Let us all observe a moment of silence for the Sandpiper Air flight that went down off of Cape Cod nearly 25 years ago… but don’t worry about observing too long, because it was a fictional event on the NBC comedy Wings. Hey, remember when celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse had his own NBC sitcom that got yanked off the air after a couple months? Well, Carrie Preston does… because she was in it.
A decade before she won an Emmy for The Good Wife, Preston played kooky (and blonde!) food stylist B.D. Benson on Emeril, which lasted just seven episodes in the fall of 2001. Starring Lagasse as (what else?) a TV chef, Emeril was created by Designing Women alum Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, with a supporting cast that included TV veteran Robert Urich and future The View co-host Sherri Shepherd. Hoppin' John is one way to incorporate black-eyed peas into a New Year's Day dish. The legume is believed to bring luck and prosperity in each new year. While typically associated with southern tradition, the lucky legumes are also consumed at Rosh Hashana as part of Jewish New Year celebrations.
Emeril Lagasse offers a southern take on the bean with a recipe for Hoppin' John. Emeril suggests soaking the black-eyed peas overnight, so you may want to get moving on this recipe now. You'll also need a large ham hock, along with various ingredients you likely already have in the pantry.
If you're eating kosher and still want to enjoy the promise of prosperity, the New York Times has you covered with a recipe for Couscous With Black-Eyed Peas and Greens. You won't need any exotic ingredients with this dish, as long as your spice cabinet is well-stocked.

Emeril Lagasse's cameo on Sunday night's installment of New Orleans drama "Treme" showed a darker, more time-worn side to the seasoned celebrity chef -- not that it takes much to darken up a man whose catch phrase is "Bam!"
In the episode, penned by Anthony Bourdain, Lagasse doles out wisdom to chef Janette Desautel, played by Kim Dickens, just as she dips her toes into celebrity chefdom before opening her new restaurant.
"How do you do it?" Dickens asks Lagasse. "The promo stuff, the interviews, dog and pony shows, I mean they want me to go on the Today show with Al Roker." Before answering he takes her Uglesich's, a legendary restaurant that shuttered in 2005. He explains there are two ways to run a restaurant: keep it small and risk closure, or expand and do the talk shows.

It's Carnival time on Treme and this year, the festivities find New Orleans in much better shape that previous years. Financially, spiritually - the foundation of Nola has grown in strength and Mardi Gras will be more of a culmination of that progress and provide the residents with a chance to celebrate how far they've come. In prior years, Carnival had been more of an escape, a way to put thoughts of homelessness, crumbling infrastructure, delayed governmental aid, and a seemingly hopeless future to rest for a time. New Orleans might be not where its residents would like it to be, but it's getting there and now's the time to reward themselves for making it to this point.
On tonight's episode of Treme, the Carnival spirit isn't limited to only New Orleans, as Nelson and Annie are both in Washington D.C. for a Mardi Gras Ball. Nelson is, of course,...

Things got uncomfortable at the "Top Chef: Texas" (Wed., 9 p.m. Est on Bravo) reunion when Andy Cohen asked defeated finalist Sarah Grueneberg about her reaction to losing.
Sarah was visibly upset when Paul Kim was named "Top Chef," but a little bird had given Cohen a juicy snippet of behind the scenes gossip.
"I heard from someone in production that you actually told a judge in the heat of the moment to eff off."
Sarah denied it, saying, "I don't believe that." However, looking at the reaction of judges Emeril Lagasse and Tom Colicchio, it seemed like maybe she really did.
Sarah added, "I was really emotional, and really sad, but I don't remember saying that." As she apologized in case she had said something she didn't remember saying, the bad memories of that final judges' table came back and she welled up again.

Chicago – Some fans are going to want to send back the latest offering from Chef Tom Colicchio and the team behind Bravo’s Emmy-winning “Top Chef.” At first, it’s a little baffling to see one of the most acclaimed reality programs of all time switch up its formula this notably with a series of starting challenges that will remind viewers of “American Idol.” But I believe fans can adjust and have faith in Colicchio and his belief that the new structure will create the most intense competition yet. It’s a new sauce but it’s ultimately the same amazing dish.

