If I say I like this show, is that a bad thing?
TheLittleSongbird8 August 2010
I am not saying this is the best show ever, because it isn't, but I like it. True it is very predictable at times, and may have some clichéd characters here and there and it is not the most original show ever admittedly.

The animation is bright and colourful, and the music is nice. The writing is amusing and the stories do have their very good moments. I for one like the title character Sharon, her screaming and all that may annoy some, but she has a great and loyal personality, and I think Alicia Silverstone did a swell job voicing her.

Overall, a good if not great show. 7/10 Bethany Cox

of all the times i watched that show i never knew it was Alicia Silverstone who played Sharon.no lie.as soon as i saw that in here i started to crack up.i mean the only t.v. show i've seen her in is clueless as a matter of fact i watched clueless today too but it's like the episode that i've seen a million times.my friend was actually the one who told me about brace face and i started to watch it 24/7. every time it came on ,and my sister watched it too even when she was like 17 and 18 she told me about it too.wow i'm just really shocked by this.it doesn't even really sound like her in brace face either. Sharon's voice sounds. ......i can't even explain it but now i know that it's her who is the voice of Sharon in brace face..wow

Fairly Enjoyable Teen Fare
jmatrixrenegade9 April 2005
Reading through the comments, it is surprising how many simply do not like this show. This is fine, but it would be simply unfair if it is assumed as comparable to other teen cartoons, this is somehow uniquely bad. It is not. In fact, the show is fairly enjoyable, providing an uplifting message that being an ordinary teen is fine, and that all those little dramas that are deemed horrible at the time will generally work out okay. Not much of an edge and it's fairly predictable, but its heart is in the right place, and for a cartoon, it is good 1/2 hr. show.

I write this as an adult by the way. All the same, why all the complaints about Sharon? The voice is a bit annoying, but actually it is also a bit interesting -- distinctive and catchy. The show also does not really find braces horrible -- clearly, Sharon's life turns out fine, but surely teens in her place will find braces annoying and at times horrible to contemplate. This is realistic. And, yes, teens (and adults!) are often self-centered etc. Sharon in the end also turns out to understand the needs of others. She basically is a fairly realistic form of a semi-popular teen with various hang-ups and so forth.

As compared to other Disney (and teen) programming, it is probably in the middle of the pack. I class it above Lizzie McGuire, especially the later years when she is more Hilary Duff (star) than ordinary teen, though that show has stronger supporting characters. Nothing special, but fairly enjoyable, and not a bad Alicia Silverstone effort ... the woman surely did worst, lol.

I used to love Braceface as a teen...
maddiewatchesstuff1 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
And as I've been going through the nostalgia bug for the past 5 yrs, I have been rewatching shows from the 90s and 00s. In most of these shows, such as "Hey Arnold!" & "My So Called Life"... even "Parker Lewis Can't Lose," each show has stood the test of time and had a relatability to it despite some if the kiddy lessons and outdated issues.

The main characters are always cool and help to highlight the side characters around them and connect with the viewers. I expected Braceface to be the same. I love Alicia Silverstone and loved Braceface as a tween, so this was a no brainer. After rewatching the entire thing, however, I see just how annoying and lackluster Sharon Spitz and the show is.

While she desires the things that every teen girl wants, making her incredibly relateable, she highlights the worst parts of every teen girl.

1. She has no talents. While everyone around her (including the mean girls) has things they excel at, she cries every few episodes about how terrible she is at everything, instead of finally learning to be good at anything.

2. Did I mention, she cries literally every few episodes?

3. When she is not busy making every mistake in the book, she's intentionally breaking the law and dragging her friends and siblings into it.

Next, despite being an average student, being terrible at interacting with boys, and not being remotely athletic we're supposed to believe that that she gets the most popular guy at school to be her bf and the attention of other "hot" guys, becomes class president, gets the attention of celebs, is the competition of the talented popular girls, has the smartest friends, becomes a camp counselor before she's old enough and so on?

Since it is all unbelievable, we have to assume Sharon always got her way because she's good looking. That was the only thing I could think of to explain why a pretty, popular, talented mean girl would be jealous of her and why celebs/talent agencies would fawn over her.

The only thing she truly stands for is not letting anyone shine over her (not even for a moment), meddling, and animal activism.

The only misfortunes she truly has to deal with is her magical braces. If they didn't do mystical things, Sharon would have zero problems because there's nothing wrong with braces. In fact, people thought they were cool in the 00s.

The animal activism, her family, and friends are probably the only interesting things about her and the show. However, it's not enough to carry it and I'm honestly surprised it got 3 season's, while many classics didn't get the same. Then I remember if I loved it, other little girls did too.

