Update: Deadline has reported that Martin Scorsese has locked his cut of Killers of the Flower Moon, and the runtime isn’t quite as long as was previously rumored. The final runtime of the Apple Original Films drama will be three hours and 26 minutes; still a lengthy watch, but very much under four hours.
—
Killers of the Flower Moon is blossoming into becoming Martin Scorsese’s longest film, with a runtime that could be upwards of four hours and 16 minutes.
While the official runtime for Killers of the Flower Moon has yet to be confirmed, it will certainly be one of the most-discussed aspects of the movie, no matter the quality of it. It is set to premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it will screen out of competition. But even Cannes director Thierry Fremaux doesn’t know the official runtime, telling Variety, “I don’t know what the final length is,...

Director Lee Daniels was in the midst of wrapping up his latest movie — The United States vs. Billie Holiday, which tells the story of the late, troubled jazz singer and how “Strange Fruit,” the anti-lynching protest song she introduced to the world, brought her both triumph and troubles — when he noticed an unsettling parallel. He suddenly got a firsthand look at just how timely his new film project was. “We were in the middle of editing and that [George Floyd’s death] happened,” he recalls. “People were sending me [protest] videos...

“I was running a fever of rage over how badly the [Covid-19] response was being handled by the federal government,” says the Oscar- and Emmy-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney on The Hollywood Reporter‘s Awards Chatter podcast as we discuss what inspired his latest documentary, Totally Under Control, which he directed with his Jigsaw Productions colleagues Ophelia Harutyunyan and Suzanne Hillinger.
The trio began work on the film last spring with the goal of determining if the deadly mistakes of President Donald Trump and his administration had been avoidable, and then sharing their findings with the world before the Nov. 3 presidential election. Says Gibney, “It felt like if that was true, and we’re in an election year, then this is important information for voters to have.”

When HBO Sports announced upcoming docuseries “Tiger,” controversy followed. The problem didn’t lie in the sometimes-tabloid story of champion golfer Tiger Woods, but in its telling: The directors are two white men, Matthew Heineman and Matthew Hamachek, who previously collaborated on the Oscar-nominated “Cartel Land,” on which Hamachek served as editor.
HBO dropped the production’s introductory press release July 9, in the middle of a summer marked by the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd, nationwide protests, and Black Lives Matter. A community of Black, Indigenous, and people of color (Bipoc) documentary filmmakers responded to “Tiger” as one more film in a series that never seems to end: a story of Black people told by white men. And this time, they would not allow their voices to remain on the margins.

It was another emotional hour of the series.
New Amsterdam Season 1 Episode 14 was another tearjerker with a touching case about a presumed veteran, Helen's emotional case with an abandoned baby, and the departure of a character who grew on us.
Initially, the case with Mustafa seemed like another case involving a veteran who suffered from suicidal tendencies and trauma, but New Amsterdam put a different spin on it that was refreshing.
Mustafa wasn't a traditional veteran. He was a combat translator who served alongside soldiers, but in most cases, he wouldn't be considered on.
There is an ongoing effort by many to get combat translators/interpreters the recognition that they have more than earned and safe haven in the states after fighting so hard for the country.

Did you know combat translators don't get dog tags? It's insane when you think about it.

Janet Montgomery’s character of Dr. Lauren Bloom may have some serious issues that could see her leave New Amsterdam hospital — and possibly even the show. During last night’s episode titled The Blues, Dr. Bloom learned that Dr. Iggy Frome (Tyler Labine) would not clear her to return to emergency medicine given her continuous struggle with Adderall. At the end of the episode, she’s seen leaving the hospital with Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) telling her that she will always have a place at New Amsterdam Hospital when she’s ready to return. It’s clear he’s not giving up on her. […]

Last night, at the end of a busy week at work when I was just in the mood to hang out at home and unwind a little, I decided that it was a good time for me to wrap up my viewing of Criterion ’68 by ingesting an assortment of short films that had accumulated, like the last crumbs of cereal at the bottom of the bag, in my chronological checklist of films that I’ve been blogging about over the years. It was a suitable occasion for me to fully immerse myself into what turned out to be a festival of random weirdness. My wife, recovering from a bout with illness, was feeling a bit better but wanted to find a productive use of her time with the resurgence of energy, so she kept herself busy by working on a new quilting project. That left me free to indulge without...

The St. Louis Central Library downtown (1301 Olive Blvd) is teaming up with Cinema St. Louis and the St. Louis International Film Festival to present Directors Cut: The Films Of Charles Burnett.
Charles Burnett is a writer-director whose work has received extensive honors. Born in Vicksburg, Mississippi, his family soon moved to the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles. Burnett studied creative writing at UCLA before entering the University’s graduate film program. His thesis project, Killer of Sheep (1977), won accolades at film festivals and a critical devotion; in 1990, it was among the first titles named to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry. European financing allowed Burnett to shoot his second feature, My Brother’s Wedding (1983), but a rushed debut prevented the filmmaker from completing his final cut until 2007. In 1988, Burnett was awarded the prestigious John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur (“genius grant”) Fellowship. His first widely released film, To Sleep with Anger...

