Image Source: Getty / Keystone Prince Philip officially retired from royal duties this week. The 96-year-old leaves behind quite a legacy of appearances, engagements, and yes, a few controversies; he's become well-known over the years for his off-the-cuff remarks and sometimes insensitive gaffes, but he still remains a charming and gregarious presence. Philip is quite literally the queen's right-hand man, staying by her side at hundreds of events for royal charities while also enjoying personal hobbies like carriage racing and oil painting. Here are 12 things you may not have known about him. Related11 Things You Didn't Know About Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip's Royal Relationship He was a prince before he married Elizabeth II. Philip was born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark on the Greek island of Corfu on June 10, 1921. Top brass at the 12th Zurich Film Festival have given the Golden Eye for international feature film to The Happiest Day In The Life Of Olli Maki, the debut feature by Juho Kuosmanen.
The film, which previously won Cannes’ Un Certain Regard prize and is Finland’s Oscar submission, is based on the true story of a Finnish boxer who is more concerned with his new girlfriend than winning a championship bout.
The Golden Eye in Zurich comes with a $25,700 (25,000 Chf) cash prize.
Kuosmanen told Screen that awards are “always nice” and added that he was especially delighted by the audience reception.
“It feels like the film is communicating with different people with different backgrounds. The audience feedback has been very good [in Zurich] and for me it’s important that the film is understood and people are communicating with it.”

Chicago – Norman Lear is one of the greatest TV creators of the 20th Century, and beyond. The producer was a titan of 1970s television, with shows like “All in the Family,” “Good Times,” “Maude” and “Sanford and Son.” He is the topic of a new film documentary, “Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You.”
Lear is the embodiment of television history, having worked in the medium since its advent in the 1950s. He began with partner Ed Simmons, writing for shows like the “Ford Star Revue” and “The Colgate Comedy Hour” (with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis). Throughout the 1950s and ‘60s, he produced television that was common at the time – star oriented and non-controversial – while also writing and producing movie satire like “Divorce, American Style” and “Cold Turkey,” with partner Bud Yorkin. In the late 1960s, he began to work on a pilot called “Justice for All,” featuring a bigoted character named “Archie Justice.

This week’s UK release of the critically roasted Blood – a new thriller starring Paul Bettany and Stephen Graham (filmed, incidentally, in my home town) and the significantly more well-received Stone Roses documentary Made of Stone directed by Shane Meadows – who is usually known for his rough and realistic portrayals of working-class misery – prompted me to delve back into the archives of tough, raw British cinema. Meadows’ filmography consists of some fine work, most notably the pitch-black revenge thriller Dead Man’s Shoes (2004) and the occasionally brilliant coming-of-age drama This Is England (2006), and Paul Bettany has a history of playing volatile Cockney gangsters (see Gangster No.1 (2000) for his most harrowing depiction of a common man inducted into a life of crime). But these coldly convincing vignettes of blue-collar melancholy – which vary from complex character studies of adolescence to edgy accounts of working class anti-heroes in desperate situations – are by no means a thing of modernity.

Jean Stapleton, the versatile actress who will forever be remembered for her long-running role as the dim-witted but deep-hearted Edith Bunker on the groundbreaking 1970s sitcom All in the Family, died Friday at her home in New York City, her family confirms. Stapleton, who was 90, succumbed to natural causes. Having already established a career during the 1950s and early '60s for playing nosy neighbor roles in such Broadway smashes as Damn Yankees, Funny Girl and Bells Are Ringing, in which she played the owner of the titular answering service, Stapleton entered the TV pantheon with her high-pitched comic voice...

What a great idea, even if every girl on the planet knew from the get-go it would fail in execution.
"Cold Turkey" was Cat's way of letting go of Vincent so the thought of him and Alex exploring their past wouldn't hurt. The odds of that happening, of course, were quite miniscule. It was so realistic when Cat told Tess she thought she just sent him to the cabin with Alex because he might have been wavering because, yes, most females think just like that.
Cat did such an incredible job of pretending to Alex that she wasn't rotting inside, while hearing about her plans to take Vincent away to her family's cabin. A much better job than Vincent did understanding Cat's true feelings when he stupidly asked her opinion on taking the trip.
No matter how much I try to put myself into Vincent's shoes, I cannot grasp his...

Since going public with her bipolar II disorder diagnosis in 2011, Catherine Zeta-Jones has taken a little time to reflect. You find things inside yourself you never imagined were there." As for being so forthcoming about her battle with depression, Zeta-Jones, 43, whose next movie Broken City is out in January, admits it hasn't been easy. Back in 1992, two ladies named Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone swept into the television landscape and through the sheer force of their Dionysian appetites became heroes for generations of gay men. Hard-drinking, hard-living and hard-shopping, these women represented life lived at its most selfish and unrepentantly shallow, providing a glitter-caked, pill-strewn fantasy life for the many of us dealing with considerable real-life pressures. Ab Fab was hilarious, vulgar, and proudly offensive escapism that openly embraced the gay community as partners in living life to its fullest, middle-class conventions be damned.
After five series and numerous one-off specials (the latest being 2003's "Cold Turkey"/"White Box" Christmas special), Absolutely Fabulous is back with three new episodes bringing Eddy, Pats and the gang up-to-date. The relaxing hiatus is over for the Hamptons elite on "Revenge." When we meet up again with the Graysons, Emily Thorne & co. on the beach, they look stunned, which we then learn is due to the gun Tyler has pointed at them. He walks around the table before pointing it directly at Emily's head. Now, it's time to find out how exactly they found themselves in this little predicament.
It's two days earlier and Emily is not yet in "duress" -- her word of day, which also happens to be the title of the episode. She heads downstairs and is happy to see that Daniel is there, coffee in hand. The two mention that Tyler is still M.I.A. and Daniel says his mom is planning a party for his impending birthday. Like the simple W.A.S.P. she is, Emily suggests a clambake.
Conrad arrives and Emily is quick to excuse herself.