Always fun to watch
chateau_dwars18 August 2007
Having virtually every kid TVshow synchronized into Dutch, I don't know how the English version sounds, but I really like the Dutch version too. Braceface embraces all those horrific problems teenage girls go through. From falling in love with the one boy everyone wants to growing from a girl into a woman. Episodes vary from love to hate and everything in between.

Actually, this is not really a series for young girls. All the problems main character Sharon gets into will be highly recognizable for girls in their late teen-ages or twenties, but not if you yourself are actually 13. Having said that, a wonderful series that I always tend to enjoy in the morning or the afternoon for a good and decent laugh.

The verdict is in...Its a Go
ThunderKing610 June 2020
When I was a youth and would watch TV. I use to dread this show. Fast forward. I binged watched the show and I fell in love with it.

Its an honest down to earth show. It touches various high school subjects like peer pressure, grades and family problems. It's similar to the likes of Ready or Not or Degrassi but just in animation therefore its more flexible and at times has uncommon behaviors.

It's a cartoon that I recommend to tween girls and teenagers. However, children nowadays are only attracted to trash and filth shows so iunno if they could sit thorough a great episode of Brace Face.

Braceface isn't SUPPOSED to be all about Braces
mrsdhansen28 March 2004
Watching Braceface is about so much more than watching a girl deal with her braces. It's all about being teenaged (or pre-teen) and the issues that come with it. Boyfriends, rivals, parents, embarrassment, friendship, insecurities... it's all in there. Most young people who watch Braceface should be able to identify, if even just a little, with one of the show's characters. The braces are just a mechanism of mischief. All in all, Braceface can get pretty deep (for a cartoon) and can make you look at yourself differently. It's much needed positive entertainment, compared to other pre-teen and teen offerings. As a mother, I am proud that my daughter has chosen to watch a show that she can actually get something out of for a change.

Once upon a time I once hated this
ThunderKing615 September 2021
As a child during the classic cartoon era, I had many shows that I indulged in. Many of those were just quirky, boy themed shows. I knew Braceface existed, any time I saw it I would grunt in disgust. I hated this show.

Then one day...

As a young adult, I binged though the show on youtube. I was amazed of how great of a show it was. It was not your typical bonker cartoon of hitting and toilet humour, it was a show about growth, positivity and living. Braceface was a realistic cartoon about the day in life of a girl. Okay it may not have been 100% realistic but, it had stories/characters where you can relate to.

Braceface is about a of a divorced family where they focus more on the young teen female in her day to day life. She gets braces and the braces are a blessing and curse; for they can sometimes cause problems or save the day. Not only that this show reflected on real problems such as friends, family, school, dating etc. Where the characters would deal with various problems without being obnoxious. Some problems were solved, some were not, and that's life.

I underrated this show, and it became one of the most positive, grounded and realistic animated shows of all time.

I recommend young females to watch this show. I also suggest that boys can watch it too. From the outside it looks like a girly show, but it's not.

Braceface: Underrated Classic.

The show is Brilliant and HAS CLASS!
lorrie8528 October 2007
I love Braceface because it shows all the perils a teen goez thru. I I think that Disney did a Fantabulous job! Look past the unsignificance or her so-called MAGICAL BRACES, and look to the morals that are ended up being taught at the end of the show. It opens up a Teens eyes 2 see that the problems they think are big, are actually utterly small and unsignificant when everything comes down 2 the end. The sho is brilliant and full of Detail, Pizzaz, drama, and some comedy 2. This is all coming from an 8th grader too, that gets this sho totally & comletely and some of you adults just don't get the show's utter significance. THEY SHOULD Definitely PUT IT BACK ON Disney CHANNEL, because most of Disney channels shows 2day have teens in them, so it could totally go into the upbeat thread. I LOVE BRACEFACE!

I Had Braces, and you know...
dancing_naked28 May 2003
I find this show intriguing. I mean, here's this girl who has braces and feels that life is ending, but she can only see the bad side and not the good. The braces give her a conscience, a sense of direction. Sure, they get her into trouble sometimes, but they help show here wrong from right in some weird way. Sharon is like most (not all) girls at 13. Boy crazy, struggling to fit in and feeling like a loser. She deals with real issues, has real beliefs, but at the same time struggles with conformity. Its not all about the Braces, but trying to fit in when it seems impossible. But she learns her lessons and when she gets them off she'll be grateful, like me, and all the other former "bracefaces" out there. :) Go Sharon.

I love this show. Some people say it only describes braces horrible in the first episode. Her braces get her into trouble in most of the episodes. I'm sad they cancelled it I would love to see more but sadly that won't happen. Watch it to see what you think. You can find episodes on YouTube or Tubi for free.

