After reports swirled last fall that Hugh Hefner‘s health was declining, the Playboy founder’s youngest son, Cooper, is assuring that his father is in good spirits.”He’s doing fine,” Cooper told E! News about his 90-year-old dad. “My dad has always made the joke that if the mansion was your house, why would you want to leave?”
Cooper, 25, continued: “I think because he has stepped back from the day to day operations of the business, people have thought that his health was not very good. The reality is he has a really bad back — that happens when...

Hollywood needs a hit
Actually, Hollywood needs a bunch of hits.
Actually, Hollywood needs a bunch of big, fat, through-the-roof hits.
And with the summer – and the year – half over, the time to come up with them is running out.
The movie business finished 2010 with the second highest domestic box office on record: $10.2 billion. But this was a misleading, oh, let’s call it a “symptom.” That ten billion and change was like the midpoint in every episode of House where the brilliant diagnostician thinks he’s figured out what’s ailing this week’s guest star, his team begins treatment, and, just as the patient seems to be getting better and the regulars are congratulating each other on the save…the patient throws a conniption fit, thrashing around on the bed and spitting up blood.
Part of that ten billion-plus came from a nearly 20% hike in average tickets prices...

Want to know the difference between the two versions of "Arthur?" Just compare their first scenes. The 1981 original introduced Dudley Moore's Arthur Bach cruising for hookers. The 2011 remake has Russell Brand's Arthur dress up as Batman and crash an authentic "Batman Forever" Batmobile into Charging Bull and make fun of its testicles. I'm not a huge fan of the original "Arthur," but as a film about a drunken, whoremongering hero, at least it took some chances. Moore's Arthur was a lecherous sleaze. Brand's Arthur is a cutesy cartoon goof.
So is his movie. Everything messy and ugly (and therefore interesting) about the old Arthur has been smoothed out in this shrewdly calculated remake. With those hints of darkness gone, Arthur becomes an overgrown boy with his toys, a lost innocent looking for the love and respect he's never gotten from his distant mother. He doesn't need a drink; he needs a hug.

My comments on the film selection and the festival's new initiatives follow below. The hot links connect the reader directly to the online catalog of Toronto International Film Festival which will be September 10-17 and will screen 273 features. Last year it screened 249. 242 are world, international or North American premieres, and 71 are first features.
First off, my thanks go to the Toronto International Film Festival for the new City To City Section's selection of Tel Aviv which is celebrating its 100th birthday this year. Ten films have just been announced and there will be a public forum for filmmakers and thinkers from Tel Aviv and Toronto.
I do more than hope that we will not see the "Ken Loach experience" of Edinburgh and Melbourne repeat itself in uglier colors reminding us that September 11, 2001 happened in Toronto as it did everywhere else in the world. “The Ken Loach experience” happened when Ken Loach...

For All Of Us (Ianto) Jonesing For Some Torchwood Action
This is a big week for Torchwood fans.
The new Torchwood comic, “Captain Jack and the Selkie,” is finally being published in the U.S. Anticipation for this comic is particularly high, since it’s co-written by Captain Jack’s alter ego, John Barrowman, himself, along with his sister Carole (and I’ve got a terrific Q&A with Carole you’ll get to see in just a few).
Ordinarily, the publication of a comic might seem like small potatoes in the world of entertainment. But Torchwood fans have been craving any and all new Torchwood material for months. It’s been almost a year since the tearjerker Season Two finale aired in the U.S., and ever since, the blogosphere has been rampant with anxious speculation about Season Three. Sci-fi fans are such a bunch of nervous nellies about...
