Among the funniest things I've ever seen
politian26 October 2005
This film has a nervous energy that springs from the opening moment and doesn't stop until somewhere in the last third. Dazzling narrative technique, nearly always confusing you at the start of a scene, but somehow moving the story forward at the same time. The characters in the small village are wonderfully flexible - it's almost as if they change as the film's frenetic comedy and absurd plot demand. There is a sombre undertone as well, and it's that that makes some of the moments of resolution in the film somewhat awkward, as if the seriousness were being shoehorned into a farce. This will either infuriate or drive you into gales of exhausting laughter.

Original surprise
Enchorde10 December 2003
One of very few Swedish comedies that I really enjoyed. Instead of (like most Swedish comedies) putting someone through purely embarrassing moments and believing that everyone finds that funny, this movie relies on surprising twists and turns and a witty funny dialogue. In addition a mystery is resolved. Erik returns home when he finds out that his sister Sussie is missing. In his search for her more and more childhood friends get involved in this story. As we get to see the end first, the story then jumps back and forth in time to slowly resolve the plot. This enables the movie to take very surprising and funny twists.

As mentioned, a great dialogue, extra credit to whoever wrote that and to whoever created the different characters. Good acting, funny plot. Doesn't get very much better.

Nice and relaxing

I stopped watching "Slim Susie" after about 10 minutes in order to get my boyfriend to watch it with me. The first 10 minutes I was laughing continuously and couldn't stop. I have heard about "Slim Susie", but the last few years of Swedish comedy has been kind of boring. The kind of movies where you almost fall asleep because they are all the same and have similar endings, but "Slim Susie" is not. Quite many of the actors are new faces to me. But in this case I think that was more positive than negative. I can't think of a better movie to watch when it's raining outside and you need some fun. This is it, you have found the right movie! Really, I have not seen anything this funny since 1980s. And the best is that Bengt Alsterlind from (Hajk) has a part in "Slim Susie". This movie really shows the Swedish small town humor and when the acting seems bad, remember: I think it was meant that way. I am happy to say that "Slim Susie" is now among my DVD-collection!

Black comedy with sad undertones
BeneCumb15 May 2013
Alienation from close people, frequent search for something big and different, worship of money, and downgrade of townships are common issues in everyday life in the Western world. Slim Susie shows those and similar topics via "fun-house mirror" and odd personalities capable of commit felonies, if necessary. Village and small town types are often funny for outsiders as their world of thinking is totally different plus they often stick to their "pleasant" past. The director and co-writer Ulf Malmros has depicted the phenomena in a skillful manner, and his selection of character actors (e.g. Tuva Novotny, Lotta Tejle, Michael Nyqvist, Lena Dahlman) provides the film with additional value. Perhaps the course of action is not always smooth and some scenes seem arid, but the overall script is wittily constructed - with some patterns from independent British and US films.

The film is definitely for you if you like crazy crime comedies with stylish types and background.

The funniest film you've never seen.

Warning: Spoilers
Sweedish comedy gold. It was funny, pretty, and fast paced. This Twin Peakeque little Sweedish, town full of oddballs; manic depressive police chiefs, amateur film makers, drug addicts, giants, etc, yields up a murder and conspiracy. Well worn territory, but never worn so well as here. Perspectives and chronology jump around as with Ritche and Tarantino, who are being subtly parodied, however this is, as much if not more, of a film about the contradictory impulses involved in "going home" than it is, a tour through small town's underbelly. The soundtrack is mostly bouncing indie pop, which helps keep interest during the camera's many first person drives through the city. I haven't been as pleasantly surprised by a comedy like this in a long time. Anyone interested in a fun, whimsical, and inventive good time, see here.

Laughable countryside
stensson31 October 2003
There have for the last decade been quite a lot of Swedish films about the Swedish world outside Stockholm. The stockholmers have had a lot to laugh about. Little is known here about how the smalltown Swedish inhabitants take that.

But "Smala Sussie" ("Slim Sussie" in English) is funny in more ways than being a hillbilly comedy. The acting by young Björn Starrin, Jonas Rimeika and Tuva Novotny is great. There might be a place for a discussion whether murder and using drugs really is a funny subject. Here it is so however, although everything is far from the Tarantino treatment.

But you have to be Swedish to appreciate this. Or maybe Scandinavian.

had me laughing the whole way
Rucker16 June 2004
I saw this movie a week or two ago at the Seattle intl film festival and it was one of my favorites.

