You probably cringe at the thought of hearing about a movie from a group of comedians coming out with a slasher film, right? Well, let me just say that horror comedies weren’t typically prevalent back when horror had the Carpenters, Cravens, Romeros, and Cronenbergs slashing about in Hollywood. Everything was serious in tone and brought the stuff made of nightmares. You had your infamous slasher icons like Michael, Freddy, Jason, and even Chucky. You also had horror movie monsters like The Thing, The Great White Shark from Jaws, Brundlefly, Godzilla, and even Tremors. But then, as we entered a new millennium, Horror started to ease up on the tension and seriousness, in exchange for some quick wit and laughs. Horror brought in a new style into its genre with comedic undertones which was a great opening for some new films in the pipeline to help branch horror into unfamiliar territory.

I have an opinion: "Slasher" is better than "American Horror Story."
Maybe that's not so controversial to say in 2023, when the popular horror anthology series created by Ryan Murphy hasn't had a good season in almost five years, and hasn't had a great one in over 10. "AHS" premiered in 2011, the same year that the sci-fi/technology-run-amok anthology series "Black Mirror" premiered. Curiously, though "Black Mirror" was just as popular, and was covered as furiously as "AHS" was in its prime, its influence on subsequent sci-fi visions seems to have jumped mediums to film. One can imagine pressing play on a new season of "Black Mirror" and watching films like "Ex-Machina," "The Circle," and "Vivarium," were a few minutes shaved off each.
"AHS," however, spawned a veritable renaissance in horror anthology series, from HBO's "Room 104," to Hulu's "Castle Rock," to Syfy's "Channel Zero." Before "AHS," you'd have to...

In most versions of the classic 1831 Victor Hugo tale, The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, the female protagonist is Esmeralda, a French Romani girl who is so beautiful that every major male character in the story either wants to marry her or seduce her. (She’s also only 16 in the novel—a book from over 200 years ago). For all her kindness and compassion, Esmeralda is basically treated terribly throughout the story and finally ends up hanged for a crime she didn’t commit, just as she reunites with her long-lost birth mother.
Quasi, a satirical new take on the story from the Broken Lizard crew (Super Troopers), has a decidedly different view of its female lead. Directed by Broken Lizard’s Kevin Heffernan and written by him and the rest of the team—Steve Lemme, Jay Chandrasekhar, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske—the film dispenses with the tragic Esmeralda in favor of...

Whenever people whine about movies that "couldn't be made today," they're usually referring to comedy films with a grossly outdated sense of humor or storylines that are blatantly discriminatory. Seldom are they referring to the truly ridiculous swings of comedy films made from the 1970s-1990s, a style that has mostly dissolved into our collective memories and only reappears when some brave soul makes an absurd laugh riot like "Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar."
The sad result of every blockbuster franchise slowly attempting to push us into a nostalgia-mad monoculture has been a lack of weirdo cinema. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of folks out there making unique films, but they're typically released independently and without the marketing budget or publicity they deserve. This makes greenlighting offbeat comedies a risky move for studios and denies audiences fresh, experimental comedy adventures. The Broken Lizard comedy troupe...

A colleague of mine, Marc Edward Heuck, once compared the films of the Broken Lizard comedy troupe to 7-Eleven hot dogs. The comparison was meant to be favorable. In both cases, the thinking went, the artisans in question know full well that they are not offering haute cuisine. Instead, the consumer is getting something efficiently constructed, barely flavorful enough, and perfect for a night when the edibles hit a little harder than expected. Broken Lizard's films have never elevated beyond the realm of raunchy, frat boy-style chuckle-fests, but have possessed just enough zingers, oddball gags, and precision-strike profanity to entrench themselves in the friendly cult trench inside the human brain. They possess an affable, thrown-off quality that makes them weirdly appealing, even as the jokes periodically fall flat.
Their newest film, "Quasi," directed by Kevin Heffernan, and written by the entire troupe is a "Carry On"-style sendup of Victor Hugo...

