Wow, thank you Rifftrax!
jorgito200127 January 2020
I happened to be on the Rifftrax channel on PlutoTV watching Mike, Kevin & Bill riff Manos: The Hands of Fate and what followed after? Something that was deep, deep in my psyche I forgot about for years! Wow, the human mind is a mystery. I wouldve been 5 or 6 years old when this oroginally aired and remember my mom being excited about my watching it.I even remember being scared of the witch. The teenie tiny bat sneaking under the door...omg! I was watching with a HUGE doofy smile on my face the whole runtime as I felt transported back in time many many (many) Halloweens ago (my favorite time of year). That said, this aged HORRIBLY and is beyond cringy, but for nostalgic purposes like most reviews Ive read so far, it's old school, simple fun. Thank you Rifftrax crew for using what looks like an old, beat up VHS tape to riff this TV special! Definitely brought out a hidden memory & why I love Halloween so much!

It has its moments, but not too many.

Warning: Spoilers
This short was one I watched as a kid and I remember seeing it maybe one time with only a couple of scenes sticking out in my mind. Recently saw it again and watched it for nostalgia sake and to see if it was indeed the special I was thinking it was and turns out it was. Basically, a Halloween special featuring a cast of actors playing famous monsters, though only Judd Hirsch and Marriette Hartley being really noteworthy.

The story has rumors about Halloween being cancelled which upsets Count Dracula who summons all the other monsters to his castle to figure out where the rumors came from. Turns out, the witch started the rumors herself as she tires of being in Dracula's shadow and apparently she will not fly over the moon on Halloween and this somehow makes it void for some reason? Anyways, it is up to Dracula and all the other monsters to make their way to her castle to try and convince her to fly over the moon so that there may be a Halloween!

Somewhat stupid as far as plot and Judd Hirsch really hams it up in the role of Dracula. The other monsters just are bland though as only Igor really has any type of lines at all other than Dracula and the witch. Not too much effort put into the costumes either nor the story. It gets wrapped up in rather confusing fashion as these kids convince the witch to fly over the moon, but it is not shown how they got there as most of the short they are sitting at a television watching the news at their house.

So, one of those shorts you vaguely remember from childhood and then you see it and you now know it was not just a fever dream! The scene I remember most from the short is when Dracula turns into a small bat and is promptly pummeled by the witch. What I had no recollection of is the witch and Dracula disco dancing at the end! Harmless enough, but not all that great either.

I remember this dumb little family movie
stigs8419 April 2003
Lol, when I saw this movie listed on imdb.com, it made me laugh. I have this movie lying around my house somewhere, under the title "The Night Dracula Saved the World" I dont know why I watched it all the time as a little kid, I guess because it was sorta kinda funny. I laugh now thinking of the corniness of the short little crappy 70's video, like the disco dancing and the cheap special effects and the really bad acting, especially those damned kids. If you ever come across this little oddity, and I doubt you will, view it for a good laugh

Inept

I saw this special back in 1979, but at age 17 I was at least 10 years too old for it. Not that Halloween specials are known for their sophisticated humor, but this one manages to be inept even by that standard.

THAT thing won an Emmy? It must have been a very weak year. This is for you if you're so young that you think showing four actors running fast-forward is clever. Showing people repeatedly swinging on a rope unsuccessfully definitely has its limits, even for slapstick. The appearance of the little kids at the climax was especially shameless. (I know they're supposed to seem "cute" and all, but call me WC Fields.)

I know that Judd Hirsch and Mariette Hartley were talented comedians, but here those talents are definitely wasted. I must have seen a different show from what these other reviewers saw.

Urrgh.

Ach! There go my big bucks!

This one is not to be missed! So much kids TV from the 70's was beneath contempt. This little film is a gem. We snatched it off the Disney Channel in 1989 and have watched it with our kids every Halloween since. It is charming and sweet, even now that the kids are grown! Makes a great double feature with either "Mr. Boogety" and/or "Bride of Boogety"! A triple! Judd Hirsch is great Dracula! Marianne Hartley was a doll! Henry Gibson! And the dialogue! "Disco Dancing? I don't remember disco dancing!" "Teeny Tiny Bat, teeny tiny bat!" "I can see him clearly, coming through the fog!" "How many times do I have to tell you: Open at night, closed in the day!"

Only the makeup is great

Warning: Spoilers
"The Halloween That Almost Wasn't" is a 24-minute Halloween television special from over 25 years ago that actually won an Emmy in a category where it basically only went against competition that also came from this film here. But I must say the Emmy win is fine. It is among the best aspects of the film easily. The acting is okay all in all, but the script is not too great. I know it tries to be 100% comedy and never scary, so it's suitable for young audiences too, but it does rarely work as a comedy I must say. It just wasn't funny enough as a whole. This is particularly disappointing as basically all the people working on this one, be it Judd Hirsch shortly before his Oscar nomination, the other actors or the writer and director, they were all pretty experienced in the world or film when this was made. All in all, not as good of a watch as I had hoped. Thumbs down and I can't recommend it.

Awesome little show
skvanna34200016 October 2007
I remember this show as a little kid. My brother and I still do the little thing we call 'Tinie, Tiny bat, tinie, tiny bat.' It makes us laugh every time. This is a great movie for kids. They don't make them like this anymore.......

I would highly recommend this to every kid I know and adults. It has some really cute humor. Judd Hirsch is awesome..

