The one thing that Academy Award haters and lovers can agree on is the long and fascinating history of Oscar snubs. It’s the “Predator handshake” topic that brings us all together. It happens every year: the wrong movie wins a certain award or fails to secure the nomination it deserves. Some would say it’s a big part of the awards show experience.
Every now and then, though, the Academy Awards go above and beyond by implementing a “blanket snub.” It’s one thing for a great movie or actor to not get the win or nomination they’ve earned in the eyes of theater audiences. It’s quite another to realize that there have been numerous all-time great films throughout history that didn’t even get a single Oscar nomination, much less an Oscar win.
But let’s go one step further than that. We’re not going...

While the nominations for the 2020 Oscars are still two months away, the race for Best International Feature Film (formerly Best Foreign Language Film) is quietly heating up. And in a year with a record number of female-directed submissions, the Netherlands’ “Instinct,” directed by Halina Reijn (“Valkyrie”), is contributing some provocative flair. After keeping winter at bay as Melisandre in HBO’s TV hit “Game of Thrones,” Carice van Houten stars in Reijn’s directorial debut as Nicoline, a highly experienced psychotherapist who starts a new job at a penal institution. At the center of the storyline is her complicated relationship with one of her patients, Idris (Marwan Kenzari), a serial sex offender who is on the verge of completing his rehabilitative treatment.

He's really embracing daddy duty! Jeremy Vuolo posted the sweetest photo with his baby girl Felicity on Tuesday, August 7, and fans can't stop gushing over how cute the daddy-daughter duo looks. "Look who joined me for Ot Studies w/ Dr. Essex..." the father of one captioned the precious shot. However, fans have also noticed something else that they're not exactly finding endearing. Though watching a video lecture with Felicity in his arms means new dad gets to spend a little extra time with his daughter, Jeremy's holding his baby facing toward the computer — and her eyes are clearly glued to the screen. Look who joined me for Ot Studies w/ Dr. Essex... || @mastersseminary || A post shared by Jeremy Vuolo (@jeremy_vuolo) on Aug 7, 2018 at 11:05am Pdt It may be a cute pic, but fans were concerned that being so near to the computer screen may not be great for Felicity's eyes.

Getting 12 kids (under the age of eight!) to smile for a photo is no easy feat. Last month, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar sat down with their grandkids to snap a sweet picture together, and although it may have looked serene, it was anything but! Luckily, their daughter, Jill, is always willing to spill a good family secret — and that's exactly what she did when she shared a behind-the-scenes video from the photo shoot. The former Counting On star took to YouTube to post the 19-second clip on Aug. 3, and it's, um, interesting. "Oh, my goodness!" new mom Joy-Anna Duggar said, as dozens of people stood around making animal noises. Yes, animal noises. The photo-taking was so chaotic, in fact, that Jessa Duggar was spotted in the background of the Instagram snap trying to keep her son from falling. Several eagle-eyed fans noticed it too, and one commented at the time,...

When it comes to getting courtship proposals from their fans, the Duggars have plenty of experience. After all, one look at their Instagram comments reveals all the viewers at home who are volunteering to date the TLC reality stars — especially Jeremiah Duggar, one of the twins and the member of the Counting On family who can count the most fans in his corner. But it turns out that getting tons of courtship, engagement, and marriage proposals from their fans isn't anything new for Jim Bob Duggar's family. In fact, the patriarch has been fielding requests ever since they first started appearing regularly on TV in Season 1 of 19 Kids and Counting (though they only had 17 kids at the time). In an episode from 2008, back when Josh Duggar had just driven down to propose to his now-wife, Anna Duggar, Jim Bob and his wife Michelle chatted with the cameras about when...

AMSTERDAM -- Rutger Hauer and Carice van Houten will lead the cast of Oscar-nominated director Paula van der Oest's (Zus and Zo) latest film, the biopic Smoke and Ochre.
German actor Sebastian Koch, the real life partner of Van Houten, whom she met on the set of Blackbook, also will join the cast.
The film, to be shot in the second half of 2008, deals with the life of South African poet Ingrid Jonker, who committed suicide near Capetown in 1965. Jonker was a fierce critic of censorship during apartheid.
For Hauer, it will be his third recent acting job in the Netherlands. He recently finished shooting a cameo role for Bride Flight by Ben Sombogaart (Twin Sisters), and will lend his voice to the experimental feature Oogverblindend by Cyrus Frisch.

AMSTERDAM -- Rutger Hauer has signed up to star in the Dutch film Bride Flight, the new film from Oscar nominee Ben Sombogaart (Twin Sisters).
The film marks a return to Dutch cinema after more than a decade for Hauer, who splits time between Hollywood and the Netherlands.
The 6.4 million euro ($9.52 million) feature is produced by Amsterdam-based IdtV Film BV and Samsa Film Luxembourg. The production, being shot in New Zealand, deals with the story of three women who meet a mysterious man during the historic bridal flight between London and New Zealand in 1953.
Bride Flight was the name given by the media to a KLM flight that carried 40 Dutch immigrants to New Zealand to join their fiances there.

Most awards, however, went to the family-drama Tussenstand (Half Time), directed by Mijke de Jong. The film won best screenplay, best sound and best actress for Elsie de Brauw. Tussenstand, which received its world premiere this summer at the Locarno Film Festival, also received the Dutch Critics' Award.
Peter Greenaway received best screenplay for Nightwatching, a conspiracy-theory investigation involving Rembrandt's painting, The Night Watch. The film, also produced by Kasander Film Company, additionally won the Golden Calf for best production design. The best actor award went to Marcel Hensema for playing the manager of Dutch rock legend Herman Brood in the biopic Wild Romance.
Rutger Hauer was one of the Dutch stars who handed out the prizes during the closing ceremony.

AMSTERDAM -- Mijke de Jong's family film Bluebird, has been picked as the official Dutch contender for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2006 Academy Awards, selection committee Holland Film announced Wednesday. The movie, awarded a Glass Bear in the children's section of this year's Berlin International Film Festival, tells the story of a 13-year-old girl who is pestered by her schoolmates. The events have a dramatic effect on her private life. Bluebird has been presented at several international festivals, including Toronto. The Dutch are traditionally one of the first territories to announce their candidate for the foreign language Oscar. Previous Dutch winners in the section are Marleen Gorris' Antonia's Line in 1996 and Mike van Diem's Karakter in 1998. Two years ago, Twin Sisters, directed by Ben Sombogaart, received a nomination.