Twenty-five years ago, before they made their seminal cop comedy "Super Troopers," comedy troupe Broken Lizard were tossing around ideas based on a character who was a lovable loser who managed to become a hero. Fast-forward to today, and those ideas have solidified in the form of "Quasi," a satirical take on "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" that traps hunchback Quasimodo (Steve Lemme) in a battle between the King of France (Jay Chandrasekhar) and the Pope (Paul Soter). If you ever wanted to see the guys behind "Beerfest" and "Club Dread" tackle medieval history with their unique brand of sweet stoner humor, then "Quasi" is the flick for you, and it's hitting Hulu on April 20, 2023, just in time for the holiest of pot-smoking holidays.

As one of the weirder “back to school” seasons in living memory rolls out, Hulu is heading back to school in its own way for September 2020.
The biggest Hulu original arriving to the streaming services stream this month is season 2 of coming-of-age comedy Pen15…which of course stars two adults who have already come of age playing their middle school selves.
Speaking of middle school, perhaps the biggest non-original addition to the Hulu library this month is the arrival of all The Twilight Saga movies on September 1. That should prove to be a real nostalgia trip for interested parties. Other library titles of note include Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, The Terminator, and 2019’s Judy on September 25.
Bookending Hulu’s originals this month is another intriguing comedy, Woke. This series will star Lamorne Morris as a Black cartoonist who gets an unexpected wakeup call.

It might still be six weeks until October, but horror movies are a year-round joy, and several new genre titles are making their way to Hulu next month.
An American Haunting is one of several cinematic takes on the Tennessee legend of the Bell Witch, switching between the 21st and 19th centuries as a teenager experiences the same trauma as another young girl far in the past, which may or may not be caused by witchcraft and a ghostly apparition.
Best known as the team behind anarchic comedy Super Troopers, Broken Lizard also took a far less successful stab at slasher movies with Club Dread, adding to the post-Scream glut of the subgenre’s resurgence with a comedic tale of a serial killer stalking the staff of an island holiday resort.

Steve Lemme and Kevin Heffernan of the Broken Lizard comedy troupe have forged a strong name for themselves in the comedy world. The collective started as a NYC-based sketch group, but slowly parlayed their talents to the big screen. Many people still regard Broken Lizard’s Super Troopers to be their strongest feature, but over the years they’ve put out a number of memorable, irreverent comedies like Beerfest and Club Dread. Lemme and Heffernan’s latest efforts have taken them over to television with TruTV’s Tacoma Fd. The hilarious firefighter series is well in production on their second season, but just because they’ve found success on TV doesn’t mean that they’ve turned their backs on cinema. Quite the contrary.

I’m pretty much an easy mark for slasher movies, especially ones that take place at a summer camp. There’s something so wholesome and retro about counselors getting picked off by a masked killer that it always warms my heart. And because I love the slasher genre so dearly, any film that dares to offer a deconstruction on the subgenre piques my curiosity. And I’m here to tell you that in spite of the humor mostly falling a little flat for me, the slasher stuff in You Might Be the Killer works like gangbusters with some crunchy, wet practical kills that keep the blood flowing throughout.
Based in part on a hilarious Twitter thread (what a time to be alive) between genre writers Sam Sykes and Chuck Wendig, You Might Be the Killer follows Sam, played by Fran Kranz, who is the owner of the summer camp where...

With Roseanne back on the air after 20 years, and shows and films like Stranger Things, It and Ready Player One relying so heavily on their nostalgia factor, it’s not too surprising that we got a second Super Troopers. 17 years ago, the Broken Lizard troupe came out of nowhere, landing a deal with Fox Searchlight, grossing an unbelievable amount of money, and creating a cult hit in the process. Much of their charm feels reminiscent to that of Monty Python’s. But just as a second Holy Grail would impair the impact of the first, Super Troopers 2 has little worth laughing at other than a couple of retold jokes.
There’s no doubt in my mind that Super Troopers could have become this generation’s Police Academy. However, Jay Chandrasekhar and the rest of the Broken Lizard boys extinguished that fire when they abandoned these stoner policemen to make...

