Briefly Terrific

The movie is simply amazing. The concept, the characterisations, the script, the screenplay, the performances, the dialogues, the comedy, rd burman's fabulous music -- everything, every aspect of this movie is simply outstanding. This movie made by Jyotin Goel is criminally underrated -- probably because it was made in the 1980s when there was hardly any publicity as is the case these days. Still the movie was a success and deserved every bit of it. The plot -- inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's classic North by Northwest, albeit with many changes to suit Indian tastes -- involves a happy-go-lucky man Ashok Saxena (Sanjay Dutt) whose life turns topsy turvy when the gang of villains (led by Amrish Puri) assume him to be a CID agent. He's also accused of murder and the police is after him -- with a Rs 10,000 reward on his head. While on the run he bumps into an aspiring model, Sonia Srivastav (Meenakshi Sheshadri, and the two fall in love. But life isn't as rosy, and his girl, not as innocent as she seems. The suspense element comes as a surprise and the climax is nailbiting. Dutt is in excellent form and this movie was a perfect follow up to Naam. Meenakshi was charmingly effective. Watching her perform one can't help but wonder how could Bollywood waste such a talented actress. The crackling chemistry between the lead pair poses yet another question. Why didn't they do some more films together? But that very reason makes Inaam Dus Hazaar an affair to remember. A movie that can be watched when one wants to lift of his/her spirits. One last word: two of RD's compositions in this film "Chand Koi Hoga Tumsa Kahaan" and "Jaane Bhi Do Yaar" are real gems. Again criminally underrated. Overall a good masala entertainer and certainly one of Sanjay Dutt's best movies.

A great suspense thriller

This was an excellent movie. I agree with the comments of the other members that it was an underestimated movie as publicity options were not enough in 80s. One more reason why the movies in late 80s used to receive less collection at the box office was frequent VIDEO PIRACY. After all it was a great movie. Despite the chemistry of SANJAY and meenakshi, I also liked the tuning of RAZA MURAD and SANJAY. The suspense of the movie is excellent. Especially the climax becomes nail-chewing when the mystery unfolds. What I can say it is a complete entertainer, a clean. A must watch for the people who like thrillers and mystery movies.

A Great Movie

In terms of sheer entertainment value, Jyotin Goel's Inaam Dus Hazaar (1987) is a perfect 10. It's probably the most entertaining Hindi film ever made, containing a bit of everything --- thrills, comedy, romance, drama and suspense. No doubt the movie is inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest but then what matters is the fact that it is a cleverly made film, and it did good business when it's released. The plot is about mistaken identity wherein the villains (led by Amrish Puri) assume the hero (Sanjay Dutt) to be a undercover police officer and the events that follow. There are many scenes in the movie which are unforgettable and the dialogues are also first rate. The highlight of the movie is the sizzling chemistry between Dutt and the leading lady (Meenakshi Sheshadri). They made a great pair for sure. Not to forget a memorable musical score by the legendary RD Burman (one of his scores that never got its due). Both Sanjay Dutt and Meenakshi Seshadri are highly underrated and unfortunately, the only movie they starred together, is also very underrated, even though it was a box office winner. Nonetheless this movie is a must watch for its sheer entertainment value. Trust me, it is a great cinematic experience. I first watched it in 1994 and it has stayed with me since. I've lost count of the number of times I've watched it thereafter. Guess it is one of those movies which you can watch repeated and enjoy again and again. Perhaps, like vintage stuff that gets better with age.
