New data from Ampere Analysis shows the Apple TV+ library grew by 25% between February and March thanks to the addition of licensed movies.
The strategy for Apple TV+ has always been clear, even if outside observers didn’t necessarily agree with it. The streamer would showcase only Apple originals, a testament to the high production values and A-level stars the company is able to bring to its shows thanks to revenue generated by its device retailing segment. But that all changed in early March when the streamer imported more than 50 movies created by various other Hollywood studios for a short window. New data from Ampere Analysis suggests that perhaps Apple may not want to be so hasty in letting its next batch of licensed titles go if it decides to repeat the experiment again.

‘Despicable Me 4’ CinemaCon Footage: Gru Pulls Off ‘Mission: Impossible’ Heist Armed With Diaper Bag
Gru, the recovering supervillain turned huggable and lovable dad, is back in action.
Universal premiered a new sequence from “Despicable Me 4,” the latest installment in the studio and its partner Illumination’s long-running animated franchise, at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Wednesday. It featured an aspiring villainess (Joey King) as well as a new addition to the Gru family — Gru Jr., who bears a strong resemblance to his beak-nosed namesake — as they attempted a “Mission: Impossible” style heist of a heavily fortified castle. The only problem is Gru’s assistants, the Minions, brought the wrong equipment. Instead of his gear and gadgets, he is armed with only a diaper bag. That means Gru is left to deal with lasers, guards and a vicious honey badger with only diaper rash cream, baby bottles and a pacifier to protect him. It doesn’t help that Gru Jr. keeps crawling around, inadvertently setting off booby traps.

Besides being famous for never aging a day in his life, Paul Rudd is living proof that being a terrific actor and the nicest guy in show business are terms that aren’t mutually exclusive. A classically-trained actor, Rudd realized early on that comedy was his forte, and he soon found himself much in demand for television work. Not surprisingly, his feature film debut was in a comedy, Amy Heckerling‘s 1995 “Clueless,” which brought Rudd the best reviews of his still-growing career. More film work followed, mostly in comedy but occasionally in dramas, one of which, 1999’s “The Cider House Rules,” brought Rudd his first SAG Award nomination as part of that film’s ensemble cast.
With 2004’s “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy,” Rudd began a collaboration with filmmaker Judd Apatow that would change his career. Over the next decade, Rudd would co-star in six films that were either...

Jimmy Fallon and Maya Rudolph Reminisce on Will Ferrell’s Various ‘SNL’ Behind-the-Scenes Alter Egos
Maya Rudolph reunited with her former Saturday Night Live castmate Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show Tuesday night, where they reminisced over co-star Will Ferrell’s behind-the-scenes antics at Studio 8H.
Fallon asked Rudolph if she remembered a character that the Anchorman star created on set.
“Are you talking about Chip Kudrow or Ron?” interrupted Rudolph.
The host noted that the character he was thinking of was Chip Kudrow, a persona that Ferrell used for an ongoing bit, where he pretended to be Lisa Kudrow’s brother.
Rudolph explained, “Will Ferrell had a character named Chip Kudrow who would just show up at our pitch meetings.”
It’s clear that Ferrell had various alter egos on set, as Fallon asked Rudolph if Chip was the one who wore a referee shirt or overalls. This prompted Fallon to mention another one of the Barbie star’s characters, named Ron.

"Wedding Crashers" and "Anchorman" star Vince Vaughn showed up during the big game alongside two of the greatest sports legends of all time: Tom Brady and Wayne Gretzky. The former Patriots quarterback and NHL hockey legend were seen alongside Vaughn in a BetMGM ad, which aired during this year's Super Bowl between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs. While the Chiefs won the game, the commercial was also a winner. But how is it that this became Vaughn's first Super Bowl commercial during his long career that spans more than three decades?
Vaughn recently spoke with Variety about the ad. The ad shows the actor — who is looking like his "Swingers" self in Las Vegas — telling the world at large that BetMGM is for everyone ... except Tom Brady. Why? Will & Harper sees Will Ferrell take a road trip with his friend of 30 years, who’s coming out as a trans woman.
Among the films making their debut at the Sundance Film Festival early next year is a fresh project starring Will Ferrell. Nothing unusual there, perhaps. Only this time, Ferrell is co-starring in a new documentary film, that takes him and his long-time friend on something of a road trip.
Going by the name Will & Harper, the starting point for the feature is Will Ferrell discovering that his friend of three decades is coming out as a trans woman.

