From Nicole Kidman on a BMX to Collingwood on the big screen, our pick of the best sport films
1) Save Your Legs
There are a couple of pretty fail-safe ways to stop a conversation dead in its tracks, but one of the best is to try and convince someone that they need to go and see an Australian movie. If that Australian movie happened to be about a cricket team, it wouldn't be out of the question to suggest that your co-conversationalist might just turn and walk at pace. Which brings us to Save Your Legs, surely one of the least-loved Australian films of recent times and with no good reason; this film is actually half-decent.
It's quite admirable that an Australian filmmaker would multiply their odds of failure by making a film like this one. We're often told that cricket is the sport with the richest and most voluminous literary canon,...

“We made it in the spirit of . . . just need[ing] to make this film, it’s crying out to be done, without expectations of what will happen to it,” says Paul Morrison, director of Little Ashes about his film. “But I’ve been around long enough to know it’s when you least expect it that good things can happen.” Little Ashes (which will be released this Friday, May 8, in the United States) has been met with great anticipation. Starring (The Twilight Saga: New Moon and How To Be star) Robert Pattinson, Javier Beltran, Matthew McNulty, and Marina Gatell, and produced by Carlo Dusi, the film will present an ephemeral biopic of the life of Salvador Dali – a Spanish artist whose art, some say, is impossibly well done. As a director, Paul Morrison is known for his work in Wondrous Oblivion, Solomon And Gaenor, and Degas And Pissarro Fall Out. With Little Ashes nearing release,...

The arrival of "Star Trek" signals the start of blockbuster season (in our orbit, "Wolverine" doesn't count), and the indie world wastes no time with responding in kind with a few big name players of its own.

Atom Egoyan landed himself a Palme d'Or nomination at last year's Cannes for the latest of his patented multi-stranded narratives of introspection, this one a meditation on the marginalization of truth and the role of technology in the post-9/11 mindset. Devon Bostick stars as Simon, an orphaned student whose class assignment translating a newspaper article about the would-be martyrdom of a pregnant woman has personal ramifications when he writes a fictionalized op-ed from the perspective of the now-grown child that takes on a life of its own once it hits the web.

Can't get enough of "Twilight" star Robert Pattinson? If that's a no, make sure to check out the trailer for Paul Morrison's "Little Ashes" right after the jump.
Written by Philippa Goslett, the film focuses on the decadent lifestyle of the young trio of Salvador Dali, Federico Garcia Lorca and Luis Bunuel.
Pattinson is on board as Dali, while Javier Beltran plays Lorca. Matthew McNulty stars as Bunuel. As for Morrison, you may or may not have seen his last film, "Wondrous Oblivion."
To be honest, I don't know what exactly to think of "Little Ashes," now that I've seen the trailer. The story is certainly an interesting one, but as you can see below, the movie looks kind of cheap.
Word is the film will open in limited release in March 2009. Check out the trailer below, and feel free to share what you think.

Little Ashes is a biopic of sorts that follows artist Salvador Dalí, played by Twilight star Robert Pattinson, filmmaker Luis Buñuel, played by Matthew McNulty, and writer Federico García Lorca, played by Javier Beltran, in Spain during the 1920s. As much as I was curious to see a film about the life of one of my favorite artists, this doesn't look that good. It looks like it was shot well, on location in Spain, but that doesn't make a great film in the end. I'll still hold my breath and hope for the best, but unfortunately I'm not impressed. Though I know Twilight fans will still swoon over Pattinson all day long.
