Peter, Camilla and Eva are three of the students in the class. Peter has bad grades and often skips school. Camilla does the best she can, but things are messy at home. Eva is insecure and is looking for new social circles. Katarina, Magnus and Marianne are all teachers at the school. Katarina is appreciated by the students but not by the colleagues, Magnus thinks a tougher approach is needed and Marianne is bullied by the students. Substitute teacher Jan comes to the school for a long-term temporary position and is convinced that he can change the school from the inside.
Learning for life addresses, among other things, various conflicts that arise when everything has to be organized and controlled. The purpose is for it to give a human and personal insight into what the school looked like in the 1970s.
The series, was written and directed by Carin Mannheimer and won her the Great Journalist Award .
The series' title melody was by the rock group Motvind .
The recording took place at Nya Lundenskolan in Gothenburg with about 30 actors and about 100 young people from various schools who sacrificed time from their summer vacation in 1976.
The series received a lot of attention and was debated. Parents and teachers' unions believed that it was an accurate picture of the school world that was reflected, while politicians, among others, were furious at how the school was portrayed. With its 3.5 million viewers per episode , it is the most watched TV series in Sweden of all time, and has not been repeated after 1977 . The series was released on DVD in the spring of 2008.
