In a recent interview with Comic Natalie, studio Orange founder Eiji Inomoto shared his initial doubts on the establishment of a CG specialized animation studio and the remarkable rise of CG animation within the anime industry.
Initially a freelance CG creator in the game industry, Inomoto transitioned to anime with ‘Zoids: Chaotic Century‘ in 1999. He handled all aspects of production for projects like ‘Geneshaft‘ and ‘Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex‘.
His pivotal moment came when he was offered to manage CG for Shoji Kawamori’s ‘Aquarion‘, leading him to establish Orange.
Initial Skepticism:
Reflecting on the early days, Inomoto revealed that he was unsure if such a company could sustain itself as a viable business even with the increasing use of CG in anime.
“At that time, the demand for CG in the anime industry was growing as a way to fill in the gaps that were difficult to handle with traditional animation.

Just days after Warner Bros. announced “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for a Gollum” as a new live-action film for 2026, Rohan has mustered its forces for an epic first look at “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.” We finally have a taste of the animation style of the Warner Bros. feature, directed by anime filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama, in images released in advance of the presentation for the film at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. See the images below.
The anime film will be set 261 years before the events of the live-action “The Lord of the Rings” movies, and it does not have the involvement of Peter Jackson, though his producing partner Philippa Boyens will be part of the presentation at Annecy. “War of the Rohirrim” will concern itself with an event where the villainous Wulf, a lord of Dunland, seeks revenge...

The legacy of the great writer J.R.R. Tolkien lives on, but not all of its manifestations are equally successful. After mixed (mostly negative and neutral) reviews of The Rings of Power, it became known that several projects in Tolkien's universe are being planned, but the project that currently attracts the most attention and hopes of fans is full-length anime – The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.
What Will The Anime Be About?
The upcoming project tells the story of Helm Hammerhand and the defense of the fortress of Hornburg in Helm's Deep.
The events described above were precipitated by the murder of Freca, the ruler of the lands of the Dunlendings. At one of the councils, he asked for the hand of King Rohan's daughter for his son, to which Helm responded only with ridicule. Then Freca, enraged by the refusal, insulted the king and began to threaten him.

After "The Hobbit" trilogy got a mixed reception (despite being a commercial success) and "The Rings of Power" improved upon the feature films and even turned war from a cool source of thrills into the horror Tolkien described, the "Lord of the Rings" franchise is going back on the big screen where it belongs.
Warner Bros. It’s been a long time coming, but anime veteran Masayuki Yoshihara finally helmed his first feature-length film with the 2023 release Komada — A Whisky Family.
Yoshihara is best known for his anime projects on television, with credits including Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Eden of the East and Dragon Ball Z. In 2013, he helmed the well-received anime series The Eccentric Family for P.A. Works, based on the popular novel by Tomihiko Morimi. The Kyoto-set fantasy series ran for two seasons (25 episodes in total) and firmly established Yoshihara as a television director, the next step was to helm a fully-fledged anime movie.

Kirk Baily, the actor best known for his role as dim-witted camp counselor Kevin “Ug” Lee on the early Nickelodeon sitcom “Salute Your Shorts,” died Feb. 27 in Los Angeles. His domestic partner, Ranjani Brow, confirmed that he died after battling lung cancer. He was 59.
Baily got his start as a sound coordinator for the 1988 cult classic “Killer Klowns From Outer Space,” before he was cast in “Salute Your Shorts,” which premiered in 1991. Created by Steve Slavkin and based on a book of the same name he wrote with Thomas Hill, “Salute Your Shorts” premiered July 1991 and ran for two seasons. The series starred Danny Cooksey, Erik MacArthur, Blake Soper, Michael Bower, Trevor Eyster, Venus DeMilo Thomas, Heidi Lucas and Megan Berwick as various campers at the fictional Camp Anawanna. Baily’s character, Ug, acted as an antagonist toward the kids, as well as the most frequent victim of their pranks.

Twenty years after delivering Peter Jackson’s mega Oscar-winning “Lord of the Rings” trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved book series, New Line Cinema is re-teaming with Warner Bros. Animation for an original anime feature building off Tolkien’s universe.

The J.R.R. Tolkien franchise is heading back to the big screen in a fresh New Line and Warner Animation anime title The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. I’m told that the Oscar-winning feature architects Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh are not involved with the project as we speak, but that will be determined down the road. Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings: Return of the King scribe Philippa Boyens will be a consultant on the new project directed by Kenji Kamiyama. The pic is being fast-tracked with animation work done by Sola Entertainment. Voice casting is currently underway. Pic will be distributed around the globe by Warner Bros. Pictures.

With a brief tweet the streaming giant Netflix has announced that a new addition to the “Ghost in the Shell Universe” is officially in the making.
The upcoming brand new series, called “Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045” will premiere in 2020 and will be co-directed by Shinji Aramaki from “Appleseed” and Kenji Kamiyama from “Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex”. It will be a collaboration between studios Production I.G. and Sola Digital Arts.
Lots of media attention and hype had been gravitating around the last attempt to progress the popular “saga”, the controversial Rupert Sanders’ live action 2017 movie, casting Scarlett Johansson in the lead role of cyborg Major Motoko Kusanagi and triggering a huge debate about Hollywood’s whitewashing issue.
“Ghost in the Shell” was originally a hugely popular manga series, written and illustrated by Masamune Shirow. In 1995 it was adapted into an anime film of the same name,...

