens, an apparently not-that-upscale restaurant in Tooting, in the season 2 episode "Rainbow." That time, he approached the hostess stand with a palpable sense of insecurity, as if he'd rather die than actually be acknowledged by the hostess, Jade (Edyta Budnik). At the same time,...

Brett Goldstein cursed and grunted his way into our hearts and to an Emmy last year for Best Comedy Supporting Actor for playing Roy Kent on Apple TV Plus’ hit, “Ted Lasso,” and now he’s looking to repeat that victory.
His submission for the show’s sophomore season is Episode 5, “Rainbow.” Roy is seen on TV working as a pundit on a soccer preview program. When the host questions how Isaac McAdoo (Kola Bokinni) is performing as Richmond’s captain, Roy vouches for Isaac’s skills and taunts a fellow panel member who puts down his former team.
At his favorite kebab restaurant, Roy asks to either have his photo taken down in the restaurant or be given free kebabs, neither of which is agreed to by the owner. Ted (Jason Sudeikis) shows up, much to Roy’s chagrin, and asks him to join Richmond’s coaching staff, which Roy declines.

Scrapbook-style book series “The Popularity Papers” is getting the TV treatment.
Amy Ignatow’s award-winning middle-grade novels will be adapted for the screen by Corus Media-backed Aircraft Pictures, the Oscar-nominated producers behind “The Breadwinner,” and Emmy-nominated production company WexWorks Media.
The original book series, for which the first installment was selected as a top-10 title of 2011 by the American Library Association’s Rainbow Project and won the 2010 Gold Award from the National Parenting Publications Association, tells the story of two best friends, Lydia Goldblatt and Julie Graham-Chang, who are on a mission to crack the popularity code and dismantle the social construct for middle-schoolers everywhere. Using the scientific method, the girls conduct social experiments on their peers with hilarious results.
The producers are at work on a single-camera, live-action comedy series (26 x 30′) that will air on youth-centric Canadian channel Ytv. On top of the financial participation of the Canada Film Fund,...

“Belfast,” “Dune,” “King Richard,” “No Time to Die” and “The Power of the Dog” have been nominated as the best dramatic film editing of 2021 by the American Cinema Editors, which announced the nominees for the 72nd annual Ace Eddie Awards on Thursday.
Those five films will compete in the Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) category, while the field in Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy) will consist of “Cruella,” “Don’t Look Up,” “The French Dispatch,” “Licorice Pizza” and “tick, tick…Boom!”
The most surprising omission was probably “West Side Story,” while Ace Eddie voters also bypassed “Nightmare Alley,” “Coda” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”
Nominations for the editing of animated features went to the same five animated films that have also been nominated by the Cinema Audio Society, Motion Picture Sound Editors, Visual Effects Society and Art Directors Guild: “Encanto,” “Luca,” “The Mitchells vs. the Machines,” “Raya and the Last Dragon” and “Sing 2.

After any awards body announces its nominations, the question at hand immediately becomes, “What’s the big takeaway here? What insight have we gleaned from this information, be it about a larger awards race or the vibe of the industry in general?” That’s the case, at least, if awards analysis is your job. Often, it’s difficult to differentiate wheat from chaff. But that’s not the case for this year’s Directors Guild of America (DGA) Award TV nominations. Not in the slightest.
