In 1986, Holt began collaborating with the Jim Henson Company, a partnership that would span over two decades. David Barrington Holt, who established and ran the first Creature Shop on the West Coast for The Jim Henson Company during his two-plus decades with the firm, has died. He was 78.
Holt died March 13 of complications from cancer at his home in Los Angeles, his son, Chris Holt, announced.
Holt started out with the Henson Co. in 1986 as deputy supervisor of its Creature Shop in the U.K. and was promoted to creative supervisor. He moved to Los Angeles in 1993 to set up a Creature Shop and produce the 1991-94 Disney-abc series Dinosaurs.
In L.A., Holt had creative oversight of shop operations including puppetry, animatronics, effects, performers, administrative matters and R&d, with developments in the field of real-time 3D CG animation.
He was instrumental in the creation of the Henson Performance Control System, which allowed a single performer to operate complex, computer-driven puppets in the same manner as though they were physical.

February is the shortest month of the year. Perhaps that’s what Disney+ is paying homage to with its very brief list of new releases for February 2022.
There’s not much to write home about on Disney+ this month. Feb. 9 will see the arrival of The Book of Boba Fett finale so start getting your theory-makin’ brain ready for that. The only other original series of note is The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, a continuation of the early 2000s Disney Channel animated show.

Before Mason Gooding left NYU in 2018 to pursue acting full-time, he penned a six-page paper arguing that one Hollywood property was particularly deserving of a reboot: Wes Craven’s Scream. A few years later, the actor found himself in a general meeting with directing duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who were developing a new take on the genre-defining franchise that launched 25 years ago. After a two-hour conversation, Gooding mentioned his paper, and was a little embarrassed when the filmmakers asked to read it.
“I sent it to them and heard nothing for like two weeks,” says Gooding. Then he got a call from his agents. Rather than going through screen tests and callbacks, he had a direct offer for Scream 5. “I muted myself and screamed,” says the actor.

Time is running out to stream films like “Lincoln,” “The Fisher King” and “He Got Game” on HBO Max. Below is the complete list of everything leaving HBO and HBO Max in January 2022, which includes some classic “Planet of the Apes” films, Ben Affleck’s Oscar-winning “Argo” and 1988’s “Married to the Mob,” among others. Most of these titles leave the streaming service on Jan. 31, but departing HBO and HBO Max on Jan. 20 is a behind-the-scenes look at Guillermo del Toro’s new film “Nightmare Alley,” which is exclusively in theaters now.
If you’re looking for noteworthy titles to add to your watchlist before they depart, “Lincoln” is one of Steven Spielberg’s best, “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” is a handsome and nail-biting spy thriller and “The Fisher King” is a great two-hander with Jeff Bridges and Robin Williams.

Exclusive: The debate has begun over a WGA referendum that would give screen credits to hundreds of feature film writers who currently aren’t eligible to receive them. The referendum would authorize the use of an “Additional Literary Material” credit for all “participating writers” who work – sometimes for many months – on motion pictures but don’t receive any screen credit at all.
The WGA, which determined credits for 213 films in 2020, says that “On 69 of these films – roughly 1 in 3 – at least one participating writer received no credit. In total, 185 participating writers wrote on features for which they ultimately received no credit. These are the writers who would be eligible for a new credit.” The guild noted that “this new credit would denote employment or sale of material, not authorship.”

Here's everything coming to Amazon Prime instant video in March 2020!
For its new releases in March 2020, Amazon Prime is enlisting help from some horror friends.
Yes, horror is the name of the game this month with Night of the Living Dead (albeit the 2007 version), The Crazies, and The Descent all arriving on March 1. And if that weren't enough, Pet Sematary comes a little later on on May 19. Look at Church the cat in that thumbnail image. How could you not want to watch his spooky adventures?
The Amazon original offerings are typically sparse for March 2020 but still pack some punch. Italian import ZeroZeroZero stars Gabriel Byrne and arrives on May 6. Then British import Agatha Christie's The Pale Horse comes a little later on March 13.
For what it's worth, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot debuts on March 13 so it's not all horror and all European TV all the time.

