Bernard Hill, the actor whose memorable tones and rugged visage brought to life a variety of fantastic performances, has died. He was 79.
Born in Manchester in 1944, Hill quickly gravitated towards stage work before taking the chance to make the jump to film and TV. Yet his early career was marked by few standout roles, mostly relegated to brief appearances on the likes of I, Claudius and the BBC's Tom Stoppard adaptation Professional Foul.
Still, he found one of the first parts that would define his career in Alan Bleasdale's The Black Stuff, a one-off TV play in 1980 that the writer would expand into classic comedy drama Boys From The Blackstuff. Hill scored a BAFTA nomination for his performance as the tragic, yet dimly self-aware Yosser.
Other TV work included Dennis Potter adaptation Lipstick On Your Collar, a huge swathe of Shakespeare adaptations including Wolf Hall, disability drama Skallagrigg,...

Has Dwayne Johnson truly become the ‘Final Boss’ of not just the ring, but also in backstage professionalism? In WWE, where larger-than-life personas battle it out under the spotlight, it’s not uncommon to hear rumors of diva behavior swirl like a wrestler caught in a high-flying tornado.
The Rock, 51, has built an enviable reputation as a muscular, hard-working action-comedy movie star with a lot of box office pull for more than 20 years. Notwithstanding, a significant report that includes accusations about The Scorpion King star’s tardiness and his recent WWE work was just published.

The road to movie stardom for Dwayne Johnson is one of the unlikeliest in recent memory. A third-generation professional wrestler known the world over as “The Rock,” Johnson nabbed a supporting role in 2001’s “The Mummy Returns” and made such an impression that he starred in a successful stand-alone film, “The Scorpion King,” the very next year.
As his film career progressed, it became evident that, despite his success in action films, Johnson had a distinct flair for comedy, which he began to show off in such films as “Be Cool” (2005), “Central Intelligence” (2016), “Moana” (2016) and in his biggest-grossing film, “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” (2017). One of the most recent was “Jungle Cruise” (2021) for Disney.
But it’s in high-concept action cinema that Johnson has found his greatest success, especially after hopping aboard the highly lucrative “Fast and Furious” franchise. He even got his own spin-off adventure, “Hobbs & Shaw” (2019), which...

The Universal Monsters brand has had a rather mixed reception over the past 14 years or so. The 2010 remake of The Wolfman was a bomb, 2014’s Dracula Untold underperformed and the 2017 remake of The Mummy killed off the Dark Universe before it even began. However, the 2020 interpretation of The Invisible Man was rather well received and financially successful.
Now, as Universal attempts to reinvigorate the brand with a 2024 The Wolfman film and the Dark Universe section at Epic Universe, a beloved classic will be returning to theaters for its 25th Anniversary. The 1999 versions of The Mummy will be returning to the big screen this April in partnership with AMC.
The 1999 Mummy starred Oscar winner Brendan Frasier and Rachel Weisz. Set in 1932, the lost city of Hamunaptra is discovered and plundered for its many treasures. Among the decaying buildings and dark hallways rests the mummy of the high priest Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo). The explorers accidentally awaken him,...

Hollywood star Dwayne Johnson is seeing a few negative reactions from fans after the actor’s stance on Rebecca Ferguson’s shocking claims about a toxic male co-star. The Dune actor recently stirred the pot when she revealed the manner in which she stood up for herself after the unnamed actor took her for granted and screamed at her on set.

Ferguson’s brave move against her misogynistic co-actor prompted The Rock to give his two cents on the issue. Having worked with the British actor in Hercules, Johnson praised her courage to come forward and vowed to find the celebrity behind this toxic behavior. His endearing support to Ferguson though, is being insinuated rather unfairly by fans as having an ulterior motive.

