- Mangal Singh is a rich grain trader who takes 50% commission from farmers to buy their produce at the Mandi. The farmers union, led by Mahavir, browbeat Mangal to agree to a 10% commission. Mangal retreats in face of the farmer's union but takes his revenge by killing Mahavir. Mahavir's murder is witnessed by truck driver Amar. Amar intervenes and captures Mangal to take him to the police station and inspector Rana (Shahbaz Khan). Rana is in cahoots with Mangal Singh, and he arrests Mahavir's colleague Sardar Khan for Mahavir's murder.
Amar is in love with Neeta (Mamta Kulkarni). Neeta is the daughter of Ghanya Seth (Satish Kaushik), who also owns the fleet which Amar drives. The farmers take their complaint to Judge Amarnath Singh, who is the local sponsor of the Mandi. Amarnath goes to Mandi himself and determines that Mahavir was not killed by Sardar Khan. The case comes to Amarnath's court where Attorney Agnihotri (Pramod Moutho) makes his case asks for life imprisonment for Sardar Khan. Amarnath uses his judicial powers to assign a lawyer to Sardar Khan and asks that the case be investigated afresh.
A cruel and evil landowner Jagannath Singh (Dilip Kumar) is murdered in his fort. Jagan had thrown out his wife Suman, when she was pregnant with Amar. Neelam (Kunika) was Jagan's mistress. Amarnath is Jagan's twin brother and decides to investigate. He finds the list of suspects is endless. Inspector Khan (Avtar Gill) helps Amarnath with the investigation.
The prime suspects are Jagannath's son Amar (Mukul Dev), Jagannath's abused wife Suman (Smita Jaykar) and a woman named Yamini (Rekha) who claims she was sexually assaulted by Jagannath. Yamini's brother is Kundan (Malay Chakrabarty), who is physically distorted. Yamini was a famous dancer who was invited to a private show at Jagan's fort, where she was sexually assaulted after her performance.
Amarnath convinces Amar to take over Jagan's estate and undo the injustice done by him over the years by using his wealth the right way. Lajjo (Rajeshwari Sachdev) is Amarnath's daughter.
Amarnath takes Amar to Jagan's fort to take possession. Amar and Amarnath visit Yamini where Kundan attacks Amar, prompting Yamini to shoot her rifle, but Amarnath takes the bullet to save Amar. Amarnath tells the police that this was an accident to save Yamini from jail. Yamini has a son named Raja (Master Sahil Chheda). In Yamini's absence, Suman had brought Raja to her place and tells Yamini that as Jagan's son, he has an equal right to all property. Kundan and Yamini are dead against having to do anything with Jagan's wealth, but Amarnath says that his own wife committed suicide due to Jagan's atrocities. Amarnath says that he only wants to bring the remaining family together.
As Amarnath investigates Jagan's murder he finds an ornate bangle near the area where Jagan's body was found. He finds a blood soaked sandal, and a piece of glass where the foot was cut to cause blood on the sandal. Amarnath suspects that the murderer could be a woman, who was injured during the attack on Jagan, and is perhaps limping due to the deep injury to her foot. Amarnath suspects that Yamini is hiding a foot injury, but it turns out that she has a wooden prosthetic in one leg. Yamini says that after her assault by Jagan, she tried to commit suicide by jumping off the fort walls, but she survived and lost her foot.
As Amar accuses Amarnath, Suman apologizes to him and Amarnath sees that the ornate bangle he recovered belonged to Suman, and she was missing one of the pair. Amarnath has a panic attack at the prospect of Suman going to jail, but later finds that Suman has both bangles. Suman says that the bangle was with jeweler for repairs. Later, Suman is shown meeting Neelam and paying her Rs 2 Lakhs and a property deed for her silence.
Amarnath adopts Raja legally, so he can go to school. Meanwhile, Amar finds that Sardar's daughter is being forced to marry an old man, as the family has no money due to Sardar being in jail. Amar goes to court and identifies Mangal Singh as Mahavir's killer. Mangal manages to escape court, and Amarnath suspends Inspector Rana. It is revealed that Neelam was working for Mangal Singh. Neelam approaches Amar and says that she knows the real killer of Jagan and asks him to change his testimony in the Mahavir murder case. When Amar refuses, Neelam approaches Inspector Khan and identifies Suman as Jagan's killer.
To save his own mother, Amar confesses to killing Jagan. He reveals that on the night of his father's death he accidentally shot him while trying to fight him off when Jagannath held Amar and his mother at gunpoint. Amarnath resigns as judge so he can argue Amar's case himself. Amar confesses to Amarnath that one night he found that his mother had gone to meet Jagan. He followed and found Suman begging Jagan to leave the land alone, where she and the other slum dwellers live. She argues that the land was bought by money she brought in dowry and is in her name. Jagan refuses to consider her plea and says that if he doesn't act, land mafia would occupy the land, and he will lose millions. Jagan tries to bribe Suman with jewels to sign away her rights to the land. Suman refused to sign, and Jagan attacked Suman with his ornate gun. This is when Amar intervened and in the chaos the gun fired, with the bullet hitting Jagan. Neelam arrived and saw Jagan lying on the ground and a gun in Amar's hand. Neelam was the one who stepped on the broken glass and cut her foot. Neelam then threw and murder pistol into the ravine.
In court, Amarnath proves that Neelam knew Mangal Singh and that a few weeks after Jagan's death Suman had transferred all the slum property in Mangal's name. He also proves that Neelam was married to Mangal. Amarnath produces the ornate gun's twin in court (He says that their father gave identical pistols to Jagan and Amarnath). He claims that Jagan was never killed by a bullet from the ornate gun, as is proven by the postmortem report. The bullet that killed Jagan had a .32 bore, while the ornate gun had a .45 bore. The .45 bore bullet was found lodged in the fort wall.
It is discovered that Jagannath's had many more enemies who could have killed him, including landowner Mangal Singh (Gulshan Grover) and even Jagannath's brother Amarnath, who doesn't seem to have got on well with Jagannath himself in the past. Mangal is astounded since he owns a .32 bore pistol, but he knows that he did not kill Jagan. The pistol was with Neelam, who also swears that she never killed Jagan. Mangal had given the gun to Neelam to shoot Jagan while he was meeting Suman, but she never did that.
Mangal finds the ornate gun in the ravine and replaces it with the .32 bore pistol. Amar attacks Mangal's lair with Neeta to recover the ornate gun and brings it to court. With the ornate gun in court, Neelam admits that Mangal handed her the .32 bore pistol to kill Jagan before Suman signed the slum property papers, but she claims that she never did. Mangal also claims that he never shot Jagan.
Amarnath reveals that Yamini killed Jagannath for his wrongdoings to her brother. Kundan had confronted Jagan when she was pregnant and giving birth. Jagan had Kundan brutally beaten up and thrown in jail. Yamini was looking for an opportunity for revenge. That night, she and Kundan saw Mangal give a .32 bore pistol with silencer to Neelam. Kundan stole the pistol from Neelam's purse and Yamini shot Jagan with it at the exact moment when Amar fired the ornate gun. The family decides that Mangal should go to jail for Mahavir's murder, since he will not be convicted there due to his long line of false witnesses.
