Mike Prickett not only served as director of photography on 100 Foot Wave, but his own story is so uniquely intertwined with big-wave surfing that it is even depicted in episode five of the Emmy-nominated HBO documentary series.
“In the world of cinematography in the ocean, Mike Prickett has been at the forefront,” says big-wave pioneer and subject of the series, Garrett McNamara, during the episode. Surf cinematographer Brock Ladd goes on to describe the Dp as a “legend in the surf community.”
Prickett resides on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, and has been lensing surfing for nearly four decades while compiling credits on movies including Chasing Mavericks and Step Into Liquid. Along the way, he has developed techniques and camera systems for photographing these unrepeatable moments, and has overcome his own personal challenge. Following in the footsteps of surfing documentaries like Step into Liquid, Riding Giants and The Endless Summer, a new documentary is diving into the ocean, showing the seemingly insane thrill-seeking hobby of big-wave riding. But this time, the action will come at audiences in another dimension with Storm Surfers 3D. Not only are Tom Carroll and Ross Clark-Jones surfing legends, but they have surf forecaster Ben Matson helping them track and chase giant storm systems in order to catch the biggest and most dangerous waves. Seriously, some of this footage is breathtaking and unbelievable. It should be impressive in theaters. Here's the first trailer for the documentary Storm Surfers 3D from YouTube: Combining cutting-edge 3D technology and bravura filmmaking, Storm Surfers 3D is the ultimate big-wave thrill ride, directed by Justin McMillan and Chris Nelius.. The film follows best friends and surfing legends Tom Carroll and Ross Clarke-Jones, along with surf forecaster Ben Matson,...

Here's the Super Bowl trailer for Relativity Media's awesome looking Navy Seal film Actor of Valor. The movie is described as “a hybrid feature film based on the Seal ethos that highlights both naval special warfare capability and fleet interaction.” Co-director McCoy said, “I found the SEALs fascinating. People never know exactly how far you can push yourself, and the SEALs are a direct representation of that.”
The new film was directed by ex-stuntmen and documentary filmmakers/commercial directors Mike “Mouse” McCoy (Dust to Glory) and Scott Waugh (Step Into Liquid) and written by Kurt Johnstad (300). It stars Alex Veadov, Roselyn Sanchez, and Nestor Serrano.
I'm looking forward to seeing this movie. I think it looks pretty good despite the fact that it has no real actors in it. It's just watching real Navy SEALs in action. Check out the Super Bowl trailer below, and tell us what you think!

Relativity Media has released a new TV spot for their upcoming Navy Seal film Act of Valor. The movie may not have been made by the normal Hollywood talent, but it was made by a team of real life Navy Seals, which to me means that we are going to see some badass real-life battle action.
The movie is described as “a hybrid feature film based on the Seal ethos that highlights both naval special warfare capability and fleet interaction.” Co-director McCoy said “I found the SEALs fascinating.

This is a huge chunk of money for a film with a group of no name actors. In fact, the actors in the film are actual badass Navy SEALs. The Navy was even involved with the films production.
The film was written by 300 screenwriter Kurt Johnstad and directed by Mike "Mouse" McCoy and Scott Waugh (Step into Liquid). What may look like a recruitment film is actually a story that follows a group of SEALs charged with the mission of recovering a kidnapped CIA agent, "and in the process takes down a complex web of terrorist cells determined to strike America at all costs." This will be the first Navy Seal film to come out since Seal Team 6 took out Osama bin Laden. Even though the movie doesn't revolve around that,...

The Navy SEALs got a massive PR boost when the killing of Osama Bin Laden was announced. Not that the special forces team really needed a boost, given that the SEALs are one of the most highly-regarded military teams in the world. But the boost came regardless, and one of the aftereffects is that quite a few companies want to make movies or TV about the team and the operations it undertakes. While Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal seemed to have the jump on everyone [1] with their film that has been referred to as Kill Bin Laden (not the final title [2]), it turns out that another SEALs film has already been shot, and Relativity just bought it for an early 2012 release. (Think: President's Day.) The film is called Act of Valor (once called I Am That Man) and it stars actual Navy SEALs. Some images from set and more info are after the break.

A few weeks ago I got an invite to see a NYC test screening with just the information of Aov and it involving someone who worked on 300. Due to not normally attending these types of screenings and having absolutely zero interest upon further examination, I turned it down. A new report on Deadline and a wealth of new details are making me rethink that decision.
The film, a “mission movie involving Navy Seals,” is titled Act of Valour (or Act of Valor on IMDb) and stars actual, active duty members of United States Navy’s sea, air and land teams, while also being backed by the military. A look at what's new on DVD this week:
"A Summer in Genoa"
Directed by Michael Winterbottom
Released by Entertainment One
Of the many films Michael Winterbottom ("A Mighty Heart," "9 Songs") has directed in recent years, you wouldn't guess the one starring recent Oscar winner Colin Firth as a father who must take care of his two daughters in the wake of a car accident involving their mother (Hope Davis) would be the one to have trouble making it to the U.S. But here we are three years after "Genova," as it's known in much of the rest of the world, was shot and it's finally arrived on DVD, a mix of supernatural thriller and human drama that's actually getting reasonably good reviews upon its delayed release. Catherine Keener co-stars.