If there's one thing I've learned from watching countless horror movies and episodes of "Scooby-Doo," it's that you don't mess with mummies. It's a superstition that's held so strong over the years that even when visiting museums, I tend to respectfully steer clear of the ancient Egypt exhibits. Myths about the latent powers of mummified royals have been around for ages, and many of them have been unfortunately influenced by stereotype-heavy depictions of Egypt and surrounding African and Middle Eastern cultures. Regardless of how much the world now knows about ancient Egyptian burial rituals, when most American moviegoers picture a mummy in their mind's eye these days, they're as likely to think about a Universal Pictures movie monster as they are the real thing.

Billed as a vampire comedy, Don’t Suck is the story of Pete, a burnt-out comedian who’s spent too much time chasing fame on the standup circuit. He’s finally managed to go viral, but it’s from using the C word on a cashier while trying to be funny. However, he and comedy club owner Danny dismiss it as her fault for being too easily offended.
That’s followed by Pete approvingly referring to Danny “Weinstiening” the students in his comedy class and boasting about being part of the mob that stormed the Capitol. That should give you an idea of where Don’t Suck is coming from, what kind of jokes to expect and whether or not to cut your losses and bail now.

The latest feature from David Fincher, a big-budget drama series from Steven Knight and Shawn Levy, and an Oscar hopeful starring Annette Bening and Jodie Foster are among the standout new additions hitting Netflix in November.
With The Killer, Fincher reteams with Seven writer Andrew Kevin Walker to adapt the graphic novel written by Alexis Nolent. The film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival this year and debuts on Netflix on Nov. 10, stars Michael Fassbender as a shadowy unnamed assassin and features a cast that includes Arliss Howard, Charles Parnell, Gabriel Polanco, Kerry O’Malley, Emiliano Pernía, Sala Baker, Sophie Charlotte and Tilda Swinton.
The Hollywood Reporter‘s review of The Killer described the film as “a satisfyingly retro, location-hopping genre exercise with fisticuffs, gadgets (albeit ones bought from Amazon) and smooth-talking antagonists that all plays like a tongue-in-cheek spoof of James Bond movies.”

The "Nightmare on Elm Street" film series was a hotbed for emerging talent. Many of the directors in the franchise would go on to prolific or interesting careers. Chuck Russell, director of "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" would go on to make Hollywood blockbusters like "The Mask," "Eraser," and "The Scorpion King." Renny Harlin, who directed "A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master" would likewise enter the Hollywood mainstream with films like "Predator 2," "Die Hard 2," "Cliffhanger," and "Cutthroat Island." Jack Sholder, Stephen Hopkins, and Rachael Talalay also emerged from the series' directors pool.
One can also find a few rising actors at the start of their careers throughout the Freddy Krueger movies. Famously, a young Johnny Depp starred in Wes Craven's 1984 original, and, for "Dream Warriors," Patricia Arquette made her cinematic debut.

Although Wes Craven's 1984 film "A Nightmare on Elm Street" is typically lumped in with slasher movies -- it came out right when the genre was cresting in popularity -- it doesn't quite follow the same structure as its contemporaries in the horror genre. The "Nightmare" movies, because they take place largely within dreams, are slightly more cerebral, bizarre, or imaginative than many of the stalk-n-stab movies that infested theaters at the time. The series also attracted interesting and notable directors who went on to other projects. Chuck Russell directed part 3. Renny Harlin director part 4. Stephen Hopkins directed part 5. And Rachel Talalay directed "The Final Nightmare."
"A Nightmare on Elm Street" marathons are common around Halloween, and steamrolling through all nine extant "Nightmare" films is an experience the series' fans have likely forced themselves through at least once. Having done it,...

While much of the initial fanbase that helped turn Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles into a pop culture phenomenon aged out following the original cartoon (1987-1996) and live action movies (1990-1993), the property has continued to flourish with reboots in TV, film, and comics every few years.
If the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem has you interested in exploring various versions of Tmnt, there’s no better place for a horror fan to start than Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series that aired for five seasons between 2012 and 2017.
While there’s an inherent connection to horror in the various mutants and monsters that pop up throughout the franchise, no rendition embraces the genre nearly as much as this one. In addition to references to classics like Alien, Friday the 13th, and The Evil Dead, the series employed several notable horror actors throughout its 124-episode run.