Here’s why I conflate legendary bluesman Robert Johnson with legendary cartoonist/illustrator Jim Steranko.
Johnson took American roots music and molded it into The Blues. Brilliantly, I might add, having composed and recorded such classics as “Sweet Home Chicago,” “Terraplane Blues,” “Hellhound on My Trail,” “Love in Vain” and “Cross Road Blues,” a.k.a. “Crossroads.” In all, he produced only 29 tracks, every one between 1929 and 1938
Steranko took the comic art form and broke all the barriers, reinventing and reenergizing comics storytelling and design. He did so with equal brilliance, having produced such award-winning and virtually always-in-print features as Nick Fury Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., Captain America, The X-Men, Superman, the graphic novel Chandler: Red Tide, and Heavy Metal’s adaptation of the movie Outland. The bulk of this work was published between 1965 and 1976, but by then Steranko had pretty much moved on to painting...

Let's take a moment away from the buzz around "Game Of Thrones" season five, and the chatter swirling about Alex Gibney's Scientology documentary, "Going Clear," and talk about another HBO project that has nothing to do with popular bestsellers or investigations into celebrity-associated cults. Instead, let's take a look at "Bessie," an old school biopic that's coming with lots of style. Helmed by "Pariah" director Dee Rees, and starring Queen Latifah, Michael Kenneth Williams, Mo'Nique, Mike Epps, and more, the film tells the tale of "The Empress Of The Blues," Bessie Smith, tracking her rise from a struggling young singer to the icon and one the most successful artists of the 1920s that she became. It's not often that old school blues artists get this kind of treatment, but few of them match the legend of Bessie Smith, and this looks like it hits all the right notes. "Bessie...

We're on the verge of the SXSW Film Festival, so several area theaters will be turning into official venues by this time next week. Specialty screenings are still going on in the week ahead, but it definitely is about to slow down until after the festival has us all wiped out.
Austin Film Society has a Free Member Friday tonight at the Marchesa with Wes Anderson's Bottle Rocket. The group will be screening the movie along with the original short film that inspired it and it's free to all Afs members. Members can also go the Afs website to claim two free tickets to a special advance screening on Tuesday night at the Paramount of Alex Gibney's new documentary Going Clear, which examines the Church of Scientology. The film will debut on HBO later this month, but this special advance screening will feature Gibney and Texas author Lawrence Wright...

James Brown finally got the biopic treatment this weekend with the release of Get On Up, starring Chadwick Boseman as The Godfather of Soul himself.
What’s most intriguing about the cinematic treatment of Brown’s life – both on- and off-screen – is that so much of it took place in front of a camera. In fact, Elvis Presley aside, it’s hard to think of a more physical performer that spent so much time being captured on film in the early days of the rock n’ roll/rhythm and blues era.
Brown’s popularity rose and sustained itself for so long that it’s often easy to forget that while he was a fixture well into his more funk-driven days of the 1970s alongside the likes of George Clinton, he got his start as a contemporary of Little Richard.

Legendary blues guitarist Johnny Winter, known for his fiery, speedy playing and his long-flowing white hair, died yesterday in Zurich, where he was on tour. He was 70. Winter, the older brother of Edgar Winter, was a contemporary of Eric Clapton and was one of the first blues guitarists so embraced by rock audiences that he was able to sell out arenas during his hey-day in the ‘70s. He was widely influenced by the blues guitarists who came before him, such as Muddy Waters, and he went on to inspire such guitarists as Stevie Ray Vaughan. Born in Beaumont, Texas in 1944, Winter got his start playing in clubs as a teenager. He signed with Columbia Records in 1969 and appeared at The Woodstock Festival that year. He performed with Janis Joplin, as well as his brother. He was inducted into The Blues Foundation Hall of Fame in 1988. Artists including Tom Morello, Kiss...

Music has always been a big part of Clint Eastwood's career, with the filmmaker also serving as composer and songwriter for a strong handful of his films, yet he's never actually made a musical. Outside of the biopic "Bird" and an episode of the PBS series "The Blues," Eastwood has never really had the chance to dig elbows deep into movie with wall-to-wall music, but now the director who seems to have done it all, will cross the genre off his bucket list. The first trailer for "Jersey Boys" is here, bringing all the songs of the hit Broadway show to the big screen. Starring John Lloyd Young, Erich Bergen, Vincent Piazza, Michael Lomenda and Christopher Walken, and penned by John Logan ("Hugo," "Skyfall"), the films will tell the tale of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, documenting the rise and fall of the successful rock 'n' roll group of the 1960s,...

