Almost a classic, nostalgic romance from Raven & Randy
Pretty much forgotten, "April in January" is an odd romantic movie (video, actually) that captivated me, but had me wishing it were better. As Peter Finch might have said in "Sunday, Bloody Sunday", better half a loaf than none.
DVD has some confusing elements worth mentioning. First off, the cover girl is a beautiful picture of Star E. Knight, and IMDb listed her in the title role of April (I've submitted a correction right now). But Ava Vincent, equally beautiful but a completely different type, is April and Star is merely her niece in a nice supporting bit. The fact that April is Ava's real name should have given the guesswork submitter to IMDb of this misinformation pause.
Also, the credits call the show "Raven Touchstone's 'April in January'". This possessive credit for a writer is relatively rare: in the '70s there were several movies that gave it to pop novelists of the time like Jacqueline Susann and Sidney Sheldon, but generally film is a director's medium. If he'd lived to do his dream project, for example, it would be David Lean's "Nostromo", not Joseph Conrad's "Nostromo" on the silver screen.
Structure begins as an homage to that romantic play & film of yore "Same Time Next Year", as we have a montage of April and Jerry (played by director Randy Spears) meeting every couple of years from 1992 through 2002, when the feature was shot, always on January 15th.
Turns out they are both adulterous lovers, cheating on their spouses. Yet the show is pure nostalgia, reminiscences of the past. Touchstone's script is one of her better ones, using flashbacks organically to tell the story and set the mood.
Aforementioned Star E. Knight pops up in flashback as a busty, overage teenie bopper, bopped in her bedroom by big-dicked Lee Stone. In this scene his cock reminded me of the legendary '70s cult figure Tony Perez, who graced a few Roberta Findlay films (like "Anyone But My Husband") with his huge curved dick. Stone has trouble getting hard this time, but still manages to service Star in a strong opening sex scene.
Evan Stone does the honors as part of a threesome with Dillon Day, humping Shayla LaVeaux on a staircase. This scene has an unusual use of prop which ties in repeatedly with the film's main nostalgia theme. Randy plays jazz flute (as an avocation) and his instrument is used by Shayla to masturbate unhygienically before the boys service her. Same flute reappears in the final scene as a nostalgic artifact that is part of April & Jerry's pact together. Finally, end credits finish comically with "No musical instruments were harmed in the making of this motion picture" satirizing the usual dumb disclaimers.
Big dicks are a central motif of Spears' casting, almost as if he put the word out that all his male co-stars had to exceed his own significant dimensions. So Julian portraying April's philandering husband Rick brings his massive member to bear on a hot threesome with deep-throating Kate Frost and my personal fave Kelsey Heart. Terrific femme casting also throws in the great Lesley Zen and Sunrise Adams in supporting parts.
Perhaps too sentimental for hardened modern audiences, this clearly Couples feature has its heart in the right place and is both arousing and entertaining. In a mainstream effort (see: Nicholas Sparks crap) there would have been some fatalities or at least a lingering illness or two plus dollops of fantasy/coincidence to yank at the heart strings, but Raven and Spears' more level-headed approach appealed to me.