The characters were all very funny in a clumsy and idiosyncratic sort of way. Much like a Coen bros. movie plot they are a bit too dumb and small-town-naive to pull off their objectives without screwing themselves up, but that's what makes it funny, right?

The dialog was great as well, with a few funny Tarantino-esqe side narratives. In fact, the screenplay also reminded me of Tarantino or Guy Ritchie films as it jumped around chronologically and repeated some of the story from different characters' perspectives.

I imagine if you like those directors (well, who doesn't?), you'd find this one very worth your while as well (although a bit less stylized and certainly less violent then most of Tarantino's work which I happen to think is a plus!)

Mad hillbilly Swedish crime comedy
m671655 October 2005
This movie is for people who like to laugh at drug use and abuse, pornography, profanity, and violence. It does portray drug use in a rather conservative way, that is: dangerous fun that will get you into trouble. On the other hand, its manic accelerated humor might actually make it look like this advice against drugs is not to be taken too seriously.

The story starts with a brother coming back to his hometown to look for his little sister. He soon discovers that while he was away in the big city, something went weird back home. His sister is missing and no one seems to know or care about it. His crazy friends are even crazier now, and he quickly finds out there's some strange stuff going on. The quick twists and turns make this movie quite funny and the music adds up to the ironies and just plain insanity of it all.

In short: A mad hillbilly Swedish comedy. Good show!

Simply brilliant!
jacobsteel26 September 2004
I don't know where to start. Acting? Dialogue? Characters? Great dead-pan acting. Excellent fast-and-funny-as-hell dialogue. Superb misfit-crazy-characters. This film's got it all. That it's spoken in the Swedish accent of Värmländska just makes a great film even better. In fact, don't waste your time reading this. Go down to your local rental and get it. Pronto!

Hint: you might like this movie a lot better if you're something of a movie buff. Tons of reference humor. The good sort. ;-)

Was this suppose to be good?
dying_fetus14 March 2006
Was this movie suppose to be good, or do you have to live in Värmland to appreciate it? 'Cause I found it to be way over hyped on all plans, the only good thing about it, was the actor performance by Kjell Bergqvist.

It has come to my mind that Ulf Malmros is way over credited for his movies, he is definitely not as good as some people portrait him to be.

This movie is NOT for everyone, be sure you live in Värmland or close to it, so you can relate to all the bums who seems to be living there (met a friend where I study, who told me it was really like that where she comes from, Torsby). I don't hope anyone foreigner watches this movie and think the Swedes are such bums as they are portraited as in the movie.

Well above average!!!
idgleep8 October 2006
Absolutely great movie. In the style of "Pulp Fiction" or "Trainspotting" (sort of). Very pulpy and alive. Hilarious full characters and wonderfuls plot development with plenty of hilarious lines and laughable twists and turns! RENT IT!! You won't be sorry.

When I see most movies I feel like I can figure out the plot within moments. I always have the feeling that I know what is going on next and I am usually right, but this movie was different. It kept me on my toes and had a great presentation ( original adaptation of an old standard). "Smala Susie" is definitely one of my new top ten movies of all time. I rented it and have bought it shortly afterwards!!

Well done!
joey_stockholm4 October 2003
Personally, I'm not very fond of Swedish movies because of the bad acting and stiff dialogue, but Smala Sussie really did it. It was witty, original (but still had some similarities to the Swedish movie kopps), and very well made.

It's pure Swedish entertainment in a small farmervillage, where Sussie has disappeared. Her brother, who lives in Stockholm, hitchhikes to Värmland, where she lives to find his sister. during this "hunt", he finds out a lot of weird things about his childhood friends and that "Smala(Slim) Sussie" isn't the innocent obedient "miss motor-girl" she used to be.

I think the whole film is pure entertainment with a bit of Swedish maffia and reality action. All of the movie characters are very well played, and I am really satisfied with the dialogues.

I really recommend it.

Görbra!!

Good entertainer
arun-venmelil3 December 2006
Hi,

The movie slim Susie is very interesting.when Erik (Jonas Rimeika) comes home from Stockholm in search of his little sister Susie, he finds everything changed in him home town(it means mind of his friends and other known people).Nobody didn't help him to find his sister they used to tell him different stories. But he came to know his sister became a gangster. This is the first time i am watching a Swedish movie.I like the acting Jonas and Tuva.A far cry from the Sweden of Ingmar Bergman, SLIM SUSIE (SMALA SUSSIE) presents a small town world of drugs, crime, and pornography. Erik (Jonas Rimeika) returns to his home town of Bruket after living in Stockholm. He has come to investigate the disappearance of his sister Susie, a former beauty queen whom he is quite fond of. But as he begins to dig into the underbelly of the city, he discovers a world of crime and seedy affairs, and is shocked to discover that his cute little sister is involved in this sordid underworld. SLIM SUSIE is a black comedy that reverses the common "corruption in the big city" theme by looking at the criminal elements in a small town.

regards Arun

Masterpiece.

