Interviews with gangster's friends and club owners are priceless
cpdowd18 July 2006
I found this documentary to be extremely in-depth and entertaining. As the Emmy award winning sound mixer for this film, I am perhaps a bit biased. Having seen this film frame by frame I am also an expert. Two things stand out in this piece. First the interviews with the friends of the "pack" as well as the various club owners are funny and scary at the same time. These people are real! Not like the out-of-work actors and models 'reality' we have today. Second the music is hip, swingin' and perfectly arranged, giving this piece pace and a sense of historical perspective. One somewhat sad note is the music soundtrack aired on A&E January 2nd 1999 is not the same as what was used on the A&E DVD box-set. The sync and timing of the new music is not perfect, as you would expect. I can only assume licensing rights were an issue. The Rat Pack DVD is still excellent but if you see it in your TV listings, mark it on your calender!

Excellent entertainment and history

Who exactly were the Rat Pack? How did that appellation come about? How did the whole gang come together? This is just the mere surface of this amazingly in-depth history/biography/entertainment piece. Intriguingly narrated by Danny Aiello, this comprehensive docu-tainment piece covers the tale in such marvelous depth that the deepest issues in American society, and in the world of entertainment, are uncovered in the process. Expecting a mild, superficial piece of fluff about an entertaining group of goof-offs, instead I got an intriguing, captivating, meticulously researched history/biography that taught me more about American history and sociology, as well as about the lives of celebrities, than I've learned in decades. Quite entertaining and enlightening. Quite recommended for all buffs of entertainment and of the hidden side of all things.
