If you like Walsh and Flynn, you will like 'Raoul Walsh and Errol Flynn'

"Couples et duos" is an excellent documentary series written and directed by Laurent Préyale whose basic concept is to study the common road taken by a duo of exceptional artists whose added talents have produced major cinematic works of art. This episode, glorifying the working partnership of two free electrons, Raoul Walsh and Errol Flynn, is no exception. For nearly a decade indeed, the tight-fisted, hard- drinking director made the most of the handsome, provocative, hard- drinking Aussie actor. Not content to detail the two men's careers, setting them against the more general context of film history, Laurent Préyale (who co-wrote with Stéphane Loison) manages to single out what made the legendary duo work so well in such a short period of time (Remember among others "They Died With Their Boots On", "Gentleman Jim" and "Objective Burma") : a kind of wild energy tinged with contempt for conventions, of grand madness challenging the world, sufficiently controlled in Walsh to keep control over himself and, even more important, over Flynn, whose antics ended up ruining the last part of his career and rushing him to premature death. Well illustrated by a great deal of stills and film clips, vividly commented in the first person by narrators adopting either Walsh or Flynn's voices (much of what is said is derived from their respective memoirs), "Raoul Walsh et Errol Flynn" is both an informative and fascinating installment in a great documentary series.
