Kalpana (1948) is entirely based on Uday Shankar's personal experience in 1938 of opening the 'Uday Shankar India Cultural Centre', at Simtola in Uttarakhand Himalayas. The Centre closed after four years for want of funds, whereupon he regrouped and moved to Madras to make the film Kalpana (1948). By 1965 he had settled in Ballygunge, Kolkata opened the "Uday Shankar Center for Dance" and been awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship for lifetime contribution to Indian dance.
Included in the Criterion Collection in 2022 as part of Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Project series (box set #4). It was restored in 2012 from existing film elements from the National Film Archive of India.
