Compact, precise supernatural erotic thriller

My surveying turn of the (21st) Century porn is turning up many a forgotten gem - satisfyingly proving how those storyline features hold up well. Jim Enright's "Silent Echoes" starring Devinn Lane is quality craftsmanship with hot sex that could inspire one of today's gonzo hacks to rethink his profession and perhaps try for quality for a change.

Opening scene gathers most of the cast in an atmospheric house that provides a solid setting for the action. Shanna McCullough is an avid believer in things that go bump in the night, and challenges skeptic Devinn to being hypnotized, to prove her point.

With plenty of peer pressure in the room, Devinn agrees, thinking she can't be hypnotized. Enright stylishly depicts Shanna's method of suggestion and soon Devinn is under, seeing strange and scary visions.

Worse yet, post hypnotic suggestions, innocently incorporated by Shanna, have disturbing results as Devinn literally becomes involved in a ghost story, involving the marital breakup of Kyle Stone and lovely star Chloe, as well as treachery by another of the characters. Final reel revelations tie up the tale neatly and along the way there is plenty of style to the ghostly happenings (involving sex, of course), with Enright including an interesting motif whereby Devinn's identification with dead Chloe leads to her uncontrollably taking Chloe's role in several scenes.

Sex is hot and extremely well-photographed, with an emphasis on lesbian sex, a specialty of contract star Devinn. The feature is short and sweet, and admirably handles the subject matter in a manner that is easy to follow yet suspenseful.

Oh for the days when quality like this was the standard, rather than today's world of gonzo in which a simple, well-made film like "Silent Echoes" would stick out like a sore thumb in a morass of mediocre product. Sadly even Enright wound up his career doing dumb parodies and pointless Amy Fisher vehicles, quite a comedown.
