Japanese life and death philosophical offering
Bofsensai13 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Bookended with a 'life and death' philosophical musing, apparently instigated from the '95 Tokyo subway gas attack, this is a sorta dogme style made in what is expected of the traditional Japanese 'Pink' cinema genre: that is: plenty of sexual encounters, in which the women cast seem to perform particularly convincingly - almost in a sorta oriental Larry Clark 'Kid's like way - and especially so of lead actress Yemeka Sasaki (as Haruka), and covers your typically disturbing Japanese preponderance to associate death with sex, no doubt following that culture's (or director, T. Zeze's?) apparent suppressed male terror of its women's sexuality power over them.

Along with some Lynchian / Donnie Darko like aspects (perhaps rabbit's heads have some special meaning in Japanese culture) keep the interest in its hand held hazy dogme style camerawork, which in its use as unobtrusiveness (note how many times a foreground item bisects the scene), but also interspersed at other times with direct to camera 'interviews', gives this what would otherwise be a quite tedious, dull watch, a surprisingly intriguing frisson.

N.B. Recommended to double bill with another 'Tokyo' pink genre, the more known 'Tokyo Decadence', which despite its fame (notoriety) and far higher production values, this lower values dogme offering is, ironically, perhaps more engaging.

WHAT IF DAVID LYNCH MADE A PINKU !!
samxxxul28 June 2020
This experimental film from Takahisa Zeze explores love, life, sex, and death throughout the course of five explicit vignettes told through the rules of postmodern cinema, with a very complex script narrated through a non-linear interlocking montage. All the beauty of Tokyo X Erotica is also due to the ambiguity of its characters, appearing at first as clichés, to become more and more intriguing and indefinable. The atmosphere created is the very meaning of scintillating and suspense levels are to the maximum. "Tokyo X Erotica" appears purposeful as a realistic excavation and examination of disconcerting characters in threatening situations - the utmost dregs of society and those affected by them which is not often witnessed in motion pictures. A perfect blend of early Japanese Roman Porno with Lynch and Junichi Suzuki which is only for the acquired taste.

..apocalyptic, cyber punk extravaganza..
christopher-underwood29 June 2005
Short but barely pausing for breath, this apocalyptic, cyber punk extravaganza is fun all the way. Bit of politics, some philosophy, lots of death and dying but mainly vigorous and sexy sex. Rock music, incest, bunny costumes plus Superman as anti hero, it's all here so if you are looking for a lively exciting one hour + you couldn't do much better. It goes without saying as a bonus that this film could have been made nowhere else but in the good old land of the rising sun. Did I mention the filling of a water pistol with the boyfriend's cum in her vagina and firing it at his face? Now there's something you don't get with Spielberg & Co!

Good example of low-budget Pinku Eiga

Bare but not repulsive.

Sexy but not seductive.

Erotic but not sinful.

Reality deconstructed to form a surrealistic matrix, filled with eroticas anatomized in the point of view of death, eternity and samsara.

Intriguing short stories of various people interweaved with very nice and smooth hyperlink plots, edited in a one-of-a-kind style.

Music is simple but touching and properly arranged to fit the theme, the general feel, and the title -- Tokyo X Erotica.