We’ve already touched base on the Netflix titles heading our way next month, but what about Amazon Prime?
Though the former is widely considered to be the undisputed heavyweight of the online streaming world, it didn’t take long for Prime to become a tantalizing prospect, no thanks to kick-ass original series like The Expanse, The Boys and The Man in the High Castle.
The real issue for the end consumer is juggling all those subscriptions, particularly now that Disney+ is live across North America (March 24th for those in the UK). Be that as it may, as February nears its end, Amazon has detailed all of the content bound for Prime in March 2020.
Among the new additions are a host of big-name horror films, including Neil Marshall’s The Descent and its creepy sequel. Best of all? Pet Sematary, the reimagining of Stephen King’s literary developed by Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer.

While researching the history of Christmas movies, I watched 22 different adaptations of “A Christmas Carol,” and even that felt like just scratching the surface. So if Ebenezer Scrooge can be subject to myriad interpretations — even when some fans are convinced that one version or other is the “definitive” one — why shouldn’t the Grinch?
That’s an easier argument to make now that we have “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch” as an example of how to revisit the material, particularly since the 2000 live-action take was such a grim and overblown piece of Yule-sploitation. That version no doubt led many to dread this latest one, from “Minions”-makers Illumination Entertainment, but this new animated feature is bright, both in its color palette and in the wit and liveliness of the storytelling.

The screenwriter behind such family fare as Cool Runnings, Little Giants, and Snow Dogs, Tommy Swerdlow spent nearly two decades addicted to heroin and methadone, and with any addiction also comes the unceasing search for the next fix. He’s now channeled these experiences for his directorial debut, A Thousand Junkies, and we’re pleased to premiere the trailer today courtesy of The Orchard. Starring alongside co-writer Tj Bowen and the late Blake Heron–both of whom Swerdlow met in AA–one can’t imagine a more authentic rendering of such a life-consuming addiction than what this pitch-black buddy comedy captures.
“The film embodies a statement made by Jerry Stahl, writer of Permanent Midnight: a good friend who is a junkie will do all of your drugs and then spend the day helping you look for them,” John Fink said in our Tribeca Film Festival review. “A Thousand Junkies...

The feature directorial debut of screenwriter Tommy Swerdlow, A Thousand Junkies strikes a nerve and strikes a delicate tonal balance, often making the viewer laugh and cringe from painful identification within a matter of seconds. Boasting a successful career in the ’90s as the writer of a number of beloved family films—including Cool Runnings, Little Giants, and Snow Dogs—Swerdlow was, at the same time, a full-blown heroin addict. It’s not surprising that Tommy Swerdlow’s helming debut about three heroin addicts in desperate search of a fix reeks with authenticity. The film’s director/co-writer was an addict himself for nearly two decades, suffering open-heart surgery and a near-fatal bleeding ulcer as a result. Known for his screenplays for such family-oriented comedies as Cool Runnings and Snow Dogs, Swerdlow has now turned his experiences into A Thousand Junkies, a film geared to a decidedly different demographic. It recently made its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Every year, celebrities, filmmakers, journalists and movie fans flock to the Tribeca neighborhood in lower Manhattan for the Tribeca Film Festival, an illustrious celebration of film and television that features some of the most exciting projects and panel discussions of any media festival in the country.
Founded by Jane Rosenthal, Robert De Niro and Craig Hatkoff in 2001, shortly after the attacks of 9/11, the festival has helped revitalize the city and remind both filmmakers and fans alike of New York City’s valued place in film and TV while becoming a welcoming community for voices and perspectives from all over the world. “It’s also a fabric of our city. Disney Movies Anywhere would like to further help you get into the Christmas spirit with this short video that uses clips from Disney animated and live-action movies to create a mashup rendition of “Jingle Bells.” Classic and new films alike were used, from the beloved 1964 film Mary Poppins to 2013’s Saving Mr. Banks, which was about the tumultuous road Walt Disney had to take to secure the rights to make Mary Poppins, and from Sleeping Beauty to Snow Dogs, which was a movie about the tumultuous road Cuba Gooding Jr.'s career took after prematurely winning an Oscar, or it was about dog sledding or whatever.