April 20, recognized among marijuana users as the international holiday of 4/20, falls on a Friday this year, which turns out to be the perfect release date for Fox Searchlight’s “Super Troopers 2,” the long awaited sequel to the 2001 stoner-movie classic “Super Troopers.” It will open wide on 2,400 screens.
“Fox Searchlight chose 4/20 as the release date,” director Jay Chandrasekhar says. “It tested better than any of the movies we’ve ever made before. There’s real enthusiasm at Fox over this film.”
That’s not often the case with so-called stoner movies, which have endured waves of acceptance and industry reticence over the years. But now with marijuana legalization in full swing in nine states, including California, have the studios come around to stoking that market again like Cheech & Chong did during the decriminalization wave of the ’70s with “Up in Smoke” and several sequels into the ’80s?

How many penis jokes can you fit into a film? Super Troopers 2 tries to answer the question by pushing the subject to the max (that’s not a euphemism). The male parts get kicked, tasered, threatened of being shaved, discussed ad nauseam, and even boxed. Why they are the centerpiece of so many jokes could be analyzed on a deeper level, but that would require giving these jokes more thought than The Broken Lizard crew gave the script.
The lazy script – attributed to the entire Broken Lizard collective – doesn’t just reach for such low hanging fruit when it comes to genitalia, farts, and sex, but also in the way of making fun of Canadians. In fact, that’s the majority of the film. After a fantastical and amusing opening sequence that features a couple of cameos, the state troopers from Vermont head North across the border in order...

Raunchy and outrageous and coming at you this 4/20, Super Troopers 2 continues in the grand tradition of the Broken Lizard comedy group, serving up R-rated slapstick along with plenty of sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll.
Everyone’s favorite law enforcement team is back by popular demand with the long anticipated follow up to the cult comedy classic…Super Troopers. Fans of Broken Lizard can now mark their calendars as the comedy troupe’s next big screen adventure, Super Troopers 2, is set to be released April 20, 2018. The guys haven’t been seen together in a film since 2009’s The Slammin’ Salmon, in which the usual crew played waiters and chefs. The Original Super Troopers was released 15 years ago and became a cult classic with the ridiculous antics of some not so law-abiding law enforcement officers.
A minute-long teaser for Super Troopers 2 was released today, and from the looks of it, fans are in store for more of what made the first movie great. We see what looks to be some more shenanigans from the guys, as Rabbit, the rookie from the first film who was endlessly hazed, is tied down to a table and the rest of the guys seem to be dead set on helping him out with some manscaping.

It’s been 16 years since Super Troopers underperformed at the box office only to blossom into a bonafide cult classic, and now comedy troupe Broken Lizard are back with Super Troopers 2. The troupe have produced several other films since Super Troopers, including Club Dread and Beer League, but none entered the zeitgeist the way Troopers did.
Of course, a long delayed sequel to a well-loved comedy doesn’t always turn out for the best. Remember Dumb and Dumber To? If you do, I’m sorry. Hopefully Super Troopers 2 will manage to recapture the stoner comedy magic that endeared the first film to so many.
Broken Lizard’s Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske all return, along with Brian Cox, and new members to the cast include Lynda Carter and Rob Lowe. Super Troopers 2 opens 4/20/2018, because of course it does. You can watch...

In 2001, the Broken Lizard comedy troupe wrote and starred in the comedy “Super Troopers” about five goofball Vermont state troopers who are forced to save their jobs by actually solving a crime instead of pulling pranks all day. The film was a moderate box office success and was a hit on home video, and in the past 15 years, it has become a cult classic. Now, the long-awaited sequel has started filming, confirmed by the Broken Lizard Facebook page with the cheeky comment: “Action, chickenf**kers: back on set and we just the first new scene of #SuperTroopers2.” Check out the photo below.

Broken Lizard, the cult comedy troupe responsible for Club Dread and Beerfest, will be making a sequel to their beloved Super Troopers. Variety reports that Broken Lizard’s Indiegogo campaign not only surpassed its $2 million goal, it earned a whopping $4.4 million, usurping Zach Braff’s Wish I Was Here as the second-most successful crowdsourced film campaign ever, behind Veronica Mars, which made $5.7 million. Desperation may be a stinky cologne, but crowdsourcing is totally legit. As an incentive for donations, the troupe released its first film, Tin Foil Monkey Agenda, exclusively to contributors. The original Super Troopers, made for a miniscule $1.2 million in 2001, earned $23 million at the box office. It depicts the misadventures of a handful of inept (but utterly lovable) Vermont state troopers, who spend their time filling lockers with shaving cream and eating maple syrup. The original five dopey Vermont state troopers — Jay Chandrasekhar,...