You don’t have to surf to get stoked about Dana Brown’s recent doc Highwater. There’s a lot more than epic 15-foot tubes to admire. The son of Bruce Brown who made the groundbreaking Endless Summer (1966), Brown made his mark with Step into Liquid (2003) and now turns his lens to the beaches of Oahu's North Shore during the Van Triple Crown of Surfing.
But Brown’s coverage is no blow-by-blow rundown of competitors, ratings and elimination rounds. Aside from interviews with some of the sport’s greats like eight-time World Champion Kelly Slater, the audience is also introduced to up-and-coming stars such as the young teenagers Jon-Jon Florence and Carissa Moore as well as others who have sacrificed much for their love of the sport, including shark attack victim Bethany Hamilton and Jessie Billauer, who despite his paralysis after a surfing accident, maintains a passion for the ocean.

Dana Brown ("Step Into Liquid," "Dust to Glory") grew up in the world of competitive surfing. So it's natural that as a filmmaker he should return to this scene for inspiration. His latest film focuses on the Triple Crown of pro surfing, a nearly two-month competition that takes place on the gorgeous beaches of Oahu’s North Shore. The waves that crash against this beach, we are told, are the most incredible, unpredictable, and dangerous ones in the world, a fitting setting for men and women to battle with nature with nothing but a surfboard to protect them.
After setting the scene with some incredible helicopter shots of the rest of Hawaii, the film introduces us to the heavy hitters of pro surfing off the island's North Shore: gritty underdogs, retiring old pros, a couple of preteen wunderkinds, and many eager young surfers trying to...

Big idea: Creating next-generation broadband networks -- featuring speeds up to 100 times today's standard -- to spur the coming wave of online innovation. "Being a catalyst is an ambitious goal for us," says Minnie Ingersoll, 33, about Google Fiber for Communities. "Pursuing high-speed networks that are open for third parties to offer retail service will lead to new business models. There will be new deployment techniques. Our guys are excited to dig up streets and experiment. And there will be new apps and services." Cities such as Hampton, Virginia; Greenville, South Carolina; and prototypical everytown Peoria, Illinois, have already publicly stated they're competing to be picked as test sites. "The response so far has been exciting," she says. "Even cities that have broadband are interested."

With the exception of Point Break and Surf Ninjas (that's right, I admit it) most of the truly great surfing films come in the form of documentaries like The Endless Summer and Step Into Liquid. And while Surf's Up is certainly a fine tribute to the sport, the fact that it's animated knocks it down from being a real surfing flick in the rules that I just made up. But now we're going to be riding some serious waves as Variety reports AnnaSophia Robb (Race to Witch Mountain) will star in Soul Surfer, a biopic about Bethany Hamilton, a professional surfer, who has prevailed in competitions despite losing an arm in a shark attack at age 13. Joining Robb in the Sean McNamara-directed (of Bratz: The Movie previously) surfing flick is Dennis Quaid (oddly enough not as the surfboard) as well as Helen Hunt as Hamilton's parents. Additionally, and...

NEW YORK -- On the heels of coming aboard Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, IFC Films has acquired another documentary, Step Into Liquid helmer Dana Brown's Dust to Glory. The indie banner has been on a documentary buying spree of late: The company's Metallica: Some Kind of Monster will hit theaters in the summer, and another acquisition -- the mountaineering movie Touching the Void -- was released in January and climbed to nearly $4.5 million. Dust follows off-road racing's Baja 1000, the longest continuous point-to-point race in the world across Baja California.
Step Into Liquid director Dana Brown and producers Scott Waugh and Rich Wilson have teamed with motorcycle racing phenomenon Mike "Mouse" McCoy to produce the feature-length action sports documentary Dust to Glory through their newly formed Dusted Prods. banner. Scheduled to begin principal photography later this month, the film will take audiences into the adrenaline-induced granddaddy of all off-road races, the legendary Baja 1000. Dubbed "the most famous race that no one has ever seen," the Baja 1000 is the longest point-to-point race in the world and boasts 300-400 competitors battling the desert aboard their off-road vehicle of choice -- ranging from motorcycles to Buggies to $750,000 Trophy Trucks -- as it pits man against man, man against the machine and man against nature.