Some very sad news: screenwriter Michael Goldberg has died, at the age of 55.
Some really sad news. Screenwriter and producer Michael Goldberg has died, from the brain and sinus cancer that he'd been battling for over a year. He was 55 years old.
Goldberg's list of credits include the screenplay to Little Giants, Bushwhacked and Snow Dogs. He also wrote and directed The Lovemaster back in 1997. Yet it's Cool Runnings that's likely to be the project of his closest to many of our hearts. The 1993 comedy remains a firm, witty favourite, and the script - which Goldberg co-wrote with Lynn Siefert and Tommy Swerdlow - was his first work to make it to the big screen.
Rest in peace Mr Goldberg. 55 is no age. And thank you for the chuckles.

Yes, friends, as you can see from the title of this episode, it’s time for a good old-fashioned “Pull off the bandage” episode of Mousterpiece Cinema. Gabe and Josh, first-timers to the 2002 comedy Snow Dogs went in as open-minded as possible, but this dumb, goofy movie about an uptight dentist dealing with dogs in Alaska wore them down quickly. They’re joined by Sound on Sight contributor Zach Lewis to discuss many important matters, such as the acting talents of Sisqo and James Coburn, a 1970s mystery co-written by Stephen Sondheim and Anthony Perkins, 1980s pop stars making cameo appearances in new movies, Terrence Howard’s reference to War Machine in the first Iron Man, and the qualitative merits of Jingle All The Way. Also, Snow Dogs. We promise, we did talk about Snow Dogs in this episode. But we also went on a few tangents. Can you blame us?...

Soon it will be your turn to give an award show acceptance speech. Maybe it will be at the SAG Awards, the Golden Globes, or the Academy Awards. If you're stumped on what kind of speech you should give, try one of these! 1. The “Pesci.” Keep it as short as possible. When Pesci won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 1991, his speech consisted of five words. “It’s my privilege. Thank you.” That’s it. No thanking his agent or manager. Nothing for Scorsese. Just “thanks.” 2. The “Cuba." Run to the stage and lose your goddamn mind in the most adorable way possible. When Cuba Gooding Jr. won Best Supporting Actor in 1996, he endeared himself to everyone watching. Then he made “Snow Dogs.” 3. The “Benigni.” Pretty much the same thing as the Cuba, but in a foreign language. Roberto Benigni won Best Actor in 1999 and literally leapt to the stage from the audience.

Cuba Gooding Jr. is best known for something that happened nearly two decades ago. You know what it is: that moment at the Oscars when his Best Supporting Actor acceptance speech stole the entire show.
Of course, a lot has happened to Cuba since then, both good and not-so-good -- from receiving poor critical reception in comedies like "Norbit" and "Snow Dogs" to starring in a George Lucas film about the Tuskegee Airmen to playing an energetic and erratic drug dealer in "American Gangster."
Now he's set to appear in "Lee Daniels' The Butler," which hits theaters this weekend. This is semi-familiar territory for the Oscar winner, having previously acted in films that have shed light on African American experiences -- particularly ones that have never been depicted on screen.

It's a horror story that any movie fan can relate to, Twi-Hard or not: You're watching TV and you see the name of your favorite movie listed on your channel guide, only to flip over and discover that the "Twilight" they're showing doesn't have Edward and Jacob battling for the love of Bella — but instead Gene Hackman and Paul Newman fighting over Susan Sarandon.
You were just punked by Same Name Syndrome. (Hey, at least it also includes a topless Reese Witherspoon.)
It happens often. In fact, just this week, "The Butler" hits theaters ... except it's officially titled "Lee Daniels' The Butler," 'cause the rights to the title "The Butler" belong to a 1916 silent short film that no one's ever seen (yes, really). Read all about that silly saga here.
Anyway, here's our guide on How to Differentiate Movies With the Same Title (That Are Not Remakes).