Hi ComicBookMovie Readers! Once again, I am back with my own level of dementia involving comic books, television, and science fiction. As promised, I will relay to you folks the reasons why I am deciding to stop collecting my favorite comic book series of all time: The X-Men. Don't get me wrong. I have a fondness for all of the characters. They were my "family" when I felt like an outcast to the rest of the world. You saw from my favorites list how high I regard Nightcrawler and Iceman in particular. But there comes a time when a man must move on from the trappings of his youth. When an act becomes one of repitition rather than love and it all feels like a chore. If doing something you love feels like a chore, I view it as time to stop the addiction. Cold Turkey... To me, a major...

The holidays came to Brothers & Sisters last night, and with them came some heavy drama. But the good outweighed the bad in this sweet midseason finale, which is fitting.
Uneven would be a good way to describe the first half of this season, with some deviation from what we've come to expect but enough flashes of brilliance to keep us riveted.
In "Cold Turkey," Nora decides she isn't going all-out for Christmas this year and is just going to get away with Dr. Karl. This sends the family into an all-out, collective panic.
Of course, this is the kind of forced plot device we're unfortunately seeing more of this year than in seasons' past. No way Nora would even contemplate going away. None.
Also, Sarah is in such a bad place that she just axes the woman at the radio station? Justin's girlfriend just invites herself to dinner after like two dates?...

With Black Friday nearly upon us, the urge for many a movie buff's friend or significant other will be to grab that $5 Blu-ray of Angels and Demons off the shelf and call it a day. (Oh, we're only kidding with Angels and Demons. Titles like Kick-Ass and The Wrestler will be nearly as cheap.) But for those who are willing to be a little more adventurous or just looking to impress, many of the major studios have started to open up their archives to make DVDs to order for films that may not be popular enough to have warranted a major pressing in the past, but certainly have their fans and have long been unavailable on any format.

Seasons Greetings!
Okay, it's a little early for that, but these advance photos from the December 12th episode of Brothers & Sisters have put us in a holiday mood. Kevin and Scotty certainly seem to be of good cheer, and Uncle Saul gets to unwrap a present early when old flame Stephen (played by Richard Chamberlain) shows up.
Here's the offcial blurb that came with the photo release. Make of it what you will. Warning: Possible Spoilers!

Lindsay's Dad -- She Shouldn't Quit Cold Turkey
Lindsay Lohan's father believes that forcing Lindsay to cut herself off from drugs and alcohol Asap is a bad thing -- and he's getting support from an expert.
Michael Lohan tells TMZ he thinks Lindsay has a problem with prescription pills, but he "doesn't think it's a good idea for her to detox on her own." He feels Lindsay would be best served by "being under a doctor's care."
And according to addiction recovery specialist Marc Kern -- Michael's logic ain't too far off.
Kern tells us if -- and only if -- Lindsay has a drug problem, "There probably should have been an assessment of her reliance and dependency of substances before they took her off of everything. That would have been a safer method."
Of course, this all assumes that Lindsay actually has a drug problem.

What is it about the first day back from an extended break? Well, I say break, but it's very hard to switch off completely when one's office rig, that big, fat, one-eyed toad that passes for the nerve center of one's operation, is squatting in one's sitting room, winking malevolently at one as one studiously ignores the fucker. Ooh, I sound like Prince Charles there--thank God we don't look similar, or I really would be up the creek with nothing but a pair of jug ears to paddle me to safety.
Anyhoo, Sunday night I was all excited to get back in the saddle, my mind whirring with new ideas and a big fat list of things to do. Monday, however, found me jaded, miserable, squinting at the glare from my screen and laboring like a warthog with emphysema (only with better teeth and better breath) over my keyboard. All...

It was thirty years ago that newlyweds John Lennon and Yoko ran their holiday message to the world in a full-page New York Times ad: "Give Peace A Chance." The couple also posted "War Is Over! If You Want It" on billboards in eleven cities around the globe.
At the same time, an unseasonable war was escalating among the once harmonious Beatles. In September 1969, Lennon had told the others that he was breaking the group up. McCartney begged him to delay a public announcement so as not to jeopardize sales of their imminent release, Abbey Road. His songwriting partner begrudgingly agreed.
At the end of the month, John recorded what was to become his first solo holiday hit, "Cold Turkey," about his heroin withdrawal. In explaining his and Yoko’s addiction, he later told an interviewer, "We took H because of what the Beatles and others were doing to us.

The off-beat 1967 comedy The President's Analyst is among the films being screened by Joe Dante. Director Joe Dante has sent us this press release regarding an exciting classic and cult movie festival he is hosting at the New Beverly Cinema in L.A. Don't miss his appearance on August 5 when he and Bruce Dern will be screening The Burbs and Smile.
I had so much fun hosting last year's film series that we're doing it again at The New Beverly Cinema, one of La's last bastion of movie worship! Remember, Movies Are Your Best Entertainment! Down With Pay TV! Aug. 5-6 The Burbs/Smile - It's cheeky of me to pair my own behavioral neighborhood comedy with Michael Ritchie's brilliantly observed social satire (American Beauty eat your heart out!), but both feature one of the movies' best, most underappreciated actors, Bruce Dern. From countless tv western bad guys through...
