Remarkable movie, you just got to see this one
natarajdance19 January 2005
It's exactly showing how things took place. After this horrible Bosnian war, and with all this new tragedies around the globe, we might be forgetting what took place in Bosnia. We (world), in the 90-is basically had a concentration camps there, in a heart of Europe, in a prime time of European community getting together. If you happen to be no Serbian, you easily end up in concentration camp, or you could just being killed. Similar to Ruanda situation. Movie is not the easiest thing to watch, but we got to inform our selves what is bad and what should we try to stop at all cost

Movie is based on a true story. It follows a young screenwriter ( Tarik Karaga ) who sends his own screenplay to a contest in France just before war broke out in Bosnia. Screenplay was based on his Father being taken to concentration camp during the second world war, and his best Serbian friend is saving his life. In a meantime war begins and young screenwriter is being taken to concentration camp (1992). Now few critics from France, are trying to save Tarik ( screenwriter ) trough United Nations, in a similar way like his Father was saved in his play. It might be the best movie I have ever seen. Movie is done in a very good way.At one point REM song "Losing my Religion" played in a background brought a tear in my eye.

Great, Great Movie.

Mr Dino Mustafic Bravo !

A neutral, non-biased review
Radu_A28 October 2020
I am Romanian so neither Serb nor Bosnian, but of course the war affected us and drove us firmly into acceptance of EU and NATO membership. Both Serbs and Bosnians made many films about this subject, with the more famous Bosnian films either lamenting the collapse of humanity ("Perfect Circle" (1997), "No Man's Land" (2001), or focusing on the emotional aftermath of rape and family destruction ("Grbavica" (2006), "Halima's Path" (2012). The Serbian films went from mourning the loss of Yugoslavia ("Underground" (1995), "Pretty Village Pretty Flame" (1996) to self-pitying critique of the Milosevic regime ("Cabaret Balkan" (1998), "The Professional" (2003). All of these are really good films though with strong storytelling which give the viewer a good idea about the state of mind the countries were in. "Remake", however, is one of the nationalist efforts which are less well rounded, and seem built on displaying a maximum amount of Serbian atrocities. There are no moral gray zones, just a fight between the good Bosnians and the evil Serbs. Its display of camp conditions is accurate, but there is little narrative balance. Its domestic success is quite understandable given how nationalist Serbs were becoming at the time. But it's not a great film as the many two-line reviews here suggest, and has never received a proper international DVD release. Its claimed commercial success is impossible to verify and may very well be fabricated, as it is suspicious how many recent reviews and Wikipedia updates this film receives. Don't get me wrong, this is not a bad film. However, all of the aforementioned films have better stories, better acting, and do a better job of explaining the war to foreigners.

One of the best war movies I have ever watched!

One of the best war movies I have ever watched. Amazing and brilliant film. Incredible autobiographical story. The film sends a strong message: History repeats itself! This movie can be compared with films like Schindler's List or Life Is Beautiful.

a big effort, somewhat too sided (possible spoilers)
leandros10 March 2004
Warning: Spoilers
Dino Mustafic has doubtlessly made a big effort to adapt the screenwriter Zlatko Topcic's autobiographical novel. Remake is a big production, obviously straight from the heart of the director. However, giving all the credit to his heart, I am unsure if he deliberately left out some goodness in the film. All of the "good friends" of the protagonist Tariq turn their back at him, eventually betraying him. Strangely, it makes one feel that either the original literature piece or the script, or knowing that the writer is the same person, both are somewhat sided, written in bitter agony (naturally) and (perhaps) cinematic revenge. I think this big movie would have received more international acclaim it deserved if it had left out some of its strong nationalistic approach.

wow, how pathetic authors can be
rinakarinaka2 March 2020
I am referring more to the reviews here than to the film itself. It looks like the same person wrote all those "glorious" reviews. It is usually done when there is a HUGE problem with the film. I could bet the guy behind all the reviews is the scriptwriter or director itself, as nobody else could write such things about this movie. So many "reviewers" who wrote only one, almost the same review. So, so pathetic, laughable.

The problem here is the film - I tried to watch it, and wow, like 30yrs old actor plays a teenage kid, everything is so artificial, unconvincing... had to stop after a few minutes.

It's a great film about the Bosnian War. It fully represents the atmosphere of that time, the life of people during the war. Must watch at least once in a lifetime!