The cooking world was momentarily abuzz yesterday when a somewhat convincing press release suggested that southern chef Emeril Lagasse (who recently joined Top Chef) had a major feature-length film coming out. "A House Divided" supposedly dealt with "infidelity, abortion, religion, art and unemployment, all through the lens of wry humor and real heart" and co-starred Cheryl Hines and Timothy Hutton. Yeah, total hoax.
A spokesman for Emeril confirmed that fact, "I saw something about that this morning," Jeff Hinson said, "but, no, there's no truth to it. Totally false."

While the restaurant business is risky, challenging and faddish, and the life of a restaurant can sometimes be short, every city has cherished institutions that have stood the test of time. In each 30-minute episode, Lagasse will visit a new city and go behind-the-scenes at three historic eateries -- speaking with the chefs and customers to help reveal their fascinating stories.
The Cooking Channel also revealed several other new primetime offerings, including shows that look at street food, pastry chefs and Spanish foods: 'Eat St.' (premiering April 12), 'Unique Sweets' (April...

Jeff Zucker's announcement that he's leaving NBC Universal when the company's merger with Comcast is finished brought some pangs of nostalgia. Because we won't have Zucker to kick around anymore.
Zucker was the president of NBC Entertainment from 2001-04 -- he had been the executive producer of "Today" prior to that -- then moved up the executive ladder from there before becoming CEO of NBC Universal in late 2007. Since then, he hasn't had as much of a hand in the day-to-day running of NBC, so most of his programming legacy comes from before then. But he left a lot of things to remember him by -- here are a few mementos from the Zucker Era.
"Fear Factor." In 2001, reality was still a relatively new concept for the broadcast networks. "Survivor" was only a year old, "American Idol" and "The Bachelor" didn't yet exist. NBC's first big entry into the genre was "Fear Factor,...

Plus, Will Emeril replace LuRe, the Glee-bashing begins, Neil Patrick Harris needs a little powder, Beautiful People returns, and David Sedaris to the big screen!
CBS has three pilots in contention for As the World Turn’s timeslot. We previously mentioned the ripoff of The View starring Sarah Gilbert (who’s producing, so big chance for her) and Julie Chen. Also a reboot of Pyramid, and now a cooking competition show hosted by Emeril Lagasse. We should know in the next couple weeks.
The second season of Being Human, starring Russell Tovey’s ears and featuring gay vampires in a subplot, will hit BBC America July 24th.
Craig Kilborn, who made a gay joke so foul when hosting The Daily Show I almost wouldn't watch it once he was gone, is being given a shot at a talker by Fox. They’ll test it in the 7pm hour in...

In this week's Battle of the Network Gays we have Cam's date night with Gloria squaring off with Officer Cuddleybear's low-key coming out, Marshall's floral activism and Dave Koz making the band.
More on this week's nominees and why they were chosen after the break.
Modern Family's Cameron Freed from the bonds of couplehood and parenthood with Mitchell, you'd expect a night on the town with Modern Family's two biggest personalities to end up in jail, or the hottest club. Instead we got a very human instance of a son-in-law trying so hard to make a good impression that nothing went his way, until adversity itself became the bond.
Southland's Officer John Cooper All was not what it seemed on a trip to the desert to see a collegue in rehab and pay repsects to one who fell. Everything about this trip had layers of players and meaning,...

At the beginning of last night's two-hour "Super Chef Battle" drool fest, Michelle Obama (pictured, with host Alton Brown and Iron Chef Mario Batali) offered the contestants -- Batali and his special celebrity partner Emeril Lagasse vs. Iron Chef Bobby Flay and White House executive chef Cristeta Comerford -- the use of anything in the White House garden. All items produced by the White House Garden brim with nutrients and magic and sprout up in rich color combos that inspire hope, change, and Michelle Obama's outfits. After all of Food Network's breathless Obama promos, I was hoping for...