In 2009, cyclist Lance Armstrong wanted to prove his naysayers wrong. He came back from retirement, and touted that he’d win the Tour de France in order to prove to the world that his past seven wins were not boosted by any illegal enhancements. As with other chapters of his fascinating life, this comeback provided a great narrative, one made into a nearly-finished documentary project called “The Road Back,” which had director Alex Gibney and his crew following Armstrong around as he hustled for another Tour de France victory. Matt Damon was signed on to do voiceover, and the project was co-produced by Spielberg’s key producer Frank Marshall.
“The Road Back” was then remodeled into The Armstrong Lie when the truth about Armstrong’s doping began to make its way to the surface in 2012, both through teammate testimonies and a few select moments from Armstrong himself. Initially crafting what...

The mercurial director describes his latest film, Prince Avalanche, as an art movie invaded by a pair of multiplex goofballs – it's a tribute to the wide-ranging films of his adolescence
Prince Avalanche is a poignant comedy featuring tender performances from Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch as mutually antagonistic road-painters working the fire-scorched highways of late 1980s Texas. But as delicious as the film is, cinemagoers with long memories may regard it with justifiable caution. It's the latest movie from the writer-director David Gordon Green, whose work is best approached as the cinematic equivalent of a perpetually spinning coin. If a Green film falls shiny side up, it will transpire to be a lyrical arthouse elegy such as his debut, George Washington, which led to the director being anointed the new Terrence Malick, or All the Real Girls, a faltering love story from that bygone age before its star, Zooey Deschanel,...

As Brownie McGhee once said, "The blues is life."
Nowhere knows that life better than Chicago, which has been the world's blues mecca for more than a century. And this weekend, a slew of legendary musicians were recognized in a special ceremony at the city's premiere blues club.
The Blues Hall of Fame ceremony at Buddy Guy's Legends read like a who's-who of the local circuit, including performances by Mud Morganfield, Toronzo Cannon and Harvey "T-Bird Huck" Huckstep.
Buddy Guy himself, the man responsible for grooming artists from Jimi Hendrix to Eric Clapton to Stevie Ray Vaughan, was on hand to receive his award. Other inductees included Billy Branch and the late Muddy Waters.
Guy was one of the first performers to popularize the Chicago blues style, born after the Great Migration brought droves of black workers from the south to major northern cities.

The Nixon director's new American history series sees him follow in the footsteps of Alfred Hitchcock, David Lynch and Steven Spielberg
The title of Oliver Stone's Untold History of the United States, the 10-part documentary series that starts its UK run this Friday (Sky Atlantic, 9pm), is carefully calculated to maximise on the celebrity of the film director, possibly surprising viewers at finding such a big-screen name in the small-screen listings.
Stone's attempt to correct what he sees as Us-centric teaching of 20th-century history in American schools is full of arresting connections – sauerkraut was renamed liberty cabbage in the Us during the first world war and french fries became freedom fries during the "war on terror" – and the British screening of his series is subject to its own intriguing connection: this week's announcement that the American drama Bates Motel has been bought for broadcast in the UK by the Universal Channel.

Bb King, who has just turned 87, has returned home to Mississippi to play to family and friends. In the experience of a lifetime, Ed Vulliamy joins him and hears from the maestro about his rise from the cotton fields to international stardom
The fat red sun settles itself against the horizon, throwing a last, honey-sweet light through humid evening and over a small crowd on the lawn beside a railroad track that cuts through the cotton fields beyond. A quarter-moon rises and a chorus of cicadas serenades imminent twilight, now conjoined by the sound of the band; the drummer catches the backbeat and the compere announces: "How about an Indianola hometown welcome for the one-and-only King of the Blues: Bb King!"
And on he comes, to applause from people who know him well and claim him as their own – the last of the blues masters a few weeks short of his 87th birthday.

In case you haven't noticed, Spike Lee has been making the publicity rounds for his latest feature, "Red Hook Summer," which opened on Friday and took in $42,100 on four screens over the weekend. That may not sound like a lot, but it's decent business for a film with no special effects, no recognizable characters and no big-name stars. And did I mention that it's set in the projects, but doesn't use them to terrify the audience into double-locking their doors to keep the bad guys away? The Red Hook Projects, as seen in their namesake film, are a place of danger, yes, but also real beauty. It's a community of mostly poor people, struggling to find their way just like the rest of us.
The main attraction, then, is Spike. And the fact that he's going back to Brooklyn, to continue the saga he began with "She's Gotta Have It...

Chicago -- Pete Cosey, an innovative guitarist who brought his distinctive distorted sound to recordings with Miles Davis, Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters, has died, his daughter said. He was 68.
Cosey died May 30 of complications from surgery at Vanguard Weiss Memorial Hospital in Chicago, said his daughter Mariama Cosey.
Pete Cosey's musical journey began early, his daughter said, noting that Cosey's father died when he was 9 years old.
"That's how he dealt with his father's passing ... and if I had to pick one instance in his life that just really rocked his world, that was it," she said. "I think he tried to spend his time trying to communicate with my granddaddy."
In the 1960s, Cosey was a member of the studio band at Chess Records in Chicago, where he played on Waters' "Electric Mud" and Howlin' Wolf's "Howlin' Wolf Album." Cosey also worked with Etta James and Chuck Berry.