Where can I go to buy this movie Amazon?

I did try one year to find it and they wanted around 90 bucks for it. I'm not sure I would pay that much - but I would at least pay $30.00

Does anyone have any good ideas?

You must see this.

One of the best movies bring back fond memories. I was 5 when it was re-released and it is fun to watch as a family. And although a little corny. I do believe that the whole family would enjoy watching it. It is short enough for little kids to stay interested. And it is funny for kids and teens. And brings back reminiscent times for adults. Plus you don't have to worry about what it is rated like most of the movies today. I have just recently seen it again and it is just as good as I remembered. And you will probably want to see it more then once. I know I sure did. Although now it is a bit hard to find. I would check pleases that sell used VHS. Also other places too. Since it was only once released to my knowledge.

Absolutely Hilarious!

I love this short film--it is hilarious, fun, witty, and also seems to get me excited about Halloween. Judd Hirsch is so funny, and he's a perfect Dracula. The rest of the cast is also great and they do a superb job at poking fun at the typical Hollywood monster.

This movie is a must-see, and I've loved it since I first saw it about 12 years ago.

If you ever can, see this little gem!

Warning: Spoilers
I've been watching this little movie for thirteen years (I'm that old--scary, huh?) and I love it now as much as I did when I first saw it.

The plot is very simple: Dracula calls together a meeting of the world's most famous monsters because a rumor has started that Halloween is in danger of disappearing forever. During that meeting, the Witch admits that she doesn't want to be a witch anymore and won't fly her broom over the moon at midnight on the night before Halloween. Halloween can't start if she doesn't. She will only do it if Dracula follows a list of conditions. He won't, so she won't fly over the moon. That night, Dracula and the other monsters go to her castle to try to convince her to fly over the moon. After a few hilarious "ideas" from Igor, two children show up at the castle. The girl is dressed up like the Witch and that just about breaks the Witch's heart. She will fly over the moon only if Dracula promises to throw a Disco party afterward.

Even though this special is dated, it is still very good and very funny. The acting is superb. I hope this makes it onto DVD at some point in time. Until then, I'll be happy with the old VHS tape I have.

Halloween That Almost Wasn't
cillaj77-857-13067929 September 2010
I just wanted to say that I really love this movie! I have been looking for it for a really long time. My mom went on to EBAY a couple of year ago and purchased it from this lady in Canada for $70 bucks on VHS.

I recently had a friend copy it on to a DVD. It is so awesome to have and watch anytime I want.

If any one is interested in a copy, please let me know. I am more than happy to share! I just wish they would keep these traditional movies on TV for our kids today!

Thanks,

Priscilla

It was great in the '80s, and it's still great today. Total classic!
Mr-Fusion22 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not even sure how many times I'd watched this special as a kid. Often enough to commit Dracula's mini-tirade to memory: "Eeeeegor, you did it again! How many times do I have to tell you? Keep the tomb door open at night and closed in the day. Open at night and CLOSED IN THE DAY!"

Judd Hirsch owns in this movie, and he's who I conjure whenever hearing the name Dracula (is it any wonder I'm more comically inclined rather than horror?); his facial expressions, comedic timing and willingness to play such a goofy role. But he's not backed by lightweights. Mariette Hartley plays the curmudgeonly witch to a T (her annoyance is infectious), while Henry Gibson hands up an Igor performance almost as memorable as that of Marty Feldman.

I dig the playfulness of this thing, and the movie's daffy sense of humor. It's one of those annual specials worthy of being passed down to the next generation.

Get off your asses, Disney, and give this thing a proper release.

What a great Halloween short!
Hip-Hop-Legend8 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I remember watching this as a kid! I loved it then, and I love it now. The one liners in this are great. Dracula: Soon you will grow sleepy and obey my every command. Witch: Over my dead body! Dracula: Don't be a tease! LOL! I had forgotten all about this until I stumbled across it on another website. All of the characters are great. The wolfman, the mummy, frankenstein's monster, the king of the dead, igor, and of course Dracula, and the witch. The funniest parts are the dialogue between Dracula and the witch, and Dracula and igor. Dracula to igor: Can't do me any harm huh? Who did that, termites? You have to watch to understand what I mean, but this is a great Halloween short and definitely worth a watch!

One of my favorites!

Warning: Spoilers
I found this one year after trick-or-treating. I had no idea what it was at the time, but I thought it was hilarious. Of course, I couldn't find it again. My only issue with this gem is the disco music. Dear God, help me! I also loved Henri Gibson, along with John Schuck and Jack Riley. They were great in these roles. Then, like another viewer discovered, Disney Channel did a Halloween night, probably about ten years ago. I was able to record this, along with "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" with Bing Crosby. Why these are not shown, along with "Garfield's Halloween", I'll never know. Guess the world only loves "The Great Pumpkin". I do as well, but there's more out there, people!

An Underrated Halloween Classic
crowes-1886517 October 2022
Aside from It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown there weren't a lot of Halloween staples which were required viewing for the arrival of Halloween to be official but this classic was one of those for me. It is largely forgotten and was so cheesy and goofy but also just filled with the god cheer of the time. They haven't made holiday specials like this in a very long time and I really hope this one can experience a comeback and be appreciated more than it was when it aired on network tv and had a short run on Disney. It's a lovely special from the era of highlighting what you were going to watch in the TV Guide over the next week and that era will be missed forever!