So, what do you want; "Catcher In The Rye"?
telepinus152528 January 2003
Come on, settle down...what's the problem? I haven't seen this allergic a reaction to a kids' series since "Scrappy Doo" debuted! So, Sharon Spitz is a tad self-absorbed in her own problems; so? What adolescent ISN'T self-absorbed to some degree? I think what Flaming Pig and co. forget is that just about all fictional young teens, from Holden Caulfield to our hero in "A Christmas Story"; from Luann DeGroot to Veronica Ganz ( a six-foot tall thirteen-year-old: try THAT on for size), from the young narrator in "April Morning" to the ever-so-sensitive Daria Morgendorffer, young teens are always going to impress their worldview with their own not-so original growing pains. The only time that youth grows up quickly is through forced change, such as "April Morning", or Barbara Tuchman's "A Distant Mirror". Should Sharon Spitz emulate Claire Danes' character in the darkly comic, all-too-brief show "My So-Called Life"? Hey, how about letting Sharon and her pals emulate the sociopathic little no-neck amateur vivisectionists of Yukio Mishima's "The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With The Sea"? Or even better: let's dispense with the intellectual approach and let Sharon and Maria shoot up the school a la Columbine? Okay, okay, maybe I'm reading too much into this. It couldn't be that it's too...Canadian? Naah, Flaming P. is a Canuck, so that can't be it. Because it's from Nelvana? I HAVE observed, many times, a negative reaction to any thing "Nelvana" among certain people. Or maybe it's the not-so-subtle "Afterschool Special" feel of many episodes. But, is this realy a bad thing? It's a show about teens, so why not teen problems?Besides, the title is, after all, "Braceface"! What happens once the braces come off for good? Think about it...

A delightful look at problems most experienced by teens
Flamehead 323 July 2002
Braceface is the story of Sharon Spitz, a naive teenager who lives in your everyday town and experiences everylife teen experiences. The premise is to give insight on the most common situations younger people can soon find themselves in and have fun while doing it. It's an enjoyable show, and I like the vivid colors used for animation. All in all, I give it 3 licks of flame out of 4.

I love it!
sweet_dreamer21 October 2002
Braceface is just a cartoon, but it´s a great show. Actually the first time I saw it, I totally adored it! And I used to dislike cartoons. When they show it I'm actually singing along with the opening song.

It´s about a 13 years old girl named Sharon: the braceface. She and her two best friends Conner and Maria try to survive high school. Sharon falls in love with a boy named Alden. He has his own band. But just like always there's a girl who thinks she's the whole world. I'm talking about the enemy of Sharon. That girl has a crush on Alden too. Things work out just fine and Alden and Sharon even got together.

Somehow this cartoon reminds me of Lizzie McGuire. But after all it's a great cartoon and kids will love it!

A Frequent Viewer's Opinion
Hunnytea18 January 2002
'Braceface' is an enjoyable half hour episode, animated series. The characters are built well and show some depiction of ordinary, real life teens. Although not sticking completly to the series title it does not matter too much, at least it's an original title! The introductory song is catchy and happy, sliding nicely into the episode's story without losing a viewer's attention. 'Braceface' covers a new medium of animated series for teens, the drawings are funky and the stories are orginal yet relatable; good fun.

THE BEST
xgirlie14 October 2001
The first time I saw this show I loved it right away. It deals with teenage problems that, let's face it probably any teenage girl would go through. Sometimes it can be a bit childish, but it only makes it more humorous. It has a great voice cast, especially Alicia Silverstone. I love Braceface and I hope it continues, it can be a great show for any teenager.

great, perceptive show
SBKnaack31 January 2003
This is a great show. While the animation is fairly basic, the themes of the show are relevant and the stories well done. This isn't high drama. It's a show aimed mainly at people in middle school, although i find many of its subjects can apply to anyone from grade school on up. I m an adult, I watch it, I like it. Many of the episodes deal with useful topics, like what to do--and not to do--when: your boyfriend dumps you, you aren't in the popular crowd, you do stupid embarrassing things at school and everyone knows about it, or your friends begin hanging out with people you don't like. It's all pretty basic and everyday, but it is well done and appears in a format that isn't "preachy." I could have benefitted from a show like this when i was 14.

"Braceface" is a humorous program that gives positive messages to kids and teens in each episode.

"Braceface" is currently being shown in the US, Canada, England and Spain and probably in other countries very soon if not already.

I dont like this at all. The whole point is about how horrible braces are, which is presented in the first episode, ONLY. The other episodes are just like any other dumb cartoons for teenagers. This show really doesn't live up to its plot.

Pathetic.
dootuss2 January 2002
This show is truly pathetic. While the first episode pretty much tells viewers how bad braces are, the show drifts off after that episode and becomes another stupid cartoon for teens. I feel bad for Alicia Silverstone. She hasn't done much lately, and this does not help one bit. This show (along with Angela Anaconda, and ANYTHING that has the Olsen twins) pretty much forces me to avoid ABC Family at all costs.

Don't waste your time with this show. It sucks.
