The darker side of winter tourism
eixi19 June 2002
The film is about a young woman who makes a living working as a waitress in a winter tourism region of the Austrian Alps. Not far behind the beautiful and relaxing atmosphere of "winter wonderland" lies Evi's reality of hard work and long hours in an unfriendly working environment. She finds happiness in alcohol and meaningless one-night-stands.

Only her little daughter gives her the will for ending this, but she doesn't quite succeed yet...

Quite a sad film actually, as you will notice most of the story line happens everyday in reality in thousands of villages living of tourism. Also sad to see about the results of alcohol abuse. Not a film for a night out with a date I should think...

One must not mix pleasure with responsibilities

Sabine Derflinger is one of Austria's most talented filmmakers. In most of her films one can find themes related to women and their personal as well as professional lives. She gives enough breathing space to her feminine characters so that they are able to display their strengths and weaknesses all at the same time.Vollgas is one of her most famous films which has tremendous box office potential. It is one of the few films with a feminist perspective made in Austria.Sabine Derflinger tells the story of a waitress who is not able to strike a suitable balance between her adventurous, wild work life and her duties as her housewife. It is due to her dilly dallying that her young daughter suffers as she is not able to receive all the love which her mother can give to her.In an indirect manner Sabine Derflinger has severely criticized tourism industry in Austria which has started to take its toll on the live of innocent people such as this film's leading lady. Vollgas appears as true because of its non judgmental stance. This is an element which lends credibility to the film.