Dwayne Johnson once teamed up with Rosamund Pike for the 2005 feature Doom. But with Johnson still being in the beginning stages of his career, Pike was prepared not to get along with her co-star.
Why Rosamund Pike didn’t look forward to acting alongside Dwayne Johnson Rosamund Pike | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Pike wasn’t prepared to get the kind of co-star she got with The Rock on the set of Doom. The feature came out at a time when Johnson had gotten his footing in the industry. He had already starred in several films of varying success prior to Doom, including The Scorpion King and The Rundown.
Johnson decided to do the film because he was a fan of both the script and the video game it was based on. But he also thought, given the reputation of video game adaptations, it was an ambitious project.

Drive-in critic Joe Bob Briggs just showed writer/director Kevin S. Tenney’s 1986 horror classic Witchboard (watch it Here) on his Shudder series The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs this past Friday, so today seems like the perfect day for a Witchboard remake casting announcement. Deadline reports that Madison Iseman of the short-lived I Know What You Did Last Summer TV series, Aaron Dominguez (Only Murders in the Building), Antonia Desplat (Shantaram), and Charlie Tahan (Ozark) star in the film alongside the previously announced Jamie Campbell Bower, who caught a lot of attention last year for playing the villainous Vecna in season 4 of Stranger Things.
The Witchboard remake is currently filming in Montreal, despite being set in New Orleans.
According to Deadline, director Chuck Russell intends to go beyond the original Witchboard IP “with a deeper storyline, high intensity scares and imaginative visuals”. As such, the screenplay he has...

Girls just wanna have fun, no matter what decade it is.
Village Roadshow is producing a modern-day remake of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, the cult 1985 romantic comedy dance movie that starred Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt.
Marja-Lewis Ryan, who acted as showrunner of The L Word: Generation Q, is co-writing the script with Allie Romano, who was a staff writer and executive story editor on Generation Q.
Elizabeth Banks is producing with Max Handelman via the duo’s Brownstone Productions.
Girls, made by now-defunct New World Pictures, centered on an army brat (Parker) who settles in Chicago, attends a strict Catholic high school and contends with an even stricter father at home. The girl decides to follow her passion of dance and, with the encouragement of her new best friend (Hunt), auditions for the local TV dance show. Matt Reeves' 2022 film "The Batman" featured the title character in yet another rebooted continuity, this time even darker and grittier than ever before. Batman (Robert Pattinson) was seen as a pale-skinned, stoic outsider, rarely making public appearances as Bruce Wayne, preferring to use his fists to ignite fear in the hearts of the criminal underground. He didn't smile and seemed incapable of experiencing happiness. The Riddler (Paul Dano) was reimagined to resemble the real-life Zodiac Killer, and murdered people on the regular. Gotham City was more corrupt than ever, and it is tantalizingly suggested at one point that Bruce Wayne's late father might have opened the door for massive corruption to leak into the city's legislature. Sadly, that moment is walked back.
Selina Kyle (Zoë Kravitz), meanwhile, is a stolid and bitter woman living in poverty with multiple cats and her at-risk girlfriend Annika (Hana Hrzic). Technically, the screenplay never...

Writer/director Kevin S. Tenney’s 1986 horror classic Witchboard (watch it Here) is one of my all-time favorites, and we’ve been hearing rumblings of a remake for a long time now. Going all the way back to the 2007, in fact. Cyrus: Mind of a Serial Killer director Mark Vadik was attached to write and direct the film in 2011, then in 2019 we heard that Chuck Russell – whose credits include A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, The Blob (1988), The Mask, Eraser, and The Scorpion King – had signed on to direct the film. And it looks like the Witchboard remake is actually going to happen with Russell at the helm. Deadline reports that Russell has even found the first cast member for the project: Jamie Campbell Bower, who caught a lot of attention last year for playing the villainous Vecna (pictured below) in season 4 of Stranger Things.