Bill Paxton ate a Caesar salad for lunch on Monday. I don't know why in the world you'd want to know that, but I often read what an actor orders during this type of interview.
To be fair, it was supposed to be oysters. I met Paxton at a midtown Manhattan oyster bar, but the actor quickly called an audible on locations: "I'm looking to actually eat," he said, "do you mind if we go somewhere else?" Considering that I had not picked the oyster bar in the first place, I certainly didn't mind.
Honest truth: I've never met with an actor who is this excited about a role. Hopeful about future Oscar chances, or whatever? Sure. But never this ridiculously giddy. Paxton plays the heavy in "2 Guns" opposite Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, a role that allows him to chew scenery as if it were Hubba Bubba and gamely...

At the 2012 Academy Awards, “The Descendants” took home the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay and most viewers were probably surprised to see writer/director Alexander Payne (a previous winner for “Sideways” and nominee for “Election”) flanked by Dean Pelton from “Community” and that dude from “Club Dread.” It was the first time in Payne’s career not collaborating with his usual co-writer Jim Taylor and the first time he had taken to rewriting someone else's screenplay (in this case an adaptation of the novel by Jim Rash ("Community") and Nat Faxon ("Club Dread"). Most people watching Payne's acceptance speech probably assumed that it was his award to take home and the other two were just lucky to be standing up there. For their second screenplay and duo decided to step behind the camera with “The Way, Way Back” and prove that it was no fluke. Inspired by the Rash and...

Broken Lizard alum Paul Soter is taking a break from outlandish, wacky comedies like Super Troopers and Beerfest and going in a different direction: horror, pure and simple. In his new film, Dark Circles, not a laugh is to be had in this dark psychological horror flick about new parents who fall apart when sleep deprivation gets the better of them. We spoke with Paul about his love of horror movies, how this film was inspired by his real-life experience as a new dad, and how horror differs from Broken Lizard films.
Where did the idea for Dark Circles come from?
It’s somewhat biographical. When I had my first kid a couple years ago, we kind of did the same thing. We moved into a house without doing our due diligence. We had our baby and found out there were tear-downs going on all over our neighborhood. Having a baby cry all night,...

Sequels are awesome, plain and simple. Returning to familiar characters and worlds we love is like covering yourself with a warm blanket, although when a sequel is bad it can be like a blanket covered in potato bugs and lice. Studios love sequels because seven times out of ten they open huge, no matter how good they are.

It's kind of hard to believe it's been twelve years since Super Troopers first was released, and I don't think I've seen it since it was in theaters. I honestly never thought of or expected to see a sequel for the movie, but it looks like the Broken Lizard comedy troupe is getting back together to give us one! Since Super Troopers they've made a few other comedies such as Club Dread, Beerfest, The Slammin' Salmon, The Babymakers, and Freeloaders, none of which have been as good or funny as their first film.
Apparently Super Troopers 2 secured financing back in 2009, but writers and the studio couldn't agree on a script. Now in a recent interview with Guy Speed, Kevin Heffernan, who played Farva, said that the sequel could start shooting this year!

A sequel to the 2001 cult comedy hit "Super Troopers" could begin shooting as early as this year, according to Kevin Heffernan and Steve Lemme, two-fifths of the Broken Lizard comedy troupe. Broken Lizard, formed at New York's Colgate University in 1990, has written and starred in such films as "Super Troopers," "Club Dread" and "Beerfest," all of which member Jay Chandrasekhar directed. The Broken Lizard comedy troupe has since made Club Dread, Beerfest, The Slammin' Salmon, The Babymakers, and Freeloaders, but it's safe to say that none of those follow-up projects were as iconic as the group's breakout effort. But it looks like they're going back to what worked, as Guy Speed (via ScreenCrush) has an interview with Kevin Heffernan (who played Farva) who says the comedy sequel could finally get underway this year. Read on! We last heard that Super Troopers 2 secured financing way back in 2009, but though multiple drafts were written, it sounds like the writers and the studio couldn't agree on a script, until now.