Unlike Cannes and Venice, Sundance isn’t a film festival that inspires too many standing ovations. But moviegoers at the Eccles Theatre were moved (more than once!) to stand up and applaud after the premiere of “Will & Harper,” a funny, heartbreaking and poignant documentary about Will Ferrell taking a road trip with his longtime friend, Harper Steele, who transitioned at 61.

After a chance audience member saw him at a L.A. comedy club (described in the Podtalk below), he was hired as a weatherman for Knbc-tv in Los Angeles in the days of personalities and communicators in that position. A New Year means lots of removals from Netflix and January 1st is looking busy, with over 100 movies set to leave the service already. Below, we’ll be keeping track of all the Netflix departures for the first month of 2024.
First, a few housekeeping notes as to how Netflix removals work before we dive in. Due to licensing agreements, shows and movies added to Netflix aren’t added forever. Instead, they’re essentially rented for a fixed period. All the shows below have their current window on Netflix ending and will likely be bound for a rival streaming service.
We list titles slightly differently from other outlets, with our listings being the actual day of removal. If you want to watch any titles scheduled to expire on January 1st, for example, you’ll need to watch by the end of December 31st.

Where have all the comedies gone? Think about that and sing it to yourself to the tune of Paula Cole's "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?" We used to be a proper country, inundated with the works of filmmakers like Judd Apatow, Adam McKay, and Paul Feig, starring big name talent like Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Melissa McCarthy, and Jason Segel, just to name a few of the actors who led big studio comedies that were hitting the big screen left and right. Sadly, times have changed, and it's hard to find a successor to "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," the next "Superbad" or "Bridesmaids," or even another "Forgetting Sarah Marshall."
This year alone, you'd be hard-pressed to find movies that are just straight up comedies. Sure, "Barbie" is incredibly funny, but it's not your average straight-up comedy. "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves...

Adam McKay won’t move forward with “Average Height, Average Build,” a comedy about a serial killer that was set to star Robert Pattinson, Amy Adams and Robert Downey Jr. Netflix was supposed to produce the star-studded film, but the streamer won’t make the project without McKay’s involvement behind the camera, sources confirmed to Variety.
Instead, the writer and director will reportedly focus on a movie about climate change, a topic that seems about as ripe for laughs as murderers. However, McKay has found the humor in dark topics before — tackling the financial crash of 2008 in “The Big Short,” the Iraq War in “Vice,” and natural disasters with “Don’t Look Up.” It’s unclear how he’ll take on the mounting threat to the planet or if Netflix will be involved.

Raucous if not reckless, Bottoms is at once earnest and obscene, well constructed in its crudity and often laugh out loud funny. It's a high school-set coming of age queer comedy which sounds like a narrow overlap but it's in the same tradition as Superbad, Anchorman, Fight Club and the Art of Self-Defense.
That might seem an incredibly specific and messy confluence of ideas, but even at my remove from adolescence that seems, still, apposite. Directed by Emma Seligman and co-written with Rachel Sennot it reunites them in something potentially more approachable than the sterling Shiva Baby. Editor Hanna Park and cinematographer Maria Rusche both return too, and while Sennott is on-screen in both she's the only one returning in front of the camera.

The comedic landscape of Hollywood has been significantly shaped by the talents and contributions of one man: John William Ferrell, more popularly known as Will Ferrell. Over the years, he has demonstrated his undeniable prowess in acting, producing, and writing, leaving an indelible mark on the entertainment industry.