This is probably the funniest movie I have ever seen. But it's not only funny. It's intelligent in it's absurdity. It's beautifully concieved, acted, shot and edited. It probably helps if you're swedish and can get all the nuances and stereotypes, but anyone can enjoy it. I can't get enough of this film. Epic entertainment.

Semi-successful fake energy
Brevity5 September 2005
In the cinema world, there aren't many more irritating things than a film pretending to be bursting with energy. Why am I saying this here, you ask. Well, I answer, halfway through one (read: me) grows a bit numb of all this trickery. And before you draw any faulty conclusions: I like this film.

On the bright side, the look is a breath of fresh air for a Nordic film. Kjell Bergqvist is good, and expectedly so, I gather from his history. The humour works often, the deadpan parts especially. ("The ending of Pulp..." Clever in an incidental way, and in an intentional one too, I presume. Funny in any case.)

But there are the flashback-often-within-flashback structure, characters that are, like, so cuhrayzeee (including the "film buff" of whom I shan't say a word though was going to), the would-be edgy restlessness and in-your-face movie references that are bound to annoy some and be of excellence to some. It almost ceases to interest "one" during the final half, or, in other words already said, me grows a bit numb of it.

Those who think "Chain of Fools" is brilliant (and golly, there are those) will probably find this very appealing. Nevertheless (notice the tone), this works quite sufficiently, and any non-realistic Nordic film is of course always welcome. And just to clarify things: I like this.

Quentin Malmros strikes back
Peaks27 May 2004
Teresa Fabik (Hip Hip Hora!) recently complained about how no Swedish filmmakers dared to do something really twisted. I am sure she hasn't seen Smala Sussie.

What we're talking about is basically a Swedish Pulp Fiction, only better. And what it lacks in violence, it makes up in clever dialogue.

Great comedy is a rare talent. Because it isn't what you say, but rather how you say it, that is important. I'm not sure that non-Swedish viewers will be as pleased as I am, because a lot of the subtle humour is lost between the subtitles. I hope, however, that nobody fails to notice the wonderful performance by Björn Starrin (Pölsa). Like a few others of the cast, Björn is not a professional actor. Smala Sussie is in fact his first movie experience ever. Yet he pulls off one of the funniest performances I've seen in a long, long time. Björn very much deserved the Guldbagge-nomination he didn't get.

Pölsa's words of wisdom have in fact become some kind of religion to me. A religion where hon med fönen is the son, Pölsa the father, and Uffe Malmros the holy creative spirit.

Warning: Spoilers
I dont know a shred of Swedish but it turns out one doesnt need to know it to enjoy the movie. Although the plot got completely clear to me after the reviews I read here, but who cares as long the movie is funny (really funny, I mean) and all the scenes live out.

All the actors did a great job, (I cant comment on dialogues :-( but songs from Polsa were hilarious and so was the police officer.

There is pornography and drugs involved, but to make the scenes more abruptly funny, For ex, when Polsa is introduced first.

What I did found out when I watched the movie was that Sussie was murdered and who killed her was revealed in the end. Lot of funny incidents in between.

I will buy this movie's DVD.

Mash-up of Repo Man, Pulp Fiction, & Flanders, but in a good way
pontifikator13 August 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This is a punk movie directed by Ulf Malmros. It starts at the end and loops around in fits and starts till you get all the details filled in.

Starring Tuva Novotny in the title roll and Jonas Rimeika as her brother Erik, this Swedish film takes place in a small town where the movie theater shows films that have already come out on VHS. Erik's descriptions of small-town life are funny because they're all true.

I won't discuss the plot because it gives things away. But the pleasure in this movie is in the details. The soundtrack reminds me of "Repo Man," and the details of hick town life ring absolutely true. It's basically a mash-up of "Repo Man" where things happen to punk background music and generic heroin -- er, beer -- and "Pulp Fiction" where things happen out of sequence, and "Flanders" (directed by Bruno Dumont) where things happen in a really depressing corner of the world. But "Slim Susie" is funny. I just sat there laughing as Erik told his disjointed story, waiting as all the pieces fell gradually into place.