Netflix’s major push into anime continues with the announcement the streaming giant is planning a brand new “Ghost in the Shell” anime for a 2020 debut. The series, officially titled “Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045,” is being co-directed by Kenji Kamiyama (“Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex”) and Shinji Araki (“Appleseed”). It’s unclear at this point whether or not the project is a feature film or a television series.
“Ghost in the Shell” originally started as a hugely popular manga series written and illustrated by Masamune Shirow. The series was famously adapted into a 1995 anime film of the same name, directed by Mamoru Oshii. The anime “Ghost in the Shell” is largely credited with influencing science-fiction cinema into the 21st century, most evidently “The Matrix” soundtrack.
While Netflix has not revealed further details about “Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045,” here’s hoping the voice cast remains culturally appropriate.

A new adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s Ghost in the Shell manga, titled Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, is coming to Netflix in 2020 — by wait of 3Dcg animation.
Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) and Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed) are set to serve as directors on the project using next-generation animation, with Production I.G (Ghost in the Shell) and Sola Digital Arts (Netflix’s upcoming Ultraman anime) serving as the production studios.
The original Ghost in the Shell manga tells the story of Public Security Section 9, a counter-cyberterrorist organization led by protagonist Major Motoko Kusanagi, in mid-21st century Japan.

There’s a new Blade Runner anime series going into development called Blade Runner - Black Lotus, and it was inspired by Blade Runner 2049.
We may never see another Blade Runner movie again because they have been box office bombs, but at least we will be getting more stories set in the universe in anime form! Hey, it’s better than nothing!
The plot of the series is being kept under wraps, it’s been confirmed that the story will “take place in 2032 and will include some familiar characters from the Blade Runner universe.”
The series will be produced by Alcon Entertainment, WarnerMedia’s Adult Swim, and Crunchyroll. The series will air on Adult Swim’s Toonami programming block. Crunchyroll will handle worldwide streaming.
Blade Runner – Black Lotus will consist of 13 half-hour episodes, and the animation is being done by Sola Digital Arts, who also worked on the new Ultraman series.

Decades ago, a being known as the Giant of Light joined Shin Hayata of the Scientific Special Search Party to save Earth from an invasion of terrifying monsters known as Kaiju. Now, many years later, those dark days are fading into memory, and the world is at peace. But in the shadows a new threat is growing, a danger that can only be faced by a new kind of hero - a new kind of Ultraman.

Lucy, Black Widow and soon, Major Motoko Kusanagi. Come 2017, Hollywood veteran Scarlett Johansson will be headlining Paramount’s lavish Ghost in the Shell movie as The Major, an elite cyborg enforcer who spearheads a task force known as Section 9.
It’s another kick-ass role for the actress, who discussed her involvement in the Rupert Sanders-directed movie while chatting to Entertainment Tonight. Designed to take you behind the scenes of Ghost in the Shell, up above you’ll see Johansson and Co. engage in a pre-cg firefight on the streets of Wellington, New Zealand – acting as a stand-in for the futuristic cityscape of Masamune Shirow’s cyberpunk saga.

Get a peek of Scarlett Johansson in action as Major Motoko Kusanagi in the stylish first teaser for Paramount’s Ghost in the Shell.
In the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it clip, Johansson’s elite cyborg heroine delivers a sucker punch to an unsuspecting thug. Cloaked in some form of invisible technology, the leader of Section 9 truly looks the part as she begins to crack down on the city’s crime levels, and the fact that this teaser contains a nod to ‘Tokyo 11.13’ leads us to believe that the full trailer reveal is right around the corner. Stay tuned for more on that one.

Originally conceived as a feature length video release to conclude the Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex saga, Kenji Kamiyama's Solid State Society proved successful enough that it has been retrofitted in 3D and will soon be released theatrically in Japan. Which means, of course, a new trailer.
For those unfamiliar with Ghost In The Shell, let me say this. It deserves its reputation as one of the great scifi titles of all time with all of the different incarnations standing up beautifully. The series follows a squad of police who investigate cyber-crimes which would be a boring job now but when you live in the world where humanity has become heavily modified and augmented with technology, hackers have access to the consciousness. And that simple fact allows the show to strike a balance between heady philosophical issues and straight out action. If you're a neophyte I'd recommend...

Bandai Visual has released the first teaser trailer for Norageki!, directed by Hiroaki Ando. The video doesn’t show much (read: a few frames!) actual footage of the CG animated short film, but the fact that Dai Sato (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Ergo Proxy, Wolf’s Rain etc.) wrote the script already got me pretty excited.
According to the official website, Norageki! will be released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in Japan on March 25, 2011.
[See post to watch Flash video]
Synopsis:
In an isolated prison, a young man who seems conscientious, a sexy woman, a middle-aged ex-army man, an otaku girl, a mysterious old man and a cat are confined there. One day, they get freed after a blackout. In a strange way, all the prison guards have disappeared and they don’t know why they are released. They try to escape from the prison, however an extraordinary event occurs…

Screened at the closing of this year’s London Sci-Fi Oktoberfest, Eden of the East was premiered in the UK in a themed anime showcase. As the entire series will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on the 29th of November, I thought that it would be a good opportunity to review one of my favourite television shows to be released this year.
Based on the original story by Kenji Kamiyama, the series takes place a few months from now where Saki Morimi (Saori Hayami) is on a trip to America and bumps into a naked Akira Takizawa (Ryohei Kimura) with no memory of who he is. Shortly after, Akira finds a photograph, numerous passports and a mobile phone with eight billion yen in his supposed apartment and decides to travel back with Saki to Japan.

Ncm Fathom and Bandai Entertainment – the ones who brought us a special showing of Death Note last year – team up again to debut a one-night showing of Eureka Seven -- Good Night, Sleep Tight, Young Lovers on Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m. The nationwide event features the English-dubbed film and an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at its creation at the studio Bones.
