Well, not a great movie. Not even a good one. It could possibly be described as decent.

Then again, not my type of movie whatsoever, so I could be quite biased. I'm also not a young teen/child/whatever age group that Disney aims at these days.

Disney movies are usually silly movies that you can sit back and enjoy, without straining your brain at all. No brain-strain here, but also no enjoyability. I may have smiled once during the movie, but, other than that, no high points. No laughing, no grinning.. it just really didn't entertain me at all. Weak jokes, even weaker plot, but hey - One good thing can be said about it. It teaches children that sexism is wrong, or at least (I believe) tries to. I'm not sure how many children would get that out of the movie, but it was definitely there.

Kids'll probably enjoy it, from what I've heard, and it has a good message in there for 'em, too, so no harm is done by this movie. Being a 'decent' movie, it got a 5/10, somewhere in the middle, but the 'good message' aspect of it boosted it up to 6/10.

This movie was not as good as some Disney Channel Original Movies over the past year, but it is better than The Even Steven's Movie and The Scream Team. Orlando Brown, Taylor Ball, and Reilly McClendon were good actors. I just thought it was a little strange how everyone made fun of him because he cooked. I mean come on. He was just cooking. No big deal. Overall B- Here's How it compares to other Disney Cahnnel original Movies over the ppast year.

A Good Wholesome Watch
quinna-2395721 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is a great family flick to watch with the kids. It has good lessons about parents living their unlived life goals through their children. The father wants his son to play baseball and win the championships for the team, which he wishes he could do but can't. The mother is played well as she balances out the father's wishes with believing that her son should do what he likes. It culminates with the father's understanding that his son should be able to make his own choices. Eddie's friend DB is the worst thing about this movie. I understand not wanting your friend to leave you hanging at baseball, but he was overly antagonistic and needed a good punch in the teeth from Eddie. Also, where did all the food that Eddie got everywhere at night go? Did he clean it? Did his mom clean it? Who knows. That's the biggest plot hole in this movie. I am also very glad he did not win the cooking competition but instead won back his friendships and the respect of the people around him. Provides a good lesson that just because you love something does not mean you will be the best, but that is ok as long as you are true to yourself.

Great job by a fresh actor...
joeldunaway3 April 2004
Taylor Ball does a great job in this movie. Unlike some other critics that have posted here, I do not mind the contrived somewhat forced plot. Most Disney vehicles are forced and contrived, and that is part of the childlike magic that is the wonder of Disney. I, for one, loved the movie and will buy it for my Disney collection.

Ball's sitcom is good stuff as well. I look forward to seeing more of this young man in the future. Not since Brandon de Wilde (Born 1942-Died 1972) has there been a young male actor that flows well on the screen with an ease that makes it seem as if he is not having to work at it. I hope Disney uses him more.

Taylor Ball is awesome
danomychowski27 November 2008
Honestly, I never cared for the movies produced by the modern Disney channel (I think they're calling it Zoog? Whatever that means.). In fact, I haven't really liked most of the more recent theatrical films from the Disney company. They seem to have gone way downhill since Walt died, though there have been signs that they are returning to form lately. Movies like Sky High, Pirates, and even The Game Plan was a minor improvement over the countless number of sub-par attempts they have been making since the late 80's. And now we have this. Yet another family sports comedy featuring a kid as the lead, just another sandlot wannabe. Or is it? Yes, the plot is cliché and tired, and yes, the film itself is endlessly predictable--especially how it ends. But somehow it manages to pull itself away from what seemed like inevitable mediocrity. The film itself had a sort of charm to it that really added to the viewer's enjoyment of what would be an otherwise pointless mess of cliché. That and Taylor Ball, best known for playing the part of Brian on the sitcom Still Standing. He times his lines just well enough that he actually makes some rather silly lines of dialog work. He manages to make a character out of one of the most tired cliché vehicles in the book. and for that, I praise him. Taylor Ball saved this movie from being a total failure. It is a wonder why he doesn't get more work.

