Teun who is helping his father during printing dissident flyers gets a parrot from Johan's colleague. The reason was that he himself wants to move abroad because of the precarious political situation in the Netherlands.
There are rumours that the Organisatie van Vaderland-lievende Officieren (Organization of Fatherland-loving Officers) has plans to carry out a coup. The OVO denies that there would be such plans, although it thinks that it is better for the Netherlands when the current gouvernment would resign. Shortly after that, those rumours are not pure rumours, but... facts. The facts become clear when the popular music program Countdown gets interrupted by an emergency speech by the new general, announcing that the coup has been completed. Later on the emission of the speech is repeated in the next day at schools, libraries, etc.
Hans Tergragt, one of Karin van Dam's teachers, gets into problems because of his way of teaching because the parents of his pupils protest against his way of teaching history. His boss recommends him to quit teaching. Not without consequences. One day later, Hans got arrested.
The junta works on reprogramming the schedules of the TV nets. Sesamstraat and Jeugdjournaal will be revised and thoroughly analysed before their emissions can be resumed. The pop music program Countdown will be deleted. Instead, there will be programs about the Netherlands and nationalism. They search buses and arrest suspicious people. Teun van Dam gets terrified by this.
Vera van Dam gets into problems because the library where she used to work gets closed. The military destroys all books who are there. Johan van Dam temporarily leaves Vera, Karin and Teun, because he wants to hide. The rest of the Van Dam family faces a junta razzia.

Soldiers carry out a razzia in the house of family van Dam. They want to know where the father, Johan van Dam, is. Teun, Karin and their mother don't know where he is. The soldiers destroy many properties in the house, especially books. They finally leave the home without torturing and threatening with death.
An informer tells the rest of the family that Johan got arrested and is in prison, somewhere in the city. Karin tries to find him. The prison keeper told her in what prison he is held. Finally she sees someone who she recognizes as being Johan, her father. He has been tortured. The soldiers denies to Vera and Teun (who came later to the prison) that Johan is there.
During the visit to the prison, Johan shows a drawing of a parrot, similar to the real parrot that Teun has at home. Teun tells him, that some people have been released from the prison. He thinks, Johan may be one of the next group to be released.
The soldiers invaded the house when Teun (with help of the neighbor) hung the Dutch flag upside down (blue - white - red instead of red - white - blue) which the soldiers interpret is as resistance.
Vera, formerly a librarian, is a cleaning lady now. There is less income because a cleaning lady earns less than a librarian. Because she has a rented house, she is threatened to be thrown out, because of not paying. On one day, Vera, Karin and Teun are thrown out of their house because the deadline for paying the rent was crossed...

The house of the family Van Dam has been evacuated, because Vera isn't able to pay the rent anymore. Evacuating houses seems to be easier, because there is no longer a judge involved. They can take little things, such as the parrot, with them. The rest will be auctioned.
Vera, Karin and Teun try to find shelter at Wilma and Pieter, sister and brother-in-law of Johan. Wilma wasn't amused by this situation. They sleep in Wilma and Pieter's living-room.
Vera wonders whether there will be a trial against Johan. She wants to know what will happen to him further, but the keeper of the prison where Johan is held, has no useful information about this.
In the meantime the Tyrese medical delegation arrives in the Netherlands. There is a chance that Johan can suddenly be freed. The informer tells Vera that she must decide about Johan's and their own asylum in Tyros. Vera tells Pieter, Karin and Teun that Johan will be freed and that the whole family will go to Tyros. They are no longer a burden to Wilma and Pieter. Teun desperately wants that the parrot Lukas go with them.
Johan cures from the injuries that were caused by the tortures by the soldiers.
When the aeroplane is about to depart, it seems that Johan won't join the rest of the family, but a van suddenly comes, Johan enters the plane and the handcuffs are removed. Finally the family is reunited and the plane takes off. Everyone, except Karin, is tired and falls asleep. She gets her diary and writes about the new asylum country Tyros.
After the arrival, the Van Dam family is taken apart from the rest of the passengers. They get interrogated by an officer that only speaks Greek. There is an interpreter, though. The family feels being unwelcome. The police temporarily takes Lukas from the family, until further notice...

After the arrival on Tyros, the famile gets interrogated by means of an interpreter by the Tyrese police. The police wants to put the parrot into quarantaine. After the interrogation they went to a shelter. During the travel to the shelter there was a discussion about the situaion in the Netherlands. To the accompanist Johan shows his wounds caused by the torture during is stay in the prison.
There is a big room where they are eating. No privacy. Discussions about the resistance in the Netherlands. Finally they are alone... "It feels like a dream," Johan said. During the washing there isn't privacy either. Teun feels uncorfortable to wash himself there. Finally they are in a sleeping room... four together. Johan and Vera finally have the opportunity to be intimate.