Melbourne, Jun 24: A woman's hilarious break-up letter, filled with equally funny reasons of the split, has gone viral.
The letter titled "Why I'm dumping you", was posted to Imgur, which is a social media website, on Wednesday, the Daily Telegraph reported.
The reasons include; "You can name all of the dudes in 1 Direction", "You eat your cereal with water instead of milk" and "You have one-too-many posters of Michael Phelps in a Speedo".
She also states, "You used air quotes when you talked about the moon landing", "You insist on calling the president Barack Hussein Obama" and "You used the phrase 'Jay Leno said the funniest thing...'"

The love story of Shovelface and Mouth Breather comes to an end in the final installment of Honest Trailer's take on "The Twilight Saga," "Breaking Dawn." The hilarious takedown of the final two "Twilight" movies doesn't just mock Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, but also the Cullens, the "Snow Dogs" and the fact that vampires don't even sparkle in the sunlight anymore. Hey, that's a good point!
The funniest parts come from the Honest Trailers montage of all of "Breaking Dawn's" stares, the need for four different chess games and KStew's inability to apply toothpaste to a toothbrush. Yes, really, it happened. Check out the video after the jump!

Winning an Academy Award can change an actor's life...or it can be a ticket to obscurity.Tom Hanks may have won Oscars back-to-back, but so did Luise Rainer. And sometimes, an actor can squander the opportunities presented by an Oscar win. (Cough cough "Snow Dogs" cough!) In some cases, it's not the actor's fault. Brenda Fricker was wonderful as Daniel Day-Lewis' mother in "My Left Foot," but there probably weren't a lot of roles coming her way after her win. Forest Whitaker and Louis Gossett Jr. both seemed to be selective about their roles following their wins, but their follow-up films failed to connect with audiences. And Gossett certainly tried. He was in the running for the role of Hannibal Lecter in "Silence of the Lambs," but lost out to Anthony Hopkins. But then there are actors who just seemed to make bad choice after bad choice, going...

Earlier today I posted a trailer for a film called Vanishing Waves, and while I haven’t seen the movie yet I was extremely moved and excited by the trailer itself. The result? I’m really looking forward to seeing the film. But sometimes a trailer can have the opposite effect. Sometimes a trailer can make you wish someone would immediately rip out your eyes and rape your skull with Tchéky Karyo’s bad right arm. This is that trailer. Still here? First off, I’m so sorry for suggesting you watch that. Truly. But second off, what the hell are these people thinking? Forget the fact that the lightning in a fishnet-covered bottle that is the original A Christmas Story will never be captured again. Forget the fact that Daniel Stern is no Darren McGavin and Braedon Lemasters (?) is no Peter Billingsly. Forget that it appears to feature little more than recycled gags and dialogue from...

Just when you thought the concept of direct-to-dvd sequels had been all but replaced by remakes and reboots, along comes Warner Home Video to remind us that Dtv flicks are still alive and well... and equally as frustrating. Apparently someone out there thought it was a good idea to create a sequel to the timeless holiday classic A Christmas Story without any of the original cast or creative team (admittedly, director Bob Clark and writer Jean Shepherd are no longer with us). Thirty years have passed since the original film was released but somehow Ralphie is only a teenager in this sequel, which certainly makes for some chronological confusion (I assume it is set in the 1940s?). Either way, Ralphie now has his sights set on a new toy for Christmas: a 1938 Hupmobile Skyline Convertible, which sounds slightly safer than a Red Ryder Bb Gun. Braeden Lemasters (Men of a Certain Age) will play Ralphie,...

