After highlighting the best films of the year thus far, it’s time to turn our attention to the fall. While Venice and Telluride will get things going, the biggest seasonal event is easily the Toronto International Film Festival. With hundreds of titles from around the globe on its slate, many of our yearly favorites debut there and we’ll be covering in-depth yet again this year. To get a preview of what to expect, they’ve announced their initial line-up of titles.
The slate includes Tom Ford‘s Nocturnal Animals, Denis Villeneuve‘s Arrival, Damien Chazelle‘s La La Land, Kim Ji-woon‘s The Age of Shadows, Ewan McGregor‘s American Pastoral, the Miles Teller-led Bleed for This, Denial starring Rachel Weisz, Christopher Guest‘s Mascots, Werner Herzog‘s Salt and Fire, the Michael Fassbender-led Trespass Against Us, Una starring Rooney Mara, Rob Reiner‘s Lbj, A Monster Calls,...

I'll announce 2012's nominees the second the write-ups are done (working on them this week). But until then another listy flashblack to year's past here at The Film Experience. My opinions have changed somewhat over the years (as many opinions should if we continue to evolve) and perhaps I'll detail which changes those were in the future but mostly I like to think of Awards, both mine and other people's as time capsules of What We Valued At That Moment.
So here you go...

I can’t decide if last night’s Oscars were a disaster or not. Sure, I laughed my ass off. But at what cost? Was most of the entertainment laughing with the ceremony, or did I find it so enjoyable because it was such a mess?
To settle this debate within myself, I’ve decided to compile a list of last night’s highlights, spanning the entire ceremony, but not in exact order. Then, I’m going to decide what’s positive and what’s negative by indicating a “plus” or a “minus” to a general quality index. It’s a bit like Jeff Bayer’s “Oscar Bowling,” except that it makes no sense at all.
And the winning/losing moments are …
James Franco and Anne Hathaway brought a “young” aspect to the Oscars, but I wouldn’t say it was “hip.” After their hilarious introduction video, the duo hosted...

There's a certain fever moviegoers get while they're at the Sundance Film Festival (in the case of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, that's literally so). It feels like the center of the Universe while you're there; we fail to realize that the rest of the world barely cares because "Two and a Half Men" is still on, or the NFL playoffs are in full swing. The Sundance buzz rarely translates outside of Park City. It may feel like the best the year has to offer in film, and when you walk out of certain movies, you may even have the sense that it's going to take the world by storm, that a few of them might part the red sea of Hollywood formula, that America will finally stand up and take notice of something creative and original and bold.
But it never happens. Or, rarely so. Actual box-office hits, even modest ones like Garden State,...