John William Ferrell, born on July 16, 1967, in Irvine, California, was brought into a world of creativity and art. His mother, Betty Kay Overman, was an elementary school teacher, and his father, Roy Lee Ferrell Jr., was a talented musician, who once played with The Righteous Brothers. Both his parents hailed from Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, but moved to California in 1964. He has a mixed ancestry of English, German, and Irish.

When we talk about Christmas movies and holiday classics, so often, we're talking about movies that came out decades ago, like "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946), "Miracle on 34th Street" (1957), "A Christmas Story" (1983), or "Scrooged" (1988). Even "Home Alone" was released in 1990 and that feels downright modern compared to many of these films that have been in rotation for longer than a fair number of you reading this have been alive. The point is, it's tough to gain that coveted holiday classic status. But 20 years ago, Jon Favreau and Will Ferrell teamed up to give us the definitive modern Christmastime classic: "Elf."

A knockout performance anchors a mostly charming fish-out-of-water comedy that has stayed a seasonal favorite ever since
The first rule in the Code of Elves is to “treat every day like Christmas”, and that, in a nutshell, is Will Ferrell’s comic style. At 6ft 3in, he’s almost always the tallest actor on screen yet his instinct is to play even bigger, with an ungainly exuberance that tends to set the tone for whatever scene he’s in. He’s a Bergdorf Goodman window display. He’s the neighbor who nearly kills himself every year hanging enough lights and gaudy holiday bric-a-brac around his house to slow traffic in the subdivision. He couldn’t fade back into the scenery if he tried – and, to his immense credit, he never, ever tries.
It’s not quite right to say he was born to play Buddy, an exuberant orphan raised in Santa’s workshop in Elf,...

"Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" usually tops lists of the best Will Ferrell movies, but for many, the silly, raucous classic that is "Step Brothers" is simply unbeatable. The tale of 40-year-old man-children Brennan Huff (Ferrell) and Dale Doback (John C. Reilly) struggling to get along after their parents marry and move in together solidified its two stars as the perfect pairing. Ferrell and Reilly had worked together on "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" but it was 2008's "Step Brothers" that truly tapped into their shared talent for sheer buffoonery.
There are other movies like "Step Brothers" but none quite manage the absolute stupidity of two 40-year-old men living with their parents and acting like spoiled 14-year-old brats. With Adam McKay directing and co-writing, the film was in good hands from the outset, especially since the man behind most of the best early-2000s comedies, Judd Apatow,...

Through its first six seasons, identifying who voiced one of the many aliens, critters, or goobers on Rick and Morty was a pretty easy thing to do. That’s because, in addition to performing as the titular lead characters, co-creator Justin Roiland also embodied most of the show’s strange background players.
Following season 6, however, Roiland was fired from the series due to receiving domestic battery charges (later dropped) and multiple allegations of sexual assault. With Roiland gone, multiple actors have stepped in to fill the roles of Rick, Morty, and the whole other host of characters from the Adult Swim hit’s increasingly large constellation of galaxies, timelines, and multiverses. Even without the personnel change midway through, Rick and Morty‘s cast of voice actors was already pretty confusing beast to make sense of. So let’s try to do exactly that.