The highlight of Brendan Fraser’s Oscars night was winning the Academy Award for best actor thanks to his acclaimed performance in Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale,” but perhaps in second place was a long overdue reunion with megastar Dwayne Johnson. The two actors starred together nearly 22 years ago in “The Mummy Returns,” the sequel to Fraser’s 1999 blockbuster “The Mummy” that marked Johnson’s film acting debut in Hollywood.
“Very cool full circle moment here with my long time buddy Brendan Fraser and his sons,” Johnson wrote on Instagram along with a video of the two actors reuniting backstage at the 2023 Oscars. “My very first film of my Hollywood career was ‘The Mummy Returns,’ which Brendan was the star. What began in 2002 as a spin-off of The Mummy series grew into a series of its own franchise with the many The Scorpion King films. In Hollywood, prequels, sequels, and spinoffs are often necessary to help clarify or expound storylines and plots. However, with The Scorpion King film series, audiences have perhaps had too many movies, with five films and an upcoming reboot movie in the franchise. The franchise revolves around the life and times of Mathayus, a skilled Egyptian warrior who eventually becomes the Scorpion King. The Scorpion King character first appeared in The Mummy (1999) sequel, The

As an actor, you can count on George Clooney to deliver the goods -- whether that means flashing that legendary, mischievous smile of his, or buttoning down the charm to play a more conflicted and possibly amoral character. As a director, however, you can never be too sure which Clooney you're going to get. There's the one who gave us the fascinating "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" and the riveting "Good Night, and Good Luck." Then there's the one behind the political thriller "The Ides of March" and the apocalyptic survival drama "The Midnight Sky," both of which have their merits but are hurt by weak stories. Finally, we have the Clooney who helmed stuff like "The Monuments Men" and "Suburbicon," which are baffling misfires given the wealth of talent involved in making them.

The Mummy star Brendan Fraser has defended the “janky” CGI in the film’s sequel, The Mummy Returns
The action-adventure movies were released between 1999 and 2008 and starred Fraser as the lead, Rick O’Connell.
In The Mummy Returns (2001), Dwayne Johnson made his acting debut as the Scorpion King, a role that inspired the following year’s prequel film The Scorpion King.
Unfortunately, The Mummy Returns is known in part for its notoriously bad CGI work on Johnson, dspite grossing over 435m at the global box office.
Asked about this in a GQ video interview, however, Fraser defended the movie and suggested there was a ‘charm’ to the dated technology.
“I know, I know, be kind,” he began.

International audiences fell in love with the handsome “Rick O’Connell and the sharp librarian Evelyn” and the Mummy’s ghost in the action-adventure movie The Mummy from 1999, which served as the first series of films.
The unusual duo fights against the undead Egyptian high priest Imhotep as he pursues his campaign to exterminate humanity in Stephen Sommers’ adaptation of the 1932 classic creature film.
It was combating the supernatural powers and terrifying plagues that unleash upon the land. This is entirely different from the 1930s and 1940s Universal horror films and Hammer horror films.

“Paradise City” is a semi-under-the-radar junk crime thriller, but when a movie like this one stars actors like John Travolta, Bruce Willis, and Stephen Dorff it can sometimes mean two things: that the stars are slumming, but that you’ll have fun watching them. The same movie made with grade-z actors wouldn’t have the same frisson. (It would be a pain to sit through.) Chuck Russell, the director of “Paradise City,” is actually a semi-a-list veteran whose credits include “The Mask,” “The Scorpion King,” “Eraser,” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors” (which some of us thought of as a rare ’80s slasher-movie standout). Who would have imagined that those credits, in the sage of Netflix, would now make Russell sound like some sort of low-grade genre renaissance man? In “Paradise City,” an underworld drama set on Maui, Russell knows that he’s making a grubby piece of product,...

Wrestler turned actor, Dwayne Douglas Johnson — aka, “The Rock” — is enjoying the best times of his acting career. The A-list Hollywood actor has had several spells of success which has made him one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood and one of the very best in the craft. And it looks like his reign in the industry is here to stay, at least for a while more with the actor’s consistency in adding hit titles to an already formidable list of movies.
Following his successes with the “Jumanji” and the “Fast & Furious” franchises, Dwayne Johnson followed it up with back-to-back successes with Disney’s “Jungle Cruise,” Netflix’s “Red Notice” and the latest of all, “Black Adam” — currently at the top of the Box Office for three consecutive weeks — where he ventured into the superhero universe.
This article gives you a quick highlight of the Dwayne Johnson movie collection in Chronological order.

