Commissioner Maigret is continually grappling with crimes and crimes of all kinds; nothing should surprise him. Instead when Maurice Tremblet is killed, in the evening while on the bed he is intent on rubbing the soles of his feet, Maigret is impressed. Why would anyone bother to kill a humble cashier? a poor devil? But then it turns out that Tremblet had quit his job for years even though he continued his life regularly, going out in the morning, returning in the evening and taking home the salary. Maybe he wasn't a poor devil after all.

It is Christmas Eve and Mrs. Maigret is intent on the preparations, especially culinary, for the anniversary. Even the commissioner naturally thinks of spending Christmas within the home. And in fact he remains at home, but armed with the only telephone he will be able to solve a particular case: that of a little girl who, forced into bed by a fracture in the foot not far from Maigret's home, claims to have received a visit from Santa Christmas that brought her, without her parents noticing anything, a doll.