We interrupt your heart-warming, drool-inducing Olympic coverage for a story that will bring tears to your eyes in a different way. In the bad way, is what we’re saying. Academy Award-winner Cuba Gooding Jr. currently has a warrant out for his arrest for “municipal battery”; the charge is due to an alleged altercation early this morning between Gooding and a New Orleans bartender. “He was apparently getting rowdy when people were trying to take photos, and he got aggravated,” Nopd Director of Public Affairs Remi Braden told Celebuzz. “The bartender tried to calm him down, at which time he allegedly pushed her, and before he left the bar he pushed her again.” So we guess that answers what Cuba’s been up to lately. We don’t mean to be glib, but we honestly blame Snow Dogs for this. And Boat Trip. And Radio. And…

RadarOnline.com reports the two have a cat, Max, and a dog, Bear. Cuba Gooding Jr. may be known for playing roles in family-friendly pop soda like "Snow Dogs" and "Jerry Maguire," but he apparently doesn't like to be reminded of it. TMZ reports that New Orleans police officers have issued an arrest warrant for the actor for shoving a bartender at The Old Absinthe House on Bourbon Street on Tuesday morning at 2 a.m.
According to the New Orleans Police Department, no arrests were made at the scene. The 44-year-old actor, who is in New Orleans shooting the historical drama "The Butler," allegedly became enraged and started cursing after several passersby began snapping photos of him; he then allegedly shoved a female bartender after she asked him to leave the bar. Gooding Jr. is wanted on a misdemeanor battery warrant.

Every year, the five major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, The CW, Fox and NBC) order pilots to be considered for the fall season. A pilot, as you may know, is the first episode of a TV series and the final step in a long development process from idea to screen.
From the 87 drama and comedy pilots ordered this year, a new crop of television shows will be selected -- and I read the scripts for each and every one of them. Over the course of this week, I'm walking you through the network's pilot slates, offering a bit of analysis on their present schedules and providing you with a rundown of the drama contenders. (Plus, a little bit of info about the comedies, too.) Of course, not all of these shows will find their way to your TV set -- in fact, most of them you may never hear of again.

With the Academy Awards just weeks away, we popped 100 bags of popcorn and spent some quality time ruining our eyes in front of the computer, tracking down the most memorable Oscar acceptance speeches of the past 25 years. From the heartfelt to the sentimental to the downright weird, there are plenty that stand out from the pack. We also took to the red carpet and asked celebs what they think makes a perfect acceptance speech. Bryan Cranston, Allyson Hannigan and a slew of hilarious celebrities-turned-awards-show-critics offered up their advice.
But some trophy recipients might learn better by example, so to help them out, we present in no particular order, the nominees for the Most Memorable Oscar Acceptance Speeches of the Past 25 Years:
1. James Cameron, Best Director – Titanic, 1998
Burned in our brains because: Cameron actually shouts “I’m the king of the world!

In case you hadn't heard, the Academy Awards are on ABC this Sunday. Regardless of what you think of the nominees, it is clear that the film business is at a crossroads. Fewer people went to the movies in 2011 than any year since Al Gore invented the internet; our nation's multiplexes are in the throes of an epidemic called sequelitis; and the Academy could barely settle on a host for Sunday's Oscars.
But this week, my focus is on the most vulnerable members of the Academy: The Actors. Actors have more at stake than anyone at this annual bacchanalia -- their faces are the most recognizable and their personas are most associated with the success or failure of a film. And, even more perplexing and daunting: winning an Oscar may actually be more hazardous to an acting career than losing. Winning an Oscar puts more of a microscope on an actor than dating Leonardo DiCaprio.

Through no fault of their own, some actors have struggled to escape from under the weight of an Academy Award win — especially if it came early in their career. Despite their best efforts, they have yet to repeat their previous levels of success and live up to the title "Academy Award winner."

Did Batman need to get rebooted again? Isn't the Christopher Nolan/Christian Bale series still going on? Oh, sorry, apparently "The Tuxedo Begins" was just 30 Rock's way of parodying the superhero movie style of the first Nolan film.
It wasn't nearly as funny as some of the earlier episodes this season, but the half hour was certainly enjoyable... especially from the rooftop scene onward.
As Jack stood in the dark, using his deep ominous voice to explain to Liz what his plans were to help the city, I got wrapped up in the moment. Liz was there, finally taking her turn into full superhero villain mode (crazy hair, strange clothing, Joker-esque lipstick), which made the fact that she was using the city to her own benefit the final piece to the puzzle.
The rest of that story, with Jack flipping Liz into the trash, and the crowd of New Yorkers...