In 2002, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was finishing up his time with the newly renamed World Wrestling Entertainment. After electrifying audiences over the course of his short but extremely memorable career in the ring, Johnson was already dipping his toes into the film industry, with appearances in "The Mummy Returns" and "The Scorpion King." With his out-of-this-world physique and magnetic charisma, even non-wrestling fans could see this guy was destined for stardom.
With Johnson's star rapidly rising, it makes sense that film producers were jockeying to get him on board with their projects. Everybody wanted to grab a hold of the rocket before it exited the atmosphere. A group of executives at Warner Brothers were very interested in the services of Johnson, even buying the film rights to a very unexpected piece of intellectual property in an attempt to earn his services.

Dwayne Johnson wasn’t always a rock. It was shortly into his career as a WWE (then WWF) wrestler that the actor adopted his famous sobriquet, having initially been named “Rocky Maivia” – a combination of his father and grandfather’s wrestling names. But “The Rock” has always seemed like a suitable aptronym. He’s hard, yes. Chiselled, sure. “Rock” might even conjure some sense of natural majesty – like a great cliff face, perhaps. But when have rocks ever been fun?
The man many tip as a legitimate contender for future US president – in the pop culture mould of Ronald Reagan or Donald Trump – is now starring in what could be his highest-profile film role to date. "Are you dangerous?" "Not to my friends." Such bland dialogue. Saban Films has revealed an official trailer for a film titled Paradise City, an action crime thriller arriving in theaters this November. A new film from the director of such classics as A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, The Blob, The Mask, Eraser, and The Scorpion King - he's been laying low since that last one. Ryan Swan must carve his way through the Hawaiian crime world to wreak vengeance on the kingpin who murdered his father. After being threatened by a ruthless power broker, it appears Ryan and his team are all out of options — until an excursion to the closely guarded island community of Paradise City unites them with an unforeseen ally. The film stars John Travolta & Bruce Willis, along with Blake Jenner, Praya Lundberg, Lorenzo Antonucci, Amber Abara, and Stephen Dorff. This looks as derivative...

Spoiler warning: This article will discuss plot details of Jordan Peele's "Nope."
Jordan Peele's "Nope" is, at its heart, a love letter to Hollywood animal wrangling. Since the dawn of cinema, the fictional Haywood ranch has provided horses for movies and TV commercials, and much is made of the fact that the Haywood patriarch (Keith David) once worked on Chuck Russell's "The Scorpion King." Gregory Jein, the acclaimed model maker and artist who worked on eight Star Trek properties and earned Oscar nominations for Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind and 1941, has died. He was 76.
Jein died May 22 in his Los Angeles home after a long history of health issues that included a battle with diabetes, a family spokeswoman told The Hollywood Reporter. His family elected to keep his death quiet until this week, she added.
According to the website Memory Alpha, Jein began his association with Star Trek in 1977 by designing a Klingon battle cruiser for Star Trek: Phase II, which would have been the first live-action spinoff of NBC’s original Star Trek had it gone forward.
He collaborated with visual effects maestro Douglas Trumbull on Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), then followed with Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989), Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country...

Talk about reviving a franchise from the grave! Twenty-six years (26!) after Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1996 action film Eraser comes a franchise reboot featuring none of the original cast and with two veterans of franchise reboots and Dtv sequels at the helm, director John Pogue and writer Michael D. Weiss. Yet whilst both filmmakers have experience in reboots and sequels they also have some other fantastic movies under their belts – Pogue wrote all Three of The Skulls movies (the second being a personal favourite) and Weiss penned some classic Dtv movies that went on to be staples of the early days of budget DVDs – Octopus and it’s sequel, Crocodile and US Seals 2… Yes, Eraser: Reborn has quite the pedigree.