Rudolph Isley, a founding member of the Grammy-winning Isley Brothers who helped create some of the most memorable songs in American musical history, has died. His brother Ron confirmed the news to Deadline. Rudolph Isley was 84.
In a statement provided to Deadline, Ron Isley said of his brother’s passing, “There are no words to express my feelings and the love I have for my brother. Our family will miss him. But I know he’s in a better place.”
The Isley Brothers have had various lineups through the years, but Rudy was with the band from its beginnings in the late 1950s to his retirement from music in 1989, when he took up a Christian ministry. During that time, they recorded such classics as “Shout,” cowritten by Rudy, which in 1959 became their first single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. The record sold over a million copies. Will Ferrell didn’t just star in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy — he also co-wrote the script with director Adam McKay. As they were brainstorming story ideas, they did plenty of research. As it turns out, old journalists like to talk, and they have plenty of great stories to tell. Ferrell told us that he and McKay had a great time listening to old newsmen’s tales. For the last few years, Netflix seemed to have sprung a leak. Once the one-stop shop for movies and TV, the world’s most popular streamer took a beating as rival services emerged. Disney+ and Max clawed back movies for their own streamers, and it seemed no one wanted to share libraries under any circumstances.
But times have changed.
Desperate to add revenue, rival streamers have once again opened their vaults to Netflix. The result is the best library Netflix has had in several years.
It’s Not TV, It’s Not HBO, It’s Netflix
One major pivot is how Max is allowing some of its HBO crown jewels to drift to Netflix. It began with the groundbreaking “Insecure,” cited by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 Best Sitcoms of All Time. Starting today, Netflix users will also be able to binge the highly acclaimed “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.

Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" has already proven itself to be one of the best films of 2023, and certainly one of the most quotable. Whether it's funny ("Do you guys ever think about dying?"), introspective, or memeable ("my job is just beach"), there are so many fantastic lines to choose as a favorite. During an interview with BBC Radio 1, Gerwig confessed that her favorite line reading is one of the film's most unexpected laughs.
Interviewer Ali Plumb said that one of his favorite line readings was when Stereotypical Barbie looked toward the sky on her drive and sees two Astronaut Barbies floating in the sky, and declares "Yay, space!" Gerwig immediately interjected with excitement, "Yay, space! That's my favorite, that's my favorite!" If you were paying close attention to the second and third episodes of “Only Murders in the Building” Season 3, you may have noticed a few Easter eggs paying homage to its high-profile murder victim Paul Rudd.
Production designer Patrick Howe spoke with TheWrap about the fun but challenging task of decorating Ben Glenroy’s (Rudd) lavish penthouse apartment at the Arconia, as well as his stalker’s apartment in Episode 2, with objects celebrating both Glenroy’s and Rudd’s storied career in Hollywood.
“99% of the credit goes to decorator Rich Murray… He really did come up with this long laundry list of Easter egg opportunities that were attributed to Paul’s career up to this point,” Howe said. “The directives we had from the script was that he was going to move into the penthouse apartment, it was going to be sublet from Amy Schumer which would be said in dialogue.

Barbie may be everything, and Ken is just Ken, but what about the people in the Real World they meet along the way? Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, based on the popular dolls, is a hyper-stylized take on the Mattel toys that sees the titular doll journey from Barbie Land to the Real World on a quest of self-discovery.
This movie definitely looks the part, but it wouldn’t be what it is without its incredible all-star cast full of award-winning actors and familiar faces. Here’s what you need to know about the Barbie characters and the actors who play them.
Margot Robbie is Barbie
In addition to producing the movie, Margot Robbie plays a Barbie doll who has an existential crisis and is forced to go on a journey from Barbie Land to the Real World to find answers. She’s everything, but is that enough? Robbie is most...

Molly Gordon on Making Directorial Debut ‘Theater Camp’ and Reuniting With Ayo Edebiri on ‘The Bear’
This interview was conducted before SAG-AFTRA authorized a strike on July 13.
In 2019, Molly Gordon worked for three days on Ramy, the Hulu show about a man exploring his faith in New York City, and it changed her life. She was 23, in the nascent stages of a career she had been dreaming about since childhood. That year, she had roles in Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart and Gene Stupnitsky’s Good Boys, but her time on set with creator Ramy Youssef and executive producer Chris Storer served as what she describes as a “turning point” creatively.
This summer, she marked another professional milestone with the July 14 release of Theater Camp, her screenwriting and directorial debut, which she had been working on for years with longtime friends Ben Platt, Noah Galvin and Nick Lieberman. Gordon also stars in the mockumentary-style comedy about an eccentric group of artists working to save their summer camp for kids from financial ruin.