Funny and heartwarming film
BrandtSponseller13 January 2005
Hank Ogden (Mark L. Taylor) is a coach for a junior-high level community baseball team, the Groundhogs. Unfortunately, the team is much closer to the Bad News Bears than the New York Yankees. Hank's son Eddie (Taylor Ball) is one of the few quality players, and Hank thinks he has a shot of making it to the major leagues. Although Eddie likes baseball, he discovers that his true passion is for cooking. Eddie's Million Dollar Cook-Off is the comic tale of conflicting desires and expectations between Eddie and his friends, family and teammates over his aspirations.

Although some viewers may have difficulty looking past the exaggerated social beliefs and interactions fueling a prominent "moral of the story", this is a great, funny film that succeeds because of the style, subtlety and comic sense of director Paul Hoen, aided by excellent performances. I don't think I've ever seen food fights filmed this artfully before. Yes, food fights are clichéd, and much of the script, on its own, would be somewhat clichéd and banal, but Hoen and the cast manage to make the film feel fresh and original. I almost felt as though I had never seen a film centered around food before--your eyes are opened to the many metaphorical ways that such a commonplace thing is woven through our lives.

Of course, this film isn't just about food, though. Eddie's Million Dollar Cook-Off is intended to help shatter gender stereotypes--especially the way we try to graft them on to our children. The message is to follow your dreams, and be what you want to be, whether it's what others have planned for you, or expect of you, or not. At the same time, there's a message about supporting others in following their dreams. These are valuable messages for people of any age, not just kids, and the exaggerated and old-fashioned-seeming pigeonholing shown by the characters in the film are only cartoonish to emphasize the point.

This might all sound dreadfully serious and preachy, but the film doesn't tend to play that way. It plays as lighthearted, humorous and heartwarming. Just be careful that your kids don't have easy access to blenders and ovens after they watch the film, or you'll have some serious cleaning to do.

A 9 out of 10 from me.

Overall good movie
raspberry131328 September 2003
Eddies Million Dollar Cook-off was a good movie, granted i am older than most of the people that were cast in this movie. I feel that everyone could relate to this movie, like when eddies friends made fun of him for cooking, anyones friends could do that. I think that EMDCO was better than half the disney movies that are on . It shows that girls and guys can do the samething, that guys can cook and girls can play the same sport as guys.It has a good cast good writing and is something that everone should be able to relatable to at one point in their life.

Good movie for the whole family
Go_Skins10 March 2005
I sat down the other night to watch this with my kids because they wanted to watch it. It's a pretty good movie with some young stars. The movie tells about Eddie who like most teens, grows up with some pretty close friends. He then finds out he has a gift. The gift of cooking! The movie portrays people that cook are either different or a girl. We all know that's not true! Eddie has a hard time trying to figure out this gift because he is stuck between baseball, which his dad forces him to play because he's the coach, and his "passion" for cooking! I liked seeing Bobby Flay in this movie. Can't think of anyone else that would be good for that part! I also like the other girl who is Eddie's "rival" in the kitchen.

great family movie
loveshiaandtaylor19 July 2003
this movie is about a boy who has a natural talent for baseball, but wants to be a cook. I love this movie! It is one of the best disney channel movies ever! Not 2 mention Taylor is so hott! *sighs* sorry emdco is the ultimate baseball movie! I, myself someday want to be a cook or own a catering service where I can cook, so this movie taught me a lot of cooking info. this movie is so realistic, the dreamer, the jealous friend and the friend that will stick with you through good times and bad. I recommend this movie for anyone who has a dream that no one beleives in! Or for anyone who just wants 2 see a good movie, i give it 4 out of 4 stars

Eddie was really Coming Out.
mcmahon203-00131 January 2004
A typical upbeat kids movie but with a notable different message. The REAL story is that our hero, 14 year old Eddie comes out. The jock goes through all of the angst, guilt, rejection and fear that any 14 year old boy would have upon realizing he was "different." However, Disney, in their infinite wisdom, super sanitizes the story so that Eddie comes out as a CHEF instead of GAY. I wont criticize it too much because even this would have been a big stretch for Hollywood five years ago. Cute and entertaining if you don't have much to do. CMC, Sherman Oaks, CA

Very Good
everwood14_418 July 2003
This was a really good movie. The main character Eddie played by Taylor Ball did a really good job. Eddies friend DB got mad at Eddie because he would rather cook then play baseball. This is an all around good family movie.

