Berlin and away
dlombaert11 October 2003
This German version of L'Auberge Espagnole has nothing of the charm and characterbuilding of it's french counterpart. None of the characters seem interesting, but maybe this is because we don't get a chance to really get to now them. The film is full of conversations but they really lead nowhere.... and this wasn't the intention, believe me ! This is like good times, bad times; with a younger(but not more interesting) cast.

The film is set in Berlin, hottest town in Europe (read the mags !), but not that you would notice: a missed chance ! The photography and direction is exceptionally bland and misses all creativity!

Music is fun though, you don't hear German krautrock all the time...

Feeling aimless
sechriwa27 February 2004
This movie is not really the German version of 'L'Auberge Espagnole' - 'Wir' is much darker and shows the other side of life after school. Whereas 'L'Auberge Espagnole' is a lovely comedy, 'Wir' is a drama. The characters are as interesting as in L'Auberge and definetely more complex. This is a movie about feeling aimless, somehow lost and very unsure what to do in the future. The soundtrack is excellent (2Raumwohnung...) and the acting is very good. There is no real plot, there are lots of different stories and sub-narratives which form a more or less chaotic and realistic image of Berlin's students and their problems with finding a meaning of life.

This is so poor!
gier-124 July 2004
What a very very poor film! What is it? Nothing. It tries to be something like half-documentary, authentic, profound... something! But it's like queuing many absolutely meaningless conversations... or not even that, but monologues of each character because these people don't really talk to each other! Is this a try to make them appear interesting? Well, monologues like "Oooh, a dog! I love dogs! I wanna have a dog!" are going through the whole film!!! If you watch "WIR" you get the impression that berlin students only drink, have sex and ... drink. That's what they do the whole time. No poesy, no creativity, no humor!!! NOTHING! Let's forget the film fast and watch L'Auberge Espagnole!

Not everyone can be a winner

Warning: Spoilers
"Wir" or "We" is a German movie from 13 years ago, maybe 15 already when you read this review. The 21st century is known, in terms of cinema, for the New German Wave, a huge quantity of films that feature young actors and we find out about their jobs, love, education and lives in general. Daniel Brühl and August Diehl would be two names that come to mind immediately. This film also is one of these, but unfortunately it is not a success. Not every film from that era can be. I personally felt that this 100-minute movie had several negative points. One would be that instead of focusing on 2 or 3 characters in general, the film is packed with so many characters that it considerably lacks focus on several occasions. The result is that none of the characters are elaborated on in a convincing manner that has the audience at the edge of their seats. Writer and director Martin Gypkens tried to make this one work mostly on the dramatic front, but there are comedy references too. The movie comes short in both areas. Gypkens is mostly known for making the "Rico/Oskar" films recently and he has partially stepped up his game in the last decade I will admit. I liked "Am Hang". But back to this one. I am not surprised at all that none of the actors in here are really famous now as they did not convince me. My overall verdict here would be a thumbs-down. I felt this was a pretty boring watch.