The other night on "Jon & Kate Plus 8," Jon and Kate Gosselin proved that they still have it in them to be in the same room without killing each other. We hope this keeps up...if only because it might make people finally stop talking about them.(Oh yeah, also we love love. That's what we meant to say.)All it took for the couple to get along was Emeril Lagasse. The couple spent most of the latest episode in the kitchen with the chef, who was on hand to make the 100th episode of the show a little more flavorful and just a little less bitter! (See what we did there?)Jon and Kate seemed back to their old selves...which means that Kate acted ...

"At this point, whoever lands in the interview chair, does the interview...Don't ask any questions. It's called rolling with life," said Kate Gosselin in the opening scene of tonight's new Jon & Kate Plus 8 episode, "Bam! 100th Episode." Jon and Kate roll through the newest episode with ease as they invite celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse into their Pennsylvania home to give the family a cooking lesson. It's nice to see the troubled couple together, but we can't help but notice that Kate hasn't exactly learned her lesson about digging into her husband every chance she gets. Here's how tonight's Jon bashing went down... When Emeril asks her how Jon is in the...

ABC's new Tuesday lineup posted another nightly win among adults 18-49, while CBS continued its rein on the night in total viewers. At 8 p.m., 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter (12.8 million viewers, 4.7 rating/14 share among adults 18-49) cooled off from previous weeks, but still won the half-hour in adults 18-49, while passing the total viewers baton this week to CBS' veteran military drama JAG (14.9 million, 3.3/9 from 8-9 p.m.). ABC's According to Jim (12.4 million, 5.0/14) at 8:30 p.m. also topped the competition in adults 18-49, building on to its 8 Simple Rules demo lead-in, according to preliminary Nielsen data. NBC didn't see improvement from switching its 8-9 p.m. comedies. The block of In-laws (6.9 million, 2.4/7) at 8 p.m. and Just Shoot Me (8.0 million, 3.0/8) at 8:30 p.m. was down 13% in the 18-49 demographic, and up 5% in total viewers from last week, when Just Shoot Me (6.6 million, 2.7/8) opened the night at 8 p.m. and In-laws (7.7 million, 3.5/9) ran at 8:30 p.m. The two shows' delivery in 18-49 is on par with what Emeril and Three Sisters did for NBC in the time period last year. At 9 p.m., NBC's Frasier (13.6 million, 5.2/13) won the hour with Life with Bonnie (9.3 million, 4.0/10) running second in 18-49, while the two networks' sitcoms at 9:30 p.m., NBC's Hidden Hills (9.9 million, 4.3/11) and ABC's Less than Perfect (9.3 million, 4.1/10) ran neck and neck. CBS' legal drama The Guardian (13.2 million, 3.3/8) topped the 9-10 p.m. hour in total viewers. For the night, ABC averaged 11.6 million viewers and a 4.7/13 in 18-49 to CBS' 14.0 million viewers and a 3.6/9. NBC logged 9.8 million viewers and a 3.8/10, while Fox posted 6.1 million viewers and a 2.9/8 with repeats of That '70s Show, Cedric the Entertainer Presents and John Doe.

Army Archerd reports that Robert Urich, who made a TV name for himself playing tough guy roles in such series as Vega$ and Spenser: For Hire, is making another comeback shot at series TV. This time Urich will be digging deep into his TV past and going the sitcom route, playing the manager of Emeril Lagasse on the new sitcom Emeril. Urich was approached for the role by producer Harry Thomason the moment he was freed from his obligation to the failed pilot Late Boomers and starts filming later this month. Though not widely recognized for his comedic talents, Urich has starred in Tabitha (a failed spin-off of Bewitched), Soap, Faye Dunaway's failed sitcom It Had To Be You, and the sci-fi comedy Ice Pirates.