Good movie

Very good movie. It is a good movie involving what many teenagers go through today: making the right decisions. It also shows how Eddie was afraid to tell his father the truth, for fear of being ridiculed. This movie hits home with what many teenagers go through today. I would recommend this movie.

A bit of trivia about the music
jetfrank20 January 2007
Didn't really watch the movie but while my kids were watching and I was reading the paper I heard them using the song "Soul Food" which is from Leon Russell's 1967 album, Asylum Choir that he did with a guy named Marc Benno. For those who never heard of Leon, check him out - he should be in the Rock and Roll hall of Fame for his contributions during the early years with such folks as the Beach Boys, Joe Cocker and as a solo artist. Weird.....I am a huge Leon fan and the last place I would have expected to find his songs - let alone this one is a Disney movie. Great choice Mr. Director...... well i see I need ten lines of text so here goes.. this is the tenth line!!!!!!

Uhhh, not great
brie41624 July 2003
Maybe I'm just in the wrong age bracket to really get into this film. But for the most part I found it dull and boring. I found myself flipping the channel quite often to see what else was on. That said, I have watched and enjoyed several other recent Disney Channel Original Movies, so it's not just I'm anti-Disney.

Taylor Ball did a good job as the lead and Orlando Brown did a good job with his supporting part. The other boy (whose name I don't know) who played his friend was pretty good as well. But some of the other acting left a lot be desired. I particularly thought the girl who played Bridget was not a great actress.

The plot was contrived. I couldn't understand why the whole school would get so worked up about him liking cooking. They might make fun of him, but if he really was the star baseball player I doubt they would have gotten angry with him like that. And I found myself not caring at the end what would happen, even though I knew they would eventually win the baseball game.

And like others have said, the baseball games were quite unrealistic.

Not a bad movie, just not great. It sends a good message to kids about pursuing your dreams and doing what you like to do, but the message itself comes across pretty heavy handed.

A Great Movie From Disney!
questionz_mark8 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I say this is a most exceptional movie showing how hard it is to do something you love to do when your parents don't approve. Most teens will face situations where their parents don't approve of their dreams but they need to support them anyway since it's their life not the parents. Also the movie represents how just because you're a guy it doesn't mean you can't enjoy things normally girls would stereotypically do like cook. Or if you're a girl it does not mean you can't play sports either a.k.a Hannah and her mother. The movie is all about not letting anyone or anything stopping you from doing something you love. Whether it's the ridicule or being shunned. Although most importantly people learn that you will not agree with what your friends do (that's positive not NEGATIVE!) or your family but if they like it you support it if you love them. The actors...for the most part really capture the emotion of embarrassment and shame, but also still keep it in a comedic tone. Music matched the movie, a family feel like tone just like all usual Disney work.

Wonderful Plot. Jack Jason,Rick Bitzelberger and Daniel Berendsen make writing it look easy.
paelentologist26 June 2004
The Groundhogs are the lamest team in the league. But when their best player, Eddie Odgen (Taylor Ball), makes a comeback in tip-top shape, they show the other teams that they can win. But Eddie has another love that no one else knows of, cooking! When he signs up for Home Economics instead of Computer Sciences, his teacher (Nancy Lenehan) asks whether anyone wants to sign up for a million dollar cook-ff to enter the culinary school of their dreams ...bla bla bla. Only Bridget Simons (Kylie Leydon)-the cooking sensation-gets a form. When everyone's gone, he snags one. He unbelievably enters the finals, and it's all out EDDIE THE BASEBALL MASTERO LOVES TO COOK. To make up for the humiliation, there's good news, his team goes to the finals! But the cook-off and the baseball game are on the same day at the same time. Which will Eddie choose?

Also starring:

Orlando Brown as Frankie and Reiley McClendon as D.B. - his 2 best friends (and players on the team),;

John Barker as Andy Ogden and Susan Brady as Sarah Ogden - his parents,;

Nick Miller as Alex Ogden and Mark Taylor as Hank Ogden - his brothers,;

Rose McIver as Hannah - another player on the team with problems of her own and;

Daniel Costello as Oliver and Bobby Flay as Bobby - other players on the team.