Not bad but could have been better
adisgolos30 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I can't agree with other reviewers calling Remake a masterpiece. It is among the better films made in Bosnia after the war '92-'95 but the competition is rather weak. It can't compete with Bosnian films before that war, just to name one real masterpiece "The Battle on Neretva" by Veljko Bulajic. I can't deny that Dino Mustafic had a genuine intention to show what was happening during the aggression on Bosnia and Herzegovina. The script was strong and gave him a lot of opportunities. Direction however was mediocre. You can see clearly that his theatrical experience was more a burden than an asset for this film. Than can be seen especially in "second war" part at the beginning which is the weakest part of the film. Flat and artificial, with completely unnecessary love triangle. I had a feeling that I was watching a stage play rather than real life. Locations seemed cartoonish, actors overreacted a lot (or it is just bad acting) Lucija Serbedzija's (Eva) performance was pretty weak, the same goes to Ermin Sijamija (Ahmed Karaga). The only exception is Admir Glamocak. Acting in the '92-'95 war part was much better with some stronger performances (like Dejan Acimovic and Emir Hadzihafizbegovic as chetniks). The best scene in my opinion is the one with prisoner singing. Emotional, well acted and directed. Mustafic could have done much better job in the rest of the film with clearer presentation of historical background and locations since for the audience outside Balkans it could be pretty confusing who is who, where, why etc. So confusing that it confused some critics like Deborah Young from Variety who wrote that Tarik's father "...got arrested and tortured in 1941 by Tito's communist zealots" while in reality he was arrested by Tito's enemies ustashas. There are also some plot holes or at least too big coincidences; SPOILER-Tarik Karaga finds his enemy, Miso, by accident, seeing his portrait on a street artist's drawings. Among millions of other people in Paris? Really? Similarly, SPOILER-when Tarik at the end throws a bomb into the bunker, what would be the possibility that his friend Miro is in it? 1:50 000? OK it is not my intention to split hairs here just to show it is not everything just perfect with this film as other reviewers claim. Two more things that I would like to point out: first, atrocities and massacres done in Bosnia during the last war were much worse than what was shown in the film; and secondly, although most of the film is taking place in Sarajevo, the 3 year long siege of the city is not even mentioned. To conclude, yes, Mustafic's film is still among the 2 best films (the other one would be Ademir Kenovic's "The perfect Circle") made in Bosnia about the last war. Masterpiece it is not, not even close. Music (by Adi Lukovac) and cinematography (by Mustafa Mustafic) are both excellent. My vote is 6.

mestejestu24 August 2018
A truly masterpiece, one of the best films ever made! Incredible movie, great story, acting, directing, emotion, film photography. The film leaves a message that it is necessary to look into the future in spite of everything but the key message is: Never revenge! Because of this film I love Bosnia.

The film in Hollywood style
monely226 March 2018
Remake is the film in Hollywood style, big budget, box-office success, attractive locations... Definitely one of the greatest war films of all time, two tragic stories, two tragic periods, genially written, incredibly realistic. Congratulations Bosnia on this masterpiece!

A classic with a strong message
westonferreira170213 August 2020
Creative movie making at its best. You cannot fault even the minutest aspect of this movie. So perfect is this movie in all respects. Every frame of this movie is gripping with suspense and thrill. Once you begin watching this movie it is hard to stop it halfway and throughout the movie the edge of the seat suspense is maintained.

I can write an entire book of praises for this movie and all its aspects and still that won't be enough. But just one line will suffice: A masterpiece at its best!

Completely unique
dietrichmall7 August 2020
The two most powerful things that the film had in hand were its fantastic performances and the message of the film (history repeats itself and that those who do not learn from it are doomed to repeat it). Overall, it's a masterpiece and nothing short of that. One of the best war films (or films in general) I have ever seen.

Powerful and essential movie
Seall914 December 2021
"Remake" is a powerful and essential movie that is a reminder to the world of where hatred can lead to. The movie shows the war in the most confronting way possible. It doesn't hold back with its images or story. In that regard "Remake" is a daring movie.

Since almost everything in the movie is based on true events it makes it all even more powerful. It's hard to imaging that these horrible things all actually truly occurred.

Everyone should watch this movie, not only because it's such a good one but especially because it's a very important one, that reminds us of what happened, and should never happen again.

Warning: Spoilers
Simply outstanding. It's an incredibly moving film that can inspire you, horrify you, bring you to tears and also make you ashamed that you didn't do anything about it. The scene with "Singer" in the camp was one of the most emotional scenes I've ever watched. 10/10
