Cautious criticism of the corruption in China
The literal translation of the title of this film is: Contemporary Huo Shen.
Ho Shen was a 18th century official in the imperial court who ranked just below the emperor. He was so corrupted that after his execution by the new emperor, his asset was equivalent to the sum of 10 years tax income of the imperial government.
This historical part was rarely mentioned in this movie and thus the movie did not do a good job in that it tried to use the past corrupted officials to imply the current corrupted regime, but because of the Cultural Revolution which destroyed the education system, including the education of Chinese history, many people did not know the extend of Huo Shen's corruption. As a result, the supposedly powerful comparison lacks the convincing power like it should have.