BASEBALL AND COOKING DON'T ALWAYS GO TOGETHER AND EDDIE'S STUCK IN THE MIDDLE.

Cute and necessary...
RosanaBotafogo15 January 2023
Eddie Ogden is his country's pride and joy as well as the Groundhogs team's only asset as baseball talent. Then Eddie discovers a taste and talent for cuisine. Although his brothers Andy and Alex, and Pa as well as classmates enjoy his dishes from him, they only mock cooking, so he arranges and 'accidental' registration for him and two friends in Home Economics. Only Eddie -secretly again- and nerdy shrew Bridget Simons enter a national cooking competition for school-kids. Ma finds out and to his surprise her proves supportive, as well as the teacher, who once won the competition herself.

These paradigm-shattering films are more satisfying than most of the silly children's nonsense produced by Disney in the 2000s, a very interesting approach, full of prejudices and macho patriarchal traditions, but with a very cute and cute message about following your gifts, and freedom of choices, and especially breaking the view that sports are for girls and cooking for girls... I exaggerate the food fights, unnecessary...

For some reason I liked it...
limited2ev19 July 2003
This movie has many flaws and a pretty crappy plot line, but for some reason I liked it. It really bothered me that they showed the identical baseball play 4 times... and that this "baseball prodigy", Eddie, hadn't figured out yet to put his whole foot against the side of first base (maybe I'm just aniel because I play 1st base...). Anyway, besides that, for some reason you like this Eddie dude, even though he has the strangest fetish for cooking. I guess I liked all the characters really... but the plot line and realisticness (is that a word?) was really bad. I would recommend to watch it, its good for a few laughs, especially where he's making his "original recipe", the purple goo bar-b-q sauce. YUM.

Well....
punk_rocker_0726 July 2003
First things first, I am so NOT one for Disney Channel Original Movies, I find them extremely annoying and most of them feature fantasy creatures or non-realstic scenarios. BUT, on Friday July 18th I sat and watched Eddie's Million Dollar Cook-Off and I loved it, that's right, I loved an original movie and I'm not afraid to admit it! I mean Taylor Ball is a great actor (not to mention good looking), that sounds so cliche, but have you seen the other movies, I know you don't think those kids are good actors, but Taylor is totally believable and does his job with ease. Orlando Brown, ok he annoys me but I'm warming up to him, I mean he wasn't always being silly like the line "Yeah well I don't think you making Eddie chose between having friends and cooking is helping either D.B." that was really well acted and I think he could have a future in other things, not just disney channel shows and movies. Reiley McClendon, I love Reiley, this kid is so adorable, and he's really funny too. And Rose McIver (Hannah) I had no idea she was a Kiwi, you couldn't even tell she's terrific at an American accent, she's definately going to go far. OK, only three things bugged me about this movie 1. NO ONE, would make fun of a boy for cooking! The boys are better at Home Ec. then us and they like it too, no one makes fun of them. 2. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A FOOD FIGHT!!!! I have never been in or seen a real food fight, they are nonexistant, you would be in SO much trouble, no one I repeat no one! really has school food fights! 3. The girl who plays Bridgette SUCKS at an American accent, alright she can not do it, I don't know why they hired her, she wasn't fooling me for a second. My favorite scene is when Eddie goes over to talk to Bridgette and D.B. comes over and is like "What are you doing." and Bridgette goes "We're talking about the cook-off." and Eddie goes "No we're not." and Bridgette's all "Yes we are." and Eddie says "She's crazy." then D.B. says "Is something going on between you two." and Eddie's all "With me and Bridgette? Get real!" I LOVE that part it's so hilarious, and later on when Eddie goes "They're carrots, whatever you do to them they're going to taste like carrots." and the another funny thing is at the end when Eddie goes "I GOT LEMON!!" it's so lame, like out of context, it's freakin hilarious. So if you, like me, lost faith in the Disney Channel a long time ago, be not afraid, watch this movie, it's fun, not too silly, and has an actual message sorta. And if all else fails, it will make you laugh.
